Nehru Government Spied on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Family, Reveal Declassified Files

NEW DELHI: Intelligence Bureau kept relatives of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose under close surveillance for two decades, most of which was during Jawaharlal Nehru's tenure as Prime Minister, according to archival material, which has set off a political controversy.
The Intelligence Bureau files declassified recently said Netaji's close relatives, including his two nephews Sisir Kumar Bose and Amiya Nath Bose - sons of his brother Sarat Chandra Bose - were spied upon for 20 years between 1948 and 1968.

Mr Nehru was Prime Minister for 16 of these 20 years.

The files, now with the National Archives, said the Bose family homes at 1, Woodburn Park and 38/2 Elgin Road, were kept under surveillance.
The Intelligence Bureau officials intercepted and copied letters written by the Bose family and even trailed them on foreign tours.

Netaji's family reacted to reports with "shock" and said it was a "poor reflection" on the quality of democracy at that time.

"Yes, it is a poor reflection on the quality of India's democracy in the first two decades that there was such invasion of privacy of freedom fighters. It is not just a family matter.

"The most disgraceful aspect of this surveillance is that private letters between my father and his aunt (Netaji's wife) were being opened and read and copied. It's a matter of great disrespect to the freedom struggle and freedom fighters," Sugata Bose, his grandnephew and Trinamool Congress lawmaker said.

"It's shocking to the family members. Now we know that under instructions from Pandit Nehru the government kept surveillance," said Chandra Kumar Bose, Netaji's other grandnephew.

Anuj Dhar, the author of 'India's Biggest Cover-up' had stumbled upon the files at the National Archives while researching on Bose, one of the foremost leaders of the freedom movement.

Netaji had quit Congress before Independence over differences with Mr Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi and launched an organised military resistance against the British after raising the Indian National Army.

We should also change our edu system in a big way . give facts in our history books that how greedy and moron Nehru was . it was his weak policies which made us loose 1962 war and we r still in talks for Aksai Chin and Arunachal .

Once PM Atlee when visited India said to a Judge in kolkata that they left India because of INA and Netaji , not because of Congress or Satyagrah like drama . Why don't we even include these things in our books ?

    Who got us freedom?

When B.P. Chakravarti was acting as Governor of West Bengal, Lord Attlee visited India and stayed as his guest for three days at the Raj Bhavan. Chakravarti asked Attlee about the real grounds for granting independence to India. Specifically, his question was, when the Quit India movement lay in ruins years before 1947 where was the need for the British to leave in such a hurry. Attlee’s response is most illuminating and important for history. Here is the Governor’s account of what Attlee told him:

In reply Attlee cited several reasons, the most important were the activities of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose which weakened the very foundation of the attachment of the Indian land and naval forces to the British Government. Towards the end, I asked Lord Attlee about the extent to which the British decision to quit India was influenced by Gandhi’s activities. On hearing this question Attlee’s lips widened in a smile of disdain and he uttered, slowly, putting emphasis on each single letter – “mi-ni-mal.” (Emphasis added.)

Chakravarti later mentioned this conversation with Attlee in a speech broadcast on All India Radio, but left out all references to Gandhi. (He should not have.) Majumdar had reached the same conclusion years earlier, as far back as 1948. This writer (Rajaram) can support the conclusion on the basis of discussions with men and officers of the Indian armed forces of the period – including his own relatives. In any event, we have Attlee’s own authoritative words.

The crucial point to note is that thanks to Subhas Bose’s activities, the Indian Armed Forces began to see themselves as defenders of India rather than of the British Empire. This, more than anything else, was what led to India’s freedom. This is also the reason why the British Empire disappeared from the face of the earth within an astonishingly short space of twenty years. Indian soldiers, who were the main prop of the Empire, were no longer willing to fight to hold it together.

This also accounts for the outwardly puzzling fact that the Congress Party, dominated by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, has tried to turn Subhas Bose into a persona non grata. He poses a serious threat to the political dominance of the dynasty, and could even jeopardize it, taking with it the power and privileges that have accrued to its beneficiaries. Thanks to the Congress domination of Indian institutions for over forty years, history books have been written to serve its interests. This is one of the significant conclusions to follow from a reexamination of recent Indian history.

So what if the family was spied upon ?
