Why cant GTRE enter the tender for Engine development? Its easier to make engines for commercial jets rather than fighter jets, i am sure the GTRE pool can definitely come up with an good engine.

It would take a century if they started working on that. You know our government's track record with wasting our national wealth on wastrels called sarkari dodos. It would be a miracle if they can get RTA-70 in air before 2030, forget the imaginary figure of 2017 (seriously, whom are they trying to fool? How many projects have they completed without glitches and on time?). By that time, Chinese would be flying supersonic commercial jets locally made.

India developing first civilian aircraft

NEW DELHI (PTI): India is developing its first civilian aircraft, which would be a 70 to 90-seater plane catering to the regional market, and a feasibility study is currently on, a top scientist said Tuesday.

"We are looking at creating a Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) which would be 70 or a 90-seater. The feasibility study is being carried out now," M R Nayak, Advisor and Chief Scientist at the state-owned National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) said here.

A high-powered committee headed by former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) G Madhavan Nair has already been set up to guide the project.

He said the aircraft would be developed through the public-private partnership (PPP) mode. Besides NAL which is the nodal agency for the project, the public sector firms participating in the project are HAL, DRDO, ISRP, BEL and ADA, while those in the private sector included HCL, QUEST, Infosys, Mahindras, L&T and Tata Group.

Nayak was speaking at a meeting of Indo-US aviation manufacturers, where Boeing India President Dinesh Keskar said the growing aviation market in the country had greatly enhanced the opportunities for businesses of both countries to collaborate in such projects.

Keskar said India would require 1,150 civilian planes, worth USD 130 billion, over the next two decades, and another USD 30 billion worth of military aircraft, missiles and other aerospace equipment.

The Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) is being developed to have a range of 800 kilometres, making it conducive for travel within India due to the close proximity of Tier-I and Tier-II cities.

Reports said as many as 400 RTAs were planned to be manufactured with half of them going to the armed forces. NAL was in discussions with global engine manufacturers including Pratt & Whitney of Canada and General Electric of US, and avionics firms like Rockwell Collins and Diehl Aerospace.

Addressing the meet, Aaron Wilkins, Indian representative of US regulator Federal Aviation Administration FAA, stressed on joint efforts to enhance quality of Indian http://www.brahmand.com/news/India-developing-first-civilian-aircraft/6894/1/18.html#Aviation processes and achieve standardisation of Indian equipment.

He said as many as 21 training programmes were being offered on aviation-related technical issues in the country under the US-India Aviation Cooperation Programme.

With fast-paced developments in aviation technology, DGCA was in the process of upgrading its process of certifying the new technologies, A K Saran, Joint Director General of the DGCA, said.

having one year time to decide the feasibility of the aircraft like RTA-70 is too much provided they admit that competition in this segment is very tough and economist foresee huge demand in emerging countries...
what are they assessing??? can they make one or not. or can they deliver it on time with the config they wanted.
one not being able to multi-task have no place in capitalist market economy.

they should focus on delivering instead of being involved in any other thing except this.
btw without having proper research mindset they should only focus on making/manufacturing planes just like maruti does while suzuki develops and in later stage if they ever get wisdom then they may start research.

Indian air force to buy 15 Saras twin turboprops as trainers

The Indian air force will buy 15 National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) Saras 14-seat multi-role transport aircraft for use as trainers.
The twin-engine, push-prop aircraft will be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) in Bengaluru, an industry source said. Three will be delivered in 2014, with another four to be delivered yearly over the next three years.
The air force will use the aircraft to train flight crews for its large and medium-sized transport aircraft, such as the Boeing C-17, Ilyushin Il-76 and Antonov An-32. It may ultimately acquire 50 Saras aircraft, the source said. These will be used for a range of roles.
In addition, the Indian navy may get about 25 Saras aircraft for use as land-based coastal patrol aircraft. A working naval example of the navalised Saras will be rolled out in 2014.
"The maritime version is still in the preliminary design stage," the source said. "It will have modifications to help it perform in the maritime environment."
Three Saras prototypes have been produced so far. The second was lost in a 2009 crash that killed all three of its crew members. Investigators attributed the accident to pilot error, noting that the military test pilots had been trying to relight an engine with insufficient recovery altitude moments before the incident.
The third prototype, which features a new glass cockpit, was a replacement for this aircraft.
The Saras made its first flight in 2004, 18 years after the programme's inception. However, in the following years the NAL struggled to reduce the aircraft's weight, making progress by introducing composite tails and wings, and reducing the number of bulkheads in the aircraft's third prototype.

One tandem seating and other is side-by-side seating.

NM-5 is a 5 seater transport AC if you want to change it in to something like tucano it is not possible, i would rather start it from scratch as a different project.

Kunal!! the cockpit of HTT-35 ? it is completely filled with MFDs ,making it a glass cockpit.... that too in the 1990s.. it looks better than IJT cockpit!!!! Every time a new chairman comes ,the agenda changes and the priorities too!!! HAL programmes are run based on IAF interests!!! why cant Mahindra or TAAL take up HTT-35 designs and fabricate it?

I am not up to date on the technological advancement so far achieved by metalurgical industry in India. I know in the early days of HAL when HF-24 and AVRO were being developed we did face the challenges on the manufacturing front specially fuselage and wings part of the aeroplanes. What percentage of the final product is really locally sourced and how much is foreign made?
