People, please remeber one thing, the main difference between a light tank and a IFV/APC is the presence of a large bore/caliber main gun. Please dont turn this into an IFV/APC thread.

I would prefer the Stingray. (but the final call should only be taken after successful trials).

Since this is a American Product & the sole foreign operator is Thailand.

he ZBD97 (also known as Type 97) is a fully-tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) fielded by the PLA ground forces since 2006. The vehicle features a Russian BMP-3-style turret with a 100mm rifled main gun and a coaxial 30mm cannon, and is capable of firing anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) through the barrel of its main gun. The vehicle is in service with the armoured units in the Guangzhou and Nanjing military regions. An armoured recovery vehicle (ARV) variant is also available.

Design

The ZBD97 features a turret similar to that of the Russian BMP-3, which is mounted on an indigenously developed hull. Unlike the BMP-3, which has a rear-engine layout, the ZBD97 adopts a conventional layout with welded steel hull. The vehicle has a crew of three (commander, drive and gunner), and can carry up to seven soldiers. The power compartment is located at front-right, with the driver and a passenger seated in tandem to its left. The two-man turret is located in the middle.

The troop compartment is located on the rear of the vehicle. There are two large hatches on the troop compartment roof, and a single exit door in the rear. There are two observation ports on the either side of the hull, and one in the exit door. Three firing ports (left, right, and exit door) allow the infantrymen to fire assault rifles and light machine guns from inside the vehicle on the move. The troop compartment can accommodate up to six soldiers, with an additional soldier seated behind the driver.

The ZBD97 has six unevenly spaced road wheels, with three track support rollers and a front drive sprocket on each side. The road wheels and rollers are all rubber-tyred. Torsion bar suspensions with hydraulic shock absorbers are fitted on the 1st, 2nd, and 6th road wheels. The metallic tracks are fitted with removable rubber pads to improve the comfort of the passenger.

The vehicle design places great emphasis on the amphibious capability. Two large water jet ports are fitted on the rear of the vehicle for high-speed swimming. A hydraulically actuated wave fence is located at front, which, when raised, can prevent the front section of the vehicle from being overflowed during swimming. The speed of swimming is unknown but the vehicle is expected to be launched from amphibious warfare ships several miles off the shore.

Armament

The main armament of the ZBD97 is a dual-way stabilised, semi-automatic 100mm rifled gun / missile launcher, capable of firing both HE-FRAG rounds and the 3UBK10 (or its Chinese copy) ATGM. Effective range of the HE-FRAG round is estimated to be 4,000m, with a rate of fire of 10 rounds/minute.

The 3UBK10 ATGM consists of a laser beamriding missile and a container case. The missile is used as a part of the Bastion missile system (NATO reporting name: AT-10 Stabber). As well as engaging armoured vehicles and fortifications, the missile could also engage low-flying helicopters. The missile has a range of 100~4,000m. Hit probability is 80% and the armour penetration capability is 600mm. The system carries eight missiles inside the turret.

The secondary weapon include a 30mm coaxial automatic cannon, with 500 rounds. The cannon can fire both armour-piercing (AP) and HE-FRAG rounds. Rate of fire is 300 rounds/min and range is 1,500 to 2,000m. Like the BMP-3, the ZBD97 also has a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun located to the left of the main gun, but it lacks the two bow 7.62mm machine guns found on the BMD-3.

Protection

The ZBD97 is believed to be fitted with a collective NBC-protection system, with its air filter located behind the turret to the right. There is a three-barrel smoke grenade launcher mounted on either side of the turret. The vehicle lacks the ARENA-E active protection system found on the latest version of the BMP-3, but may be fitted with an indigenous laser warning and countermeasures system.

Observation and Fire-Control

The observation systems on the ZBD97 may be similar to those of the BMP-3. The The driver’s hatch mounts three periscopes, with the central periscope being able to be replaced by an image intensifying periscope for night vision. Two headlights are located on the front armour of the hull. The gunner has a main sight and a combined image-intensified day / night sight and a standby day sight. The commander has a day sight and a combined day and image-intensified night sight. Fire-control system includes a ballistic computer, an electro-mechanical gun stabiliser and a laser rangefinder.

Propulsion

It was reported that the ZBD97 is powered by a newly developed liquid-cooled diesel, giving a maximum road speed of 65km/h and swimming speed of 20km/h. The maximum range is 500km

Guys i'm seeing them fine can you see them now?
BR. I think Sino-Defence does not allow hot-linking, or in order to view images from there (even through hotlinking) you need to be a registered member. If that is the case, you need to upload the pics to DFI Gallery or Image hosting site, and then hotlink it.

Tosan - Light Tank (IRAN)

Entered service = 2008
Crew = 3 men
Dimensions and weight
Weight = ~ 8 t
Length = 4.9 m
Width = 2.2 m
Height = 2.1 m
Armament
Main gun = 90-mm
Traverse range = 360 degrees
Ammunition load
Main gun = ?
Machine guns = ?

Maximum road speed = ?
Range = ?
Maneuverability
Gradient = ~ 60%
Side slope = ?
Vertical step = ~ 0.5 m
Trench = ~ 2 m
Fording = ~ 1 m

This Vehicle is so light, that it can travel to forward operating areas on it's own, without wearing out it's running gear. It is worth mentioning that other tanks are usually carried by tank transporters over long distances. In Iran this armored vehicle is referred as the quick reaction tank, because of it's rapid response capability. This Vehicle is not amphibious.

Whatever Iran may call it, this cannot be called a tank. :)> This looks like a toy tank. Even the Humvee weighs 2.6 tons without armor. I think that even 12.7mm AP rounds can go right through this little buggy. :)>

Scorpion light tank - UK.

The FV101 Scorpion light tank, or armored reconnaissance vehicle by British classification, was developed in the late 60s. It is a part of the tracked combat vehicle CVR (T) family. The FV101 Scorpion entered service with the Royal Army in 1973. A total of 1241 Scorpions were built. In 1994 this vehicle was withdrawn from active service with the Royal army, but it still operational with export customers.

Vehicle is armed with L23A1 76-mm rifled gun and coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun. A small batch of 32 vehicles were fitted with a 90-mm main gun.

One of the main requirements for the FV101 was to make this light tank airportable. That's why a number of light alloys were used building this tank. Vehicle has a front-mounted engine, providing additional protection for the crew. Front armor protects against 14.5-mm projectiles, fired from 200 meter range. All-round protection is against 7.62-mm rounds and artillery shell splinters.

The FV101 has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver.

Initial production FV101 Scorpion light tanks were powered by the Jaguar 4.2-liter petrol engine (this is a TATA Group Company now). It was a standard car engine, however it's power was down-rated from 265 hp to 195 hp for longer service life. This engine was chosen because it was commercially available and had high power-to-weight ratio. Later it was replace with Perkins diesel engine, which had better fuel economy. Both engines had similar and performance.

The FV101 light tank can be fitted with floatation kit, which makes this vehicle amphibious. On water it is propelled by spinning it's tracks.
