Will US fast food workers fight for $15 backfire?

The protests have spread to 200 cities
Apr 15, 2015, 2:48 pm EDT | By William White, InvestorPlace Writer

The fight for $15 an hour minimum wage is in full force today.

Protesters in several cities in the U.S. and around the world are taking part in the fight for $15. Many of these protesters work for fast-food companies, such as McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), Burger King Worldwide Inc (NYSE:BKW) and Wendys Co (NASDAQ:WEN), and are arguing that they need more money for a living wage, reports Time.

The fight for $15 protests are expected to span 200 cities in 30 countries across the world. Low-wage workers chose to hold the protests on Tax Day to bring attention to the fact that many of them need government aid to survive, Time notes.

Here’s what some Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) users are saying about the fight for $15.

  • “#FightFor15 goes beyond fast food, it’s about domestic workers, caregivers and more.”
  • “I never eat fast food but I feel moved to today. #capitalism #FightFor15″
  • “The #minimumwage should be raised, but $15 is a bit much. Many who have student loan debt don’t make that much. #Getreal #FightFor15″
  • “Our Free Enterprise system pays what you’re worth. If you are worth 15 an hour, and you’re dependable, you’ll get it. No gimmes #FightFor15″
  • “Mad love to everyone on the streets today fighting for #FightFor15 all over this country, #blacklivesmatter #blackandbrownsolidairty”

BREAKING NOW: NY FAST-FOOD WORKERS POISED TO MAKE HISTORY

GAME CHANGER: Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a plan to dramatically raise pay for hundreds of thousands of fast-food workers across New York state.

This is what happens when workers join together, go on strike, and demand $15.

Our two and a half year movement for $15 and union rights has changed the politics of the country, and made $15 a baseline for what working people need to support themselves and their families. In response, the governor of New York has convened a three-person Wage Board to decide on a substantial increase in fast-food worker pay.

What happens next is up to us.

Let’s make New York the first state in the union with a $15 wage for fast-food workers......

Raising the wages will either increase the prices of their food or make them find ways to hire less people to make it. Increasing the price of the food will probably severely hurt the company when other products of higher quality are available at the same price. And finding ways to hire less people will hurt the workforce. Some will benefit from increased wages while the others lose their jobs.

This is a glaring example how democracy and crony socialism go hand in hand.

That Indian origin woman who raised the minimum wage in Seattle caused so many offices to relocate out of Seattle.

There are many people who have college degrees who make about $15 an hour. If these McD's burger flippers, some of them uneducated beyond Middle or High School, also begin making $15 an hour, then this would be gross injustice to those that actually took care to get a college degree. Now, these workers will wonder why they bothered to take out educational loans to get a college education.

These guys should not have attended arts college for useless degrees. I don't think it is an injustice issue.

Hahaha this will distort the labor market and will spur the replacement of repetitive tasks by machines. In the short term this will lead to inflation too ....

Remember Henry Ford, you should pay enough, so that employees can buy your product. Ok, maybe then in this case you should make your product more healthy. This is interesting, if enough people work on this field and you rise their pay, that would stimulate the economy also other ways, because the rise of purchasing power.

Ford Model T was a death trap. Henry Ford refused to install brakes on the front wheels, despite that being the cause for many an accident.

http://www.barefootsworld.net/ford-t-specs.html

.....There were no water pumps, oil pumps, starters or generators to fail. The engine was hand cranked to start. There were no ordinary brakes, as such, instead there was a contracting band on a drum in the transmission. There were hand-lever operated emergency mechanical brakes on the rear wheels, which were rather inadequate except for parking .....
