The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing a new, Pakistan-centric nuclear missile that will be equipped with sophisticated technology used in intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) such as Agni-IV. The new missile, Agni-1P, will replace Prithvi and Agni-1, developed with relatively low-end technology in the early 1990s, and will reportedly have a range of 300 to 700 kilometres.

If reports in the media are true, the Agni-1P will be a two-stage, solid propellant missile with both stages comprising composite rocket motors, guidance systems with electro-mechanical actuators, and inertial navigation systems based on advanced ring-laser gyroscopes.

With new findings, DRDO has now mastered the technology, and with what it has called ‘backward integration of technology,’ now plans to replace missiles that have low accuracy.

With its short range, the missile will predominantly be Pakistan-centric and will reportedly be much more accurate than Agni-I. It will allow India to strike targets in Pakistan with increased precision in the event of a contingency. Increased precision, in turn, will enable India to use relatively low-yield nuclear weapons.

What is wrong with good old Agni 1....

I think Agni 1 has CEP of 50 meters may not be enough to hit a deep bunker with conventional warheads bot more than enough with a nuclear one...

It seems that there is more than just replacment for Pruthvi & Agni 1.... DRDO gets ti work on new tech probably MARV version of warheads(my speculation only)..

Maybe its a missile with new tech. they have already mentioned the change in propulsion system, they might have tweeked warhead delivery system.?

Agni was single stage this is a two stage missle. DRDO has learned a lot since the development
of AGNI they are incorporating this in this missile. CEP of 50 is better than almost all Pak missiles
and many Chinese missile.

Agni was single stage this is a two stage missle. DRDO has learned a lot since the development
of AGNI they are incorporating this in this missile. CEP of 50 is better than almost all Pak missiles
and many Chinese missile.
LF earlier they made Agni 1 out of Agni missile, because they wanted to use the Agni missile from center of India, so that Prthvi which are short range missile, need not have to travel with nukes on road or rail up to the border. So DRDO wanted to have single stage missile capable of taking out Pakistani target from the central India. This missile A1 was hurried up in fastest possible time. It was made single stage so that in one short it would be take out intended target.

Now this new missile with two stages, it appears that DRDO want to reduce the missile's RCS at reentry stage, so that Pakistani wont be able to track it or at least use any countermeasures on it.

It also appears that DRDO and SFC wants to take out heavily build nuke bunkers on or near Pindi area. When two stage accurate missile which can hit directly on this bunkers can take them out, in case Pakistanis first attack us either in their own country or on our soil.

It pay happen that Agni1p(Prime or Pakistani special) might be containerised missile, that way it will be easy and fast to respond to Paki nuke attack.

What abt costs. Prithvi 2 costs only 5 crores a piece. It makes sense to use this missile only to target hardened bunkers in pindi

I am sure the P in Agni-1P stands for Prithvi and not for Pakistan or Prime as predicted, these missiles are designed to replace Prithvi / , which are bulky in design and has CEP of 50 not good as per today's missile delivery standards.

“As our ballistic missiles grew in range, our technology grew in sophistication. Now the early, short-range missiles, which incorporate older technologies, will be replaced by missiles with more advanced technologies. Call it backward integration of technology,” explains a senior DRDO missile scientist who wishes to remain anonymous.

So, because of it's Range of (300-700 kms), it becomes only criteria to name it as Pakistancentric, which i don't think is needed, as world knows 90% of nuclear threat is from pakistan and our program is mostly Pakistancentric, but surely factor of backward integration of technology in the missiles of 80s and 90s is important and should be considered. Coz, in a war like scenario, it is going to be who hits first and fast. Pakistan knows we already are on the verge of deploying missile functional defence sheild (Ashwin/AAD) so their old bulky missiles will go into waste. They will rely on Babur their Cruise missile to be the key player against India.

India should also try to replace technology of bulky missiles like Agn-2 and 3 with that one used in Agni-4and5.

Agni-2P (Prime) intermediate ballistic missile, was later named as Agni 4, same way Agni 1P mean Agni 1Prime.

Agni 1P was posted purposefully to be Pakistan, just to give some attention to Pakis................:rofl:

The lean and tall Agni if it gets shorter and a bit of fat for Agni I equivalent won't matter. Prithvi almost sat on the Tatra truck, a bit shorter A1p on sealed canister would be great

Like some improved version of Iskander

The most important thing is that it is 2 stage like agni II? Old Agni I was a single stage missile. Can anybody explain why?

Twin stage for such a small range ..... does not look right ... :shock:

The news was reported earlier as well .

This is from 2015 ,



No ideas if it's the same one .
Last time when Agni P was tested, It was declared that It was a 2 stage missile opposite to old Agni 1 which was a single stage missile .

New Delhi:
India successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Agni Prime ballistic missile - a more advanced version of the Agni class of missiles - from a location off the Odisha coast on Monday morning.

A statement by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, or DRDO, said the successful test - which began at 10.55 am - was a "textbook launch", and took place at a testing facility on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island, which located is around 150 km east of Bhubaneswar.

"Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. It followed textbook trajectory... meeting all mission objectives with a high level of accuracy," the DRDO statement said.

The Agni Prime missile is a next-generation, nuclear-capable weapon made fully of a composite material, sources added. It is a canisterised missile with range of 1,000-2,000 kilometres, they said.


Two days ago the DRDO also successfully test fired an extended range version of the indigenously developed 'Pinaka' rocket from the Integrated Test Range in Odisha's Chandipur.

A total of 25 'enhanced pinaka' rockets - launched from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) - were fired in quick succession at targets at different ranges.

An official quoted by news agency PTI said all mission objectives had been met and that the enhanced range version could destroy targets at distances up to 45 kilometres.

In March the DRDO also successfully test-fired a missile with a unique propulsion system - one based on solid fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) technology from the ITR in Chandipur.


The DRDO said all subsystems performed as expected and that SFDR technology would it a big advantage in developing long-range air-to-air missiles.

India successfully carried out the test-firing of a new missile in the Agni series known as Agni P on Monday off the coast of Odisha, officials said. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested the new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island at 10:55am off the coast of Odisha. “Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. Agni P is the first of the new class of Agni missile to be launched by DRDO. The ballistic missile weighs 50% less than Agni 3 and has new guidance and a new generation of propulsion. Since the missile is canisterised, it can be launched from rail and road and stored for a longer period and transported all across the country as per operational requirements.

The missile, which has a range between 1000km to 2000km, can be used to target enemy armadas in the Indo-Pacific.

Last Friday, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired an extended range version of indigenously-developed Pinaka rocket at Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.

That day, 25 Enhanced Pinaka rockets, which can destroy targets at distances up to 45 kilometres, were test-fired in quick succession against targets at different ranges on Thursday and Friday. The 122 mm Caliber rockets were also launched from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL).
