Cops crack down on massage parlour, four women held
TNN, Jun 21, 2010, 02.41am IST

CHENNAI: The police on Saturday claimed to have busted a sex racket following a raid on a massage parlour in Teynampet and arrested four persons. Four women — two from Manipur and two from Nepal — were rescued and sent to the government home in Mylapore.

Acting on a tip-off, police teams sent a decoy to the 'Jai Rali Natural Health Spa' in Teynampet. After confirming that the reported irregularities were indeed happening, the decoy informed the police teams waiting outside the spa.

The latter barged into the parlour and arrested Sunil, 32, of Kerala, Murali Kumar, 35, of Saidapet, Pugazhenthi, 38, of Jafferkhanpet and Suresh, 41, of Virugambakkam. Mani, who owns the outlet, is absconding.

Two Manipuri girls and two Nepali girls, who were ostensibly employees of the massage parlour but were allegedly indulging in sex work, were rescued and sent to a government home in Mylapore. The police said that Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 was charged for different types of services at the parlour.

The Teynampet police registered a case under Sections 3 (1), 4 (1) (a) and 7 (1) of the Immoral Trafficking Prohibition (ITP) Act.

IndiGo flight suffers tyre burst while landing in Srinagar
PTI, Jun 21, 2010, 04.45pm IST

SRINAGAR: Over 160 people onboard an IndiGo flight from Delhi had a narrow escape today when one of the tyres of the aircraft burst while landing at the airport here.

"The tyre of the flight coming from Delhi burst during landing at around 1:10 AM," Airport Director Mohammad Israr said.

All 158 passengers and six crew members are safe, the airline said.

Israr said the tyre had been replaced and the IndiGo flight 6E-551 was ready for take off.

The Airbus A-320 was operating on the Bangalore- Delhi-Srinagar- Jammu sector and the incident happened soon after it landed at Srinagar airport, airport sources said here.

Airline spokesperson said that a tyre was found damaged during routine inspection by aircraft engineers and had to be changed.

"The IndiGo team had carried out necessary inspection, and changed the tyre to ensure we meet all safety standards. Owing to this development, there has been a delay in the flight take-off from Srinagar," the spokesperson said.

The incidents adds to a string of close calls for various flights. On June 16, an Air India plane from Mumbai to Delhi with 140 passengers and six crew members had a close shave when it suffered a bird hit while landing at the city airport here, a day after two tyres of the same aircraft were found deflated on landing at Delhi.

Earlier this month, an Air India Express Dubai-Pune flight with 112 passengers on board, dropped several thousand feet over Muscat air space after hitting an air pocket, giving anxious moments to those on board.

About a week later, a mid-air collision was averted by pilots as a Jet Airways and an Air India plane came 'dangerously close' on the same flight path over Tamil Nadu.

Air India flight IC 671 and Jet Airways flight 9W 4758, carrying nearly 250 passengers and crew, came close to colliding with each other at a height of 17,000 feet near Trichchirapalli air space, triggering an Air Traffic Collision Avoidance siren in both the planes.

On June 3, a possible disaster was averted at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport when a flight was cleared for landing while another plane was waiting for take-off on the same runway.

A Chennai-bound Spicejet flight with 201 passengers was cleared for take-off shortly after 1.30 a.m. but the flight commander detected some technical problem and informed the air traffic control.

At the same time, the ATC had already cleared for landing a Kingfisher Airlines flight arriving from New Delhi. The Kingfisher flight too had some 200 passengers on board.

On May 22, an Air India Express aircraft had overshot the runway at Mangalore airport and crashed into a ravine killing 158 passengers, the worst air disaster in a decade.

Court asks convict to pay Rs 1 lakh to rape victim
PTI, Jun 24, 2010, 08.00pm IST

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court has directed a man to a pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to an MCD school teacher after holding him guilty of raping her.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau sentenced Azaz Ahmed, a cab driver, to the jail term that he had already served during his incarceration in judicial custody.

The court's order came after Ahmed pleaded guilty of the charges levelled by the victim who said the convict, who was already married, raped her a number of times between January and September 2007 after promising to marry her.

The victim had also alleged she was forced to abort on August 14, 2007 by the convict as she conceived due to forced relationship.

During the trial, the convict, who used to pick and drop children in a MCD school, admitted his guilt as the victim recorded her statement before the court detailing the incidents, leading to registration of a criminal case against the convict with Jahangirpuri police station here.

"After the accused has expressed his desire to plead guilty, the victim orally told the court that she has forgiven the accused and does not wish to pursue the present case further.

"She has told the court that she and her family are in a state of destitution since after this incident when her parents came to know about her relationship with the accused they went into a state of depression," the court noted.

Besides ordering the convict to pay up, the court directed the Delhi police officer, who investigated the case, to put the family of the victim, who worked in the MCD school as teacher on contractual basis, under the care of an NGO working in the area to provide necessary assistance by way of counselling and rehabilitation of her and her family members.

The victim had told the court that her family members, including mother, brother and sister, were passing through depression following the incident with her.

Marriage with stepmom is rape: Deoband
TNN, Jun 25, 2010, 03.30am IST

LUCKNOW: With an eight-year older step-mother, Husna Beghum, as his love interest, things had never been smooth for Ronak Ali, 25, an unskilled labourer. Eldest among five, Ronak stunned his family and the little hamlet of Gunnor in Baghpat last Tuesday when he surfaced with Beghum — both had been missing since June 13 — by his side, this time, as his one-day-old bride.

Hounded by family, friends and relatives, the couple has gone into hiding again after the Islamic seminary of Darul Uloom, Deoband, has denounced the union as null and void. The terse edict delivered by the fatwa department on Wednesday, maintains that relationship with a mother, even if she is a step-mother, is sacrosanct. Therefore, the union will be deemed to be rape and the violators of the sharia will evoke the stringent punishment as per the tenets of Islam.

Confirming the fatwa, deputy vice-chancellor of the seminary, Maulana Abdul Khalique Madrasi said: "The episode was extremely unfortunate and shows perversion of the worst order. Such a 'nikah' can never be permissible under the sharia."

Beggar who gave alms to the poor
Radha Sharma, TNN, Jun 27, 2010, 12.36am IST

AHMEDABAD: A beggar on Saturday proved that charity only needs a big heart rather than deep pockets. Khimjibhai Prajapati, 64 and a beggar in Mehsana for a decade, donated clothes to 11 poor hearing and speech-impaired girls at the Shrimati Kesarbai Kilachand School for the Deaf.

Rich philanthropists have been a more common sight but it was the first time ever that a beggar had walked into the school to share his savings. It was an unusual sight. An unkempt Khimjibhai in tattered, unwashed clothes, limped through the school gates on crutches and placed the brand new clothes in the hands of 11 eager girls. He had used his savings of Rs 3,000 to buy the clothes.

Khimjibhai begs outside the Simandhar Swami Jain Temple in Mehsana and outside the Hanuman Temple. He lives nearby and asks the devotees for alms.

So why did he give alms to the unfortunate children at the school? Khimjibhai said, "I just need two meals a day and some money to send back to my ailing wife in Rajkot to cure her ulcers and lung infection. Apart from this, whatever I earn I use to buy food for poor, hungry people. Since a long time I wished to do something for girls and I am happy to donate for them".

Khimjibhai used to run a tea stall in Rajkot but escalating prices and shrinking profit margins wreaked huge losses and left him on the streets.

His faith in God brought him to Mehsana where he took shelter outside the Jain temple. "Whether rich or poor, one should always try to help the needy," he says. Khimjibhai helped an orphanned girl marry some time ago.

Bharat Shah, a trustee of the institution that runs the school, said, "I have never seen such philanthropy in the 35 years of career. He just goes on to prove that the true donor is he who has one roti and shares half with the hungry."

One of those who received clothes was Swati Bhagwandas, an orphan who has been at the residential school for years. The 18-year old's eyes shone with happiness.

Attempt-to-rape case against 2 Christian centre councillors
TNN, Jun 28, 2010, 02.29am IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Police in Kerala have registered cases of attempted rape and sexual abuse against two councillors of a rehabilitation centre allegedly associated with a Christian Ashram in Palakkad district. The case follows a complaint filed by five girls who managed to flee from the centre unable to bear the constant abuse heaped on them by the Brothers.

"We have registered four cases of sexual abuse and one case of attempted rape against Patrick and Joshi, who were councillors at the Raksha Villa centre," Agali Sub Inspector of police P M Gopakumar said. The centre, police sources said, was associated with an Ashram run by missionaries in Agali. The accused are yet to be traced, he added. Police, however, have not booked any case against the managing trustee of the centre, Rexi.

The five harassed girls, who hail from Ernakulam district, had run away from the centre, which basically functions as a counselling centre, and landed at the Olavakkode railway station in Palakkad where they were discovered by the Railway Police personnel. They were then taken to the Agali police station where their statements were recorded.

They told the police that they escaped from the centre with the help of a local panchayat committee member at 2 am on June 26 and managed to reach Coimbatore. As they did not have the money to pay for auto, the girls gave their gold ring. From there they reached Palakkad but were stranded at the railway station as they did not have the money for their tickets to Ernakulam.

Taslimuddin all set to join JD(U)
Bhuvaneshwar Prasad, TNN, Jun 28, 2010, 02.27am IST

KISHANGANJ: After about a year in political wilderness, former RJD leader and Union minister Taslimuddin is all set to join JD(U) on July 4.

He was pushed to the periphery of politics after he severed ties with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar later invited him to join JD(U). On Sunday, Taslimuddin confirmed he was joining his once-rival party, JD(U). Speaking to TOI, he said that he supported the CM's efforts to develop the state and foster a new political culture. "My formal induction was delayed due to unavoidable circumstances.

Several political parties, including the Congress, had approached me. But I chose the JD(U)," he said.
Taking potshots at the Congress, Taslimuddin said, the party is the "fountainhead of corruption and brainchild behind all communal carnages across the country". Congress has not only deviated from its old moorings but is a party of sycophants and self-seekers now, he said.

After snapping ties with RJD, Taslimuddin floated a political outfit, Seemanchal Vikas Morcha (SVM). Asked if he would contest the assembly polls, Taslimuddin said, "Why not? If the party asks me to fight polls, I will."

World Tamil meet comes out as a DMK show of strength
PTI, Jun 27, 2010, 09.08pm IST

COIMBATORE: Convened to showcase the history of one of the world's oldest languages, the Classical Tamil Conference is seemed to have ended up being yet another show of strength by ruling DMK ahead of next year's assembly polls.

Political commentators and Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu feel the five-day conference, curtains on which came down on Sunday, was primarily the DMK's "family show" and saw only the praise of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi who had left no stone unturned to make this meet a reality.

The conference, which was inaugurated by President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday, also clearly demonstrated the organising skills of two members of the DMK's first family --Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and party MP Kanimozhi.

While Stalin shuttled between Chennai and this industrial city to oversee the arrangements for the successful conduct of the conference, Karunanidhi's poet-daughter Kanimozhi made sure that Tamil scholars from across the globe attend the meet and present papers on various subjects.

Veteran journalist and political commentator Cho Ramasamy says the purpose of the conference was only to "praise and praise" Karunanidhi.

The venue and timing of the conference, just a year before the state goes to polls, is also significant as the DMK is trying to make 'inroads' into the bastion of archrival AIADMK in east Tamil Nadu. The Opposition party had performed well in this region in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

Many family members of Karunanidhi actively participated in the conference. While his grand daughter and daughter of Union Minister M K Alagiri, Kayalvizhi Venkatesh showed her poetic skills; another granddaughter Ezhilarasi enthralled the audience by her Veena recital.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa had on Saturday said that the conference had only "sung the praise of Karunanidhi" and will not achieve anything tangible.

At least 20 scholars had presented research papers on Karunanidhi and his works. Only a few papers were presented on the Tamil language, the theme of the conference.

A Tamil scholar himself, Karunanidhi has never missed an opportunity to highlight his language skills or express strong pro-Tamil feelings.

He was seen criss-crossing the 20 venues, where poet meets, seminars and symposiums on Tamil had been organised. Speakers after speakers heaped praise on him for organising the conference.

K Sivathambi, a Tamil scholar from Sri Lanka, convenor of the academic sessions, went to the extent of describing Karunanidhi as "World Tamils leader" and requested him to take steps for development of Tamils the world over and mitigate their sufferings.

Married woman raped at knife point
TNN, Jun 28, 2010, 05.43am IST

NAGPUR: A job aspirant who had come to the city in search of an employment was allegedly raped by two unidentified men at knife point.

The married woman was apparently raped on Thursday night at a private lodge in Sitabuldi. Police said that the 25-year-old victim, who hails from Jharkand, had come to the city for a job interview.

"She reached Nagpur railway station on Thursday morning. Since there was some time she went to see the movie 'Rajneeti'. After the movie, she asked an auto driver to take her to a lodge," said a police official.

"The accused auto driver and his friend then took her to a lodge and booked a room for her. At night, the two forcibly entered her room and threatened her with a knife before raping the woman," said a cop.

'Thief' nabbed on high court premises
TNN, Jun 26, 2010, 06.38am IST

NAGPUR: A youth has been handed over to Sadar police after his actions raised suspicion of theft from the premises of the high court premises on Friday afternoon. Sandeep Masram, 26, had been engaged unofficially as a sweeper and cleaner at the court premises for some time.

He was trapped by an alert police personnel on guard duty in the sensitive high court premises. Sources in the Sadar police station said that Masram was allegedly involved in sneaking out scrap documents from the court and disposing them off for monetary gains.

Police said that Masram regularly slipped out with scrap papers, which comprised mostly of discarded records or outdated documents. Senior inspector Sanjay Pande of Sadar police station said that Masram was spotted hurling down a sack of scrap papers from the first floor.

The policeman on guard duty challenged Masram as he was trying to take out the scrap papers. Sadar police were informed after Masram failed to furnish any authority for his actions. A case of theft has been registered against Masram.

TNN, Jun 27, 2010, 05.23am IST

NAGPUR: A 26-year-old man brutally murdered his mother at his residence at Shitalwadi, Ramtek, on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Rama Pardhi (65).

The accused, Ishwar Pardhi, has been arrested by Ramtek cops. Police said Ishwar used to pick up a quarrel with his mother regularly. Hardcore criminal from Chanda nabbed
TNN, Jun 27, 2010, 05.25am IST

NAGPUR: Crime branch sleuths succeeded in netting a notorious criminal who was earlier operating from Chandrapur. Police said that the recently-nabbed Pravin Akkewar has several offences of burglaries registered against him. Akkewar was trapped by the crime branch while he was camping at Wanadongri, which is on the outskirts of the city.

Police said that Akkewar's interrogation made it necessary for them to ensure that Pravin Kanole, who is lodged in central jail, is brought back to the crime branch through a production warrant. Akkewar turned out to be the main accomplice of Raja who was brutally murdered by Kanole and his accomplices in 2008. Though the case was being investigated by the Kalmeshwar police, the crime branch cracked it after two persons, including Kanole was arrested.

Crime branch sources said that Akkewar had helped a gang based in Andhra Pradesh to dispose of stolen gold worth Rs 22 lakh.

Following recent arrests, two offences of burglaries at Sonegaon have been detected. They had taken place in 2007. Substantial gold and other valuables were recovered from the miscreants after they confessed to their involvement in the crime.

A neighbour, who was passing by the Pardhi household, was the first to spot the incident and he immediately raised an alarm and informed the police. Police said that the accused was found near the deceased and confessed to killing his mother. Rama hailed from Durg in Chhattisgarh.

For the past one year, she stayed at Shitalwadi, Ramtek. She eked out a living by selling vegetables. Two months ago, Ishwar started staying with her. The accused was an alcoholic and unemployed.

Nightmare for tourists as tigress enters lodge
Monotosh Chakraborty, TNN, Jun 28, 2010, 04.01am IST

GOSABA (SOUTH 24-PARGANAS): They had gone there for a taste of the Sunderbans: mangrove jungles, surging tides and maybe, a whiff of wildlife. When they returned on Sunday, they had lived through a nightmare, their picture postcard holiday marred by a close encounter with the Bengal tiger — right inside the Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge.

Four tourists were at the lodge, a popular haunt of visitors, when a full-grown tigress, reportedly being chased by two tigers in heat, jumped over the boundary fence of the forest department complex twice in the space of 24 hours.

The animal was finally tranquillised on Sunday morning, but not before it had run amok inside the compound, its roars sending the tourists and the handful of forest staffers running for cover. Apart from the lodge, the complex houses a forest office and quarters.

As the tourists stayed trapped, fear of the tigress kept boats away from the Sajnekhali jetty on Saturday. The quartet was sent back on Sunday on a boat that had come with drinking water.

The lodge is currently being renovated and a section of forest officials felt the construction work triggered the breach. According to them, a pile of rubble had been placed just outside the boundary fence. The 9 ft-high barrier is enough to keep tigers out. But the rubble lowered this critical hei-ght, with the tiger climbing atop the rubble heap, before jumping into the compound.

Sunderban Tiger Reser-ve deputy field director Ri-cha Dwibedi said: "It seems to have climbed atop the rubble and leaped inside."

But West Bengal Forest Development Corporation MD PBN Rao claimed he did not know how the breach took place. "I have no information if rubble was kept outside the fence. I'll have to ask my manager at the spot for details."

Wedding marred, Behala family swallows pills
Monotosh Chakraborty, TNN, Jun 23, 2010, 05.18am IST

KOLKATA: An elderly couple and their daughter from Behala tried to commit suicide after a local youth, who had lent some money to the family, reportedly threw a spanner in the girl's wedding plans.

Prabhat Das and his wife Tanushree had been preparing for their daughter Shampa's (name changed) wedding next month. The invitation cards were ready and the caterer had been contacted. But everything changed last week after the groom's family called up to say that they had decided to back out.

And on Tuesday morning, the family was rescued from a shabby hotel room at Ajoynagar on the southern fringes of the city and taken to Peerless Hospital. All three had consumed sleeping pills and were unconscious.

Das was an employee of Metal Box who earned his living as a private tutor ever since the company shut down. He had reportedly borrowed some money from a local youth called Debraj.

Neighbours and the police pieced together a sad account of woes which might have led them to take the extreme step. Twenty-seven-year-old Shampa's marriage had to be called off last week after Debraj apparently tipped off the groom's family about his relationship with Shampa, said police. "Debraj also demanded the money that he had lent Das and insulted him publicly a few days ago," said a police officer.

Das was apparently being hounded by Debraj for quite some time. According to neighbours, the youth had threatened the family with dire consequences if she was married off elsewhere. Even on Monday evening, he had come to the Das's Kabiguru Sarani home along with a friend. But the family had left the house by then.

"He returned on Tuesday and made a ruckus. The youth left after having realized that the family had not come back," said a police officer.

According to sources, the family had left their home on Monday itself. On the same day, they checked into the hotel at Ajoynagar. Those at the reception had no inkling of their motive. They mentioned 'daughter's exam' as the purpose of their visit in the register. They walked into their room and never opened the door till hotel authorities broke it open on Wednesday morning after the family did not answer their calls.

Empty sleeping pill cases and cold drink bottles were found scattered on the floor. A note book was lying on a side table in which Das has apparently scribbled why he was forced to take the extreme step. Even though the police are yet to go through it, they believe that humiliation and embarrassment resulting from the broken marriage had driven them to a corner.

It was the neighbours who told the police about Debraj and the cops detained him for questioning along with a friend. He was let off with a warning. None had any idea that the insult and the humiliation heaped on them had already made the Das family crumble.

"Shampa was doing her MA in psychology and also worked as a counsellor," said a neighbour.

A pall of gloom descended on the locality as neighbours threw a ring around the house. There was a silver lining for the hapless family, though. Even as they struggled for their lives, news reached the neighbourhood that Shampa's prospective groom, who had earlier backed out, has agreed to the marriage.
