Sixty five years on, India is poised to get into the big league of nations.

Unity in diversity has been the motto and it's all good, but have we as a nation failed to develop, post independence a "nationalist Indian" identity? We are still mired in regionalism, casteism, religious bickering. Why have we failed to look beyond all such divides to forge a new identity based on what we EARNED after a hard fought independence movement, a country for ourselves named Bharat/India.

An artificial identity can't be forged by simply indoctrinating people to be loyal to the "constitution" and "India"

There cannot be a nationalistic identity for India. If there ever is it has to be an artificial one. Our diversity is our identity, which is kind of an oxymoron.

Indians don't even have a common "Idea of India". Jingoism on internet fora and repeating 'sickular', 'congrass' 'pukis' 10 times doesn't count.

it is not wrong you have regional/linguistic/religious/cast identity.
India recognise all region/language/religion/cast people of indian land as its cityzen.
But we all should give importance our first identity being as indian.

No, we can have a natural nationalistic identity There is historic precedence, but my suggestions will derail the thread, attract trolls and cause a flamewar :troll:

No hatred is shown in Wagha, if I am not wrong, it is a single example.

Let me put it this way. In ancient times, Indians had a pretty clear idea of "us vs them". Foreigners were Mleccha

Wagha is not a bashing platform but a tourist visit place where people from all over India come for a visit, many dont dislike a Pakistani but when 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' is being chanted its remarkable to watch. A platform where people of all corners have a chance to meet and express their love for the motherland.

What are the criterion for deciding the Nationalist Indian Identity ? :wat:

BTW after independence we became a nation which gave us citizenship which is our identity, but if you want to dig it deeper you will have to leave non-native people out of the context, which will bring criticism by those who fault-fully see India as a place which didn't have a "native identity" before the arrival of Muslims or British.

No, that is not correct clearly. We know a united India/Bharat existed several times in ancient times that united what is most of India today as well as Pakistan, BD and Afghanistan [talking about Mauryan/Gupta empires], contemporary to the ancient Romans and Greeks and much before the Arabian peninsula awakened to meaningful civilisation. There were peoples who came and stayed on and became part of this country and then there were peoples who conquered but were themselves defeated and turned back. We have to take note of history and move on. The great thing is while the Roman and Greek and the Egyptian civilisations disappeared, Indian civilisation continues to thrive despite so many onslaughts!

We can say modern India has a multi-religious identity as people belonging to Dharmic faiths native to the sub-continent and the Abrahaimic faiths live together in harmony (most of the time) and has many languages and cultures spread across the different states. This is our national identity.

I'd say same thing will happen to most liberal secular democracies such as India in course of time.
