Delhi University's revamped exam system to begin in December

The Delhi University has brought a series of changes to its examination system. These will be applicable from December.

Each answerscript will now carry the student’s name, his father’s name and the name of his college. A board of three examiners will frame the question paper and the departments will no longer have to moderate question papers in case of any discrepancy.

While teachers have not received any notice from the university regarding the display of students’ details in the answer scripts, the university has sent letters to departments, directing them to constitute a board of examiners for setting question papers.

A letter from the Controller of Examinations Dr D S Jaggi, issued to the Department of Physics, reads: “The question papers are set by a Board of Examiners and there would be no moderation of the question papers henceforth.”

“Until now, the scripts used to have a numerical code and not the students’ name. Thus, the evaluator could not have known the identity of the student,” Abha Dev Habib, who teaches Physics in Miranda House, said.

“I don’t think mentioning students’ details is a good idea. The possibility of rigging increases if this happens,” Seema Das, a Political Science teacher in Hindu College, said.

University officials said despite the changes, there were checks and balances in the system. “As far as answerscripts carrying details of the student is concerned, we should trust the teaching community. Teachers know the students when they conduct internal assessments and practical exams. Despite this, the university has not yet received any complaint of any bias based on religion and caste,” the official said.

Wow! Okay, so are they also increasing the weightage of marks scored in class 12/graduation in the professional course one will compete for? Back in days when we were giving all such competitive exams, class 12/graduation marks were only an eligibility criteria for appearing in such an exam, how are the things now?

They have also increased undergraduate course from 3 year to 4 year! In first year all students will have common subjects irrespective of whether you pick BA, B.Com or Engineering.

    Not looking good!

What is the advantage of putting the names of the students on the answer sheets? The whole idea was to give anonymity as well as to prevent bias.

Somebody needs to stop this immediately.
