Sonia Gandhi admitted to NY's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Sonia Gandhi admitted to NY's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The leader of India's ruling party and head of its political dynasty, Sonia Gandhi, is to undergo surgery in the United States and will leave her son jointly in charge, a spokesman said on Thursday.

Gandhi, 64, is to have an operation for an unspecified condition, ruling Congress spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi said, refusing to give further details.

"On the advice of her doctors, she travelled abroad and she is likely to be away for two to three weeks," Dwivedi said, adding that she would have the surgery in two to three days.

Tehelka news magazine said on microblogging site Twitter that Gandhi was admitted on Thursday to New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the world's largest private cancer centre according to the hospital website. According to Tehelka, renowned oncologist Dr Dattatreyudu Nori, director of the cancer centre at the New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, is attending on Sonia Gandhi.

Italian-born Gandhi is the widow of assassinated former premier Rajiv Gandhi and widely seen as India's most powerful politician, with her key power-broking position as Congress president.

Dwivedi said that in her absence, Gandhi had appointed a four-member group to handle the day-to-day running of the Congress -- including her son Rahul Gandhi, who is tipped as a future prime minister.

In January 2009, current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh underwent heart bypass surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has ruled India for most of is post-independence history, with three members of the family becoming Prime Minister.

Sonia Gandhi holds total sway within the Congress and is credited with crafting the strategies that gave the party back-to-back general election victories in 2004 and 2009.

She will miss the start of a crucial session of parliament for the scandal-plagued government which intends to introduce draft laws on a range of key areas, including corruption, land acquisition and food security.

Gandhi's absence for the opening of the new session on Monday was noted in the Indian media but explained by an apparent "viral infection" she was said to be suffering from.

Dwivedi initially said that Gandhi had already undergone surgery, but he later retracted the statement.

The mother of two arrived in India as the shy bride of Rajiv Gandhi in her early 20s, and was transformed into a sari-clad Indian who now speaks fluent Hindi.

Her years in the Gandhi household, when her autocratic mother-in-law Indira -- slain in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards -- was premier, gave her an intimate insight into India's turbulent politics.

Rajiv Gandhi became premier in 1984 and was assassinated in 1991 by a suicide bomber.

Sonia Gandhi, who has described herself as "a reluctant politician," took charge of the Congress in 1998, becoming the fifth member of the powerful Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to serve as party chief.

Although she was hailed as the architect of the 2004 election victory, she eschewed calls to become Prime Minister and handed the post to the current incumbent Singh, partly due to concerns about a political backlash over her foreign origins.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, now the main opposition party, had once referred to her as a "foreign doll."

Sonia Gandhi Undergoes Surgery in the U.S. - WSJ.com

Sonia Gandhi Undergoes Surgery in the U.S.

NEW DELHI – Sonia Gandhi, president of India's ruling Congress party, underwent a successful surgery in the United States for an undisclosed medical condition and will be away from India for two to three weeks, a party official told reporters in a Thursday news conference.
The official, Janardan Dwivedi, would not comment on the specifics of Mrs. Gandhi's condition. Mr. Dwivedi said he and three other Congress officials -- Defense Minister A.K. Antony, political secretary Ahmed Patel and Mrs. Gandhi's son, Rahul Gandhi -- will look after party affairs while she is gone.

"On advice from her doctors, she had traveled abroad and is likely to be away for two to three weeks," Mr. Dwivedi said. The surgery was successful, he said.

Mrs. Gandhi, 64, has emerged as a powerful force in Indian politics since the current Congress party-led government came to power in 2004. The Italian-born politician, the widow of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was reluctant to enter politics but now wields enormous influence over the government's agenda. She has staunchly advocated major welfare schemes for the poor including a rural work guarantee program, and is now pressing for a massive expansion of food subsidies.

It wasn't clear why Mrs. Gandhi needed to travel overseas for medical treatment. Congress Party spokesman Manish Tewari would not comment beyond what Mr. Dwivedi said in his news conference.

Indian television channels buzzed with speculation on whether the party caretakers Mrs. Gandhi chose indicate who her favorite and most trusted lieutenants are. Party stalwarts including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P. Chidambaram weren't handed the reins. But political analyst Chintamani Mahapatra, professor at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, cautioned not to read too much into what he said was only a "temporary arrangement."

"Mrs. Gandhi appointed a core team to create a balance of leadership within the party," Mr. Mahapatra said. "No one should claim later that he is second in command in the party's hierarchy."

At various moments over the years, Congress party leaders have tried unsuccessfully to court Mrs. Gandhi to become prime minister. They did so in 1991 after her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated, but she wanted to stay out of politics. By the late 1990s she did enter politics and she became party leader in 1999 when Congress was in the opposition. When Congress swept to power in 2004, she was once again widely expected to take the prime minister post, but stepped aside for Manmohan Singh.

Mrs. Gandhi's linkages to India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty – her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, was prime minister for 15 years and was the daughter of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru – are a big part of her appeal to the masses. But her foreign origins have been the subject of great controversy, with opposition parties and even some within the Congress questioning whether she should hold so much sway over national affairs and be eligible to become prime minister.

So she knew that in India she won't be living in one piece. Decided to go to her side of the world eh, even though so many people from there come to India for medical tourism.

Here's the deal to USA: Help us get rid of her and her two mongrels and the MRCA contract is yours. :heh:

Most politicians travel to the US for medical treatment. May be they want to be away from media glare or something.

She is admitted in a Cancer center? What cancer needs surgery?

Only tumors need surgery and all tumors can be operated in India.

There are many Hospitals in New York offering best surgical care in the world, why did she pick this one?? The malady is undisclosed and initially reported as viral.

I wish her a speedy recovery from whatever it is. Modi prayed the same.

Like Yusuf said, many leaders travel overseas for treatments. They dont want media to cover some tragedy with any ordinary person on hospital gates due to their heavy security staff.

That's because she won't last long with the number of sick madness her party is doing in the country in the last 4-5 years. Knee-deep in trouble, she also found this as a perfect excuse to announce Rahul baba as the next PM candidate. Tch! Like that spoilt rich brat is going to ever be the PM.

Well actually imagine if she was admitted in some hospital in India, there will be a beeline of media OBVs outside the hospital. Catching any doctor or nurse they could find to get the latest update. Hundreds of "congresswalas" lining up the hospital and disrupting the entire medical treatment process of all other patients. Roads getting jammed etc.

The reporting would be funny as well.

Today Sonia Gandhi was given a diet of Dal and Rice. She vomited because the dal was very spicy.

Sonia went to the toilet 5 times today. She did not need any assistance for it.

Thats a good argument if her trips & treatments are financed by Indians. Otherwise its just a groundless shout.

You dont see American or European politicians comeing to India or going abroad for treatment in the name of privacy do you. When Bush got his colonoscopy and had a anal surgery for cancer he took it up in his own country like a man!

These are all poor excuses for being corrupt and haveing no faith in the land which she had to make sure gave such good treatment to its citizens. Even she does not trust her party to have done a good enough work in Health Care in this country and she has to leave for US. lol

A lot of us have wholesome meals everyday 3 times with good snack in between while millions go hungry.

We should give up on what we eat as well.

This is the exact reason why VIPs prefer solitude in such cases.

Well I remember MMS and ABV getting treated in Indian hospitals...media wasn't the issue then.

But foreign vs swadeshi, isn't my argument. What I feel is there is something rather serious (as Lethalforce was suggesting). Maybe cancer ?

I think more than the media it's the sycophants she is worried about. MMS doesn't have any such problems.
