V.K. Saraswat Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, told The Hindu , That the next interceptor missile test will be conducted at a higher altitude of 100-150 km in July it would be the most important one. “We have developed a new interceptor missile for it.”

Sources close to idrw.org have informed us that new Interceptor missile will be named the PDV , which is a advanced variant of Prithiv interceptor missile , In Current Phase – I Advanced Air Defense (AAD) missile and Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) forms a combination which are used to intercept enemy ballistic missiles . but PDV new missile will be replacing PAD and will have performance improvement .

PDV is a two-stage missile and both the stages will be powered by solid propellants. where else PAD was also a two-stage missile but first stage was solid fueled motor while the second stage was Liquid fueled, it will also have IIR seeker . once PDV is tested successfully , Phase-I of India’s Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) will be completed and Mumbai and Delhi will likely get PDV and AAD cover against missile defence by year end .

Phase-II will cover development of two new missile (AD-1 and AD-2) interceptors that can intercept IRBMs, new missile will be similar to the THAAD missile deployed by the U.S.A. These missiles will travel at hyper sonic speeds and will require radars with scan capability of over 1,500 km (930 mi) to successfully intercept the target and likely will be ready for deployment by 2016.

why can't we modify this as long range SAM since PAD On March 6, 2009 DRDO carried out a second successful test of the PAD interceptor missile. The target used was ship launched Dhanush missile which followed the trajectory of a missile with range of a 1,500 km (930 mi). The target was tracked by Swordfish (LRTR) radar and destroyed by the PAD at 75 km (47 mi) altitude

In another report the scientists have said that the AAD missile could be modified into a new extended range (up to 150 km (93 mi)) surface-to-air missile that could be possibly named as ‘Ashvin’ any news on this

Ballistic missile Interceptor is all about precision especially for a hit to kill, while Anti aircraft missile needs high agility. A single missile need not serve both the purpose.

SAM is like rifle and BMD is like sniper rifle. Hope you understand what i am saying.

According to Russia the Topol-M missile is designed to be immune to any current or planned US missile defence system. It is claimed to be capable of making evasive maneuvers to avoid a kill by terminal phase interceptors, and carries targeting countermeasures and decoys. If China gets this technology from Russia in secret (or China's friend Pakistan) then India's BMD system is of no use.

Well I am no expert but it seems for Intercepting a ballistic missile usually the warhead like section aka kill vehicle is calibrated to reach the target but for an anti aircraft missile it is the missile as a whole chasing the aircraft till it is in a proximity range, occasionally having a second stage or a booster for extended range.

BM interceptor is calibrated against target trajectory, envelop for interception , while anti aircraft launch just require a lock on range before launch.

Some historic SAM system like S-300 had nuclear warhead to annihilate anything that is within its blast radius, thus performing dual purpose.

Literally speaking anti ballistic missile do not chase the target but intercept it. While traditional anti aircraft missile hunts for the kill, chasing it as it performs an evasive maneuver.

These are just theories but I cannot guarantee that they cannot be used in a vis-a-vis role. with engineering proficiency as the limit of invention.

In simple Anti Ballistic missile performs lots of correction in its path for interception minute before the contact, while Anti Aircraft missile is all about agility to catch its prey as it tries to run away.

interceptor need very good radar to track the target, i think even if missile is very very fast, if you can target it and send low speed missile on its trajectory you can a kill.

Their are more contradiction as if, what if enemy missiles are in large numbers? If the system can engage say 10 missiles at one time, what if their are 11 incomings ?

Yes it seems, offensive is the best defensive tactics, one fine decision of Indian policy makers (NOTE: no Congress/BJP) to have nuclear weapon

Pay what we have done is practically made Pakistan bankrupt, if you have been seeing in last 5 years they have increased their nukes and missile at alarming rate, this is due to our BMD, what will result of this, PA will be forced to make more nukes and nuke unlike other things are very expensive to maintain and they dont give you anything except sense of security. Pakistani Janta who has lived eating grass, will suffer, you must have seen their train system is in mess they dont have engines or funds, same is true about their electricity. Only military is prospering but army per say does not contribute any economic activity. So they are in vicious circle of having spend spend and spend on nukes with no end in sight and our BMD is telling them look we are going to intercept all you can throw, so they will be forced to make more nukes and missile.

yes Saya, another advantage of BMD is if by accident any rouge element (like the Jihadi) get a hand of a missile or two it can be successful repelled, maybe even preventing a war !!! :noidea:

The core difference lies in the air-frame design. This difference is because of their different flight path.
ABM are designed for max speed, max pressure on impact and less maneuverability. If you see ABM is always launched in intercept phase. Change in their flight path dramatically reduces their range and speed. TVC is something very new to ABM. This is epically true in upper atmosphere where the missile is not to maneuver but just stay on intercept course. Incoming ballistic can't just change its course and have a predetermined course.
On the contrary air crafts are highly maneuverable and can change their course at any point of time. Hence SAM need to be highly maneuverable and their airframe is built for that.
Hence same missile can't effectively perform both roles.

How you get on such conclusion that Indian BMD system is not prepared for such case ?
