Narendra Modi to visit Japan from Sunday, meet top bosses of Suzuki - The Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi will be on a five-day tour of Japan from Sunday to expand business ties with that country and will also meet auto major Maruti Suzuki's top brass, official sources said.

Modi, who will be accompanied by a business delegation will visit Hamamatsu to meet Maruti Suzuki Corporation managing director Shinzo Nakanishi.

His visit comes in the wake of the violent incidents in Maruti Suzuki's plant at Manesar in Haryana.

Even though the Modi-led delegation will not pitch for expanding the production capacity of the company in Gujarat, if the company on its own decides to expand its production capacity, it is welcome, Gujarat officials said.

"The view of the Gujarat government is very clear on attracting corporates in the state. We do not want to harm anybody's interests. However, whosoever wants to come here and expand his production capacity is welcome," Gujarat principal secretary (industries) Maheshwar Sahu told PTI.

Modi's visit to Japan, however, has sparked off speculation that during his meeting with the Maruti Suzuki representatives, he would try to convince them to expand the carmaker's production capacity in Gujarat from the proposed 2,50,000 units annually.

Maruti Suzuki has already proposed to invest Rs 4,000 crore in Gujarat to set up a green field project, having an annual production capacity of 2,50,000 cars near Becharaji in Mehasna district.

"Modi has been officially invited by the government of Japan. Normally, they invite the head of country, but Modi being the chief minister of a state in India, is going to Japan as a state guest," official sources said.

Besides Hamamastu, Modi will be visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe prefectures of Japan. He will be addressing three seminars, one round-table and also interacting with top functionaries of Japanese government during the visit, they added.

Modi will also be travelling by a bullet train and study the reconstruction done by that country following the earthquake in Kobe prefecture, they added.

This is likely to be Modi's last foreign trip before the state elections scheduled to be held in December this year.

The purpose of the visit is to expand business ties between Gujarat and Japan, they said adding that the large area of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) passes through Gujarat and the state sees huge potential of investment from Japan.

Japan had also partnered last year in the biennial 'Vibrant Gujarat Global Investor Summit', they said.

maharastra is suffering power crisis and karnataka from drought, which industry will go there without the 2 basic necessities?
Power crisis affects mostly only the private residences..when corporate sign deals the govt is contractually obliged to supply power 24*7...

This is not to dispute that TN and Gujarat are the most preferred destintions..but only to say MH and KA are not that far off..

that's not what i read
Maharashtra: Power shortage takes a toll on industries - India News - IBNLive

One of Asia's largest auto hubs in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, a thriving industrial district is let down by one basic problem - power. This plant using high-tension electricity to melt copper and brass to make engine parts for auto majors is one of almost 8000 small scale auto ancillaries plagued by year-round power cuts, resulting in huge losses.

Sushil Agarwal, Rishap Industries, says, "They cut power without intimating us. Our electric furnace gets spoilt and we face losses."

This is not to dispute that TN and Gujarat are the most preferred destintions..but only to say MH and KA are not that far off..
I think they used to be, now they have fallen behind

Ok..maybe the situation in MH is different..

IN TN, when large industries sign up they are offered power and water 24*7 in the contract...
And there lies the secret of TN's success, being pro-active and catering to the needs of industry, other states can learn from it rather than play petty politics.

CM’s 4 day visit to Japan will strengthen ties between Gujarat & Japan « Home | www.narendramodi.in
Narendra Modi's 4-day Japan visit a historical one that will further the strong relationship between Gujarat and Japan that has developed in the last decade.Wide scale optimism generated from this visit on both sides. Japan has partnered the Vibrant Gujarat Summits and is also associated with DMIC project of which Gujarat is a major stakeholder and beneficiary. Highest levels of Japan's political and industrial leadership to engage with Shri Modi during his visit. Like always, Shri Modi will meet Indian community based in Japan

On the morning of 22nd July 2012, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi will fly to Japan on a 4-day visit. Invited by the Japanese Government, Shri Modi's visit will be a historic one that will strengthen mutual ties between Gujarat and Japan. This visit is yet another example of the warm ties Japan and Gujarat have shared over the past decade. It has been a partner nation for the last 2 Vibrant Gujarat biennial summits. Shri Modi had visited Japan in April 2007 in a visit that set the stage for a long lasting relation between Gujarat and Japan. In addition, Shri Modi has also met former Japanese PMs and delegations from Japan on various occasions. This focus of his visit starting 22nd July is to improve both economic and as well as cultural relations between India's fastest growing state and Japan. His 4-day visit will be a comprehensive one involving 44 programmes spread across 4 provinces during which he will interact with Japan's top leaders, engage with the top business groups and even interact with India related forums based there.Shri Modi will interact with the highest echelons of Japan's political leadership. He will meet Japan's Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Katsuya Okada in Tokyo. Just recently in January 2012, Mr. Okada had lauded Gujarat's growth story when he visited India. He will also meet former Japanese Prime Ministers Mr. Shinzo Abe and Mr. Yasuo Fukuda. Mr. Abe had even met Shri Modi during his 2007 visit to Japan. In addition he will meet top Cabinet Minister including Japan's Trade & Industry Minister Mr. Yukio Edano, Foreign Minister Mr. Koichiro Gemba and Land, Infrastructure, Transport, Tourism Minister Mr. Yuichiro Hata.Understandably, a part of the visit will be spent in strengthening economic cooperation and this will include Shri Modi meeting some of the top figures in Japanese industry. This includes the Chairman of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and top executives of all major Japanese companies Sumitomo, IHI Corporation, BTMU, Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi & Itochu Corporation and Suzuki.

The Chief Minister will travel from Tokyo to Hamamatsu and then from Hamamatsu to Nagoya by Japan's Bullet train thus having a first hand experience of the ride. He will also discuss Bullet Train projects on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune section and the Ahmedabad-Dholera Metro Train in addition to 2 Japanese industrial parks to be set up by Japan in Gujarat as a part of DMIC. Gujarat is both a major stakeholder and a beneficiary of the DMIC project apart from occupying the maximum land portion in this ambitious project. Shri Modi will also visit Bay Area of the Kobe port in context of the proposed Dholera SIR.He will even share Gujarat's experience in disaster management with Japan in the light of the quakes in Japan. During all his travels overseas, something that Shri Modi particularly looks forward to is to engage with the Indian community based wherever he goes. This time too he would attend reception with the Indian and Gujarati communities in Japan and even interact with Indian engineers working with Suzuki Motors. Similar programmes would be held with the Indian Centre Foundation at Tokyo and a meeting with the Japan-India Parliamentarians'' Friendship League.A delegation of industrialists and Government officials will accompany Shri Modi in this trip. This visit has generated tremendous optimism among the people across both sides. Japan's leading business daily Nikkei covered Shri Modi's visit in which it charts out Gujarat's development under Shri Modi, who is described as an 'investor friendly leader of India.' Thus, it is truly a win-win situation for both Gujarat as well as Japan.

It is. The Japanese are no nonsense people. They worship productivity and performance. Naturally Modi is someone they would prefer rather than any other leader from India.

only Gujarat and TN give strong backing for industrial projects, rest of india will soon become like lalu's bihar, suffering under a corrupt elite
Can anyone even think Yadav and Yadav Co Ltd or Mayawati Enterprises going to any foreign countries and do some business like this? They would destroy whatever bheekh they get by begging from Central Govt and keep UP as a synonym of "backward state" for the next 500 years.

On topic... Good going MODI, the business would help improve lives of everyone in Gujrat and overall set example for other states as well. They have broken the legacy of Punjab being #1 state of India. :thumb:

If the Suzuki people do not stop the Japanese culture of working, no matter where the plants are, there will be huge trouble.

This shows the impotency of MMS/Sonia/Raul and their corrupt govt. These trio are on a mission to destroy India. This is actually INSULT to them that they didn't get any invite but the BJP MODI got.

Japanese are one of the MOST hard working people and we got a lot to learn from them. We(where I work) got projects from Japan and it amazes me how perfect they want their work to be.

On Japan tour, Modi is seen as India's rising sun | Firstpost

On Japan tour, Modi is seen as India's rising sun

The only things redder than the red carpet that Japanese government officials have unrolled for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today are the faces of his dissidents in his home State, and his detractors elsewhere who are looking to declare him persona non grata on his home turf.

On the same day that Keshubhai Patel was painting a grim picture in the media projecting Gujarat as as a living hell for people, and when the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar remains locked down following last week's horrific trade union violence, Japanese officials are reinforcing their faith in him to provide a stable and business-friendly environment for Japanese investments. And Japanese businesses are putting their money where their mouth is.

Modi is being received with protocol befitting a Cabinet-ranking Minister of the Union, which in the Warrant of Precedence, is higher than that of a chief minister outside the state. The symbolism of the reception protocol is noteworthy, particularly because it contrasts with the reluctance in western capitals to dissociate the 2002 Gujarat riots from their assessment of Modi's record in office.

Influential Japanese media have used Modi's four-day visit that began on Sunday as an occasion to reacquaint their readers and leaders with the larger story of Gujarat's rise as a business-friendly state under Modi's watch, and the evolving perception of Modi himself as potential Prime Minister.

Industrial safety is uppermost in Japanese businessmen's minds today, given the shocking events at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar last week, and the timing of Modi's visit, during which he will also meet top Suzuki executives, couldn't have been more propitious from an Indian perspective.

At a time when Central and Harayana leaders have failed to reassure investors outraged by the attack at the Manesar plant and other incidents of violence targeting corporate executives, Modi's presence among the community that's been most severely affected by the Manesar violence is having a becalming effect.

Faced with the prospect of losing over Rs 50 crore a day, Suzuki officials are justifiably incensed, and although the violence happened in another state, Modi isn't playing politics on the issue, but delivering a confidence-building message on behalf of not just Gujarat but the whole of India.

In an interview to a leading Japanese business daily ahead of his visit, Modi articulated a pan-Indian vision, noting that Gujarat's developmental model, with its emphasis on building infrastructure and providing an enabling environment for international businesses to thrive, could be applied across India. People across India, he said, had expectations of a better lifestyle, and only economic growth could deliver that.

The Japanese newspaper noted that in contrast to many other states, Gujarat was a haven for international investors: its government, headed by Modi, was responsive to investors' needs and, just as important, could deliver, it added. It is this that reinforced the perception among international leaders that Modi is someone they could do business with. He is, it intoned, a strikingly different leader who had earned their respect.
Japanese newspaper just turned Internet Hindu.:suspicious:

Over the next three days, Modi will attend 44 events and meet with top leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition, including the Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada and former Prime ministers Yasuo Fukuda and Shinzo Abe.

In addition to meeting top Japanese industry leaders, Modi will travel by bullet train from Tokyo to Hamamatsu and then on to Nagoya, a 350 km distance that the Shinkansen does in about 100 minutes.

Modi is looking to introduce the bullet train project on the Ahmedabad-Surat-Mumbai-Pune route; additionally, Gujarat is in talks with Japanese officials to set up two Japanese industrial parks in Gujarat as part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. All his public events will be streamed live here.

It's a wonderful feeling hearing him speak Hindi in front of Japanese people, pitching for India, pitching for his state. It is a matter of great pride for all true Indians.
