‘Mysterious’ flying objects over Mumbai cause a scare

The objects were first sighted by a Jet Airways pilot, but disappeared after a few minutes
The Mumbai Police and several other security agencies on Monday held a meeting and shared information on four or five ‘mysterious’ objects spotted flying above airport two days ago.

Not only are such objects not allowed near the airport premises, the fact that they were moving against the direction of the wind has set off concerns that they were remote-controlled and could have been used for surveillance.

The alarm thus raised led the Prime Minister’s Office to direct all the agencies to carry out a thorough investigation.

As per laws laid down by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), paragliding, hot balloons, drones, sky lanterns or any other form of flying objects are strictly not allowed near airport premises.

The objects were first sighted by a Jet Airways pilot and disappeared after a few minutes.

Even though they did not confirm whether any leads had been obtained, senior Mumbai Police officers expressed the hope that they would soon unravel the mystery.

After the police had a meeting with representatives from Central Industrial Security Force, Air Traffic Control, Mumbai International Airport Limited and several other agencies, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti said the information that each one of these agencies had about the incident was exchanged and the collated information would be used to track down those behind the flying objects.

“We are hopeful that we will nail the mystery soon,” he claimed.

Asked whether a case had been registered, Mr. Bharti said that once the information is processed and those behind the flying objects are traced, a call would be taken.

Police sources suspect these objects to be lanterns which use heat generated from wax to move up. The radars installed to track aerial movements in and around Mumbai, including those used by defence forces, failed to pick them up.

Initial inquiries

This, said sources, could be because of their size and the altitude at which they were flying but raises questions about chinks in the defence shield. Initial inquiries also ruled out the possibility of the flying objects belonging to the Naval airbase.

It is also learnt that Military Intelligence is also carrying out a probe.

It seems like our surveillance is weak..... they have still not been able to identify what and who was flying in what is essentially a no fly zone.

IAF still puzzled by mysterious flying objects

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is yet to unearth any substantive evidence regarding the reported flight of five unidentified parachute-like objects that were said to have been spotted in Mumbai airspace on Saturday, sources said, adding that no video footage was available of the incident.

The IAF on Monday swung into action, trying to unearth evidence following media reports from Mumbai over the weekend. The civil aviation ministry also asked Air India to verify exactly what had happened. While there have been some still-photo shots that are yet to be authenticated, the absence of concrete video footage is proving a hurdle in establishing what had actually happened.

There were some media reports from Mumbai initially suggesting that the objects may have been remote-controlled parachutes since they were flying against the wind, with speculation also that the flying objects could have been sky-lanterns of Chinese make. But security agencies are also said to be looking into the matter since any unidentified flying objects could be used to carry bombs or other such explosive material. After the 9/11 attacks, threats from small aerial objects such as gliders —- that can be used for a terror attack —- have been a big challenge facing security agencies.

Meanwhile, on Monday, news agency reports from Mumbai said that according to the Mumbai police, five unidentified objects were spotted over the airport area on Saturday evening by the pilot of a private airline just before take-off.

He immediately alerted the Mumbai airport’s air traffic controller about the incident following which the authorities of the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) were also informed about the objects spotted over the airport. MIAL immediately alerted the airport police station. The matter has also been brought to the notice of Mumbai’s joint commissioner of police (law and order) but the police is yet to register a case since no complaint has been received, according to reports from Mumbai.

I have seen flying lanterns here but not in the airport zone. Drones do not look like these objects as far as i know but u never know if there is something beneath these parachute like objects.

Then how come they are moving against the wind?

Or, they were not moving against the wind.

The wind at a higher level might actually move counter to the wind at the lower level.

Remember Bikini Atoll. When they exploded the nuke, they measured the wind velocity, and expected the fallout to go in one direction. However, the wind velocity at a higher level was in the opposite direction. Long story short, the local population was exposed and had to be relocated.

It could be true.

Given the ways of the miscreants who used doves with sensors to gather intel , more of such sightings can be expected.
There should be methods to counter such threats..well every nation is suffering the drone of drones and talking about measures to fix it.

lawl .. weather balloons

Sources in the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) said the Indian Meteorological Department's airport bureau in Santacruz had set off balloons to collect weather data.

"The weather balloons travelled from the southwest owing to the current wind pattern. The flight paths match with the location where airport staff spotted the aerial objects," said a senior DGCA official requesting anonymity.

On Saturday evening, 5 small parachute-like objects were observed approaching from the southwest direction of the Mumbai airport moving towards northeast along with the wind.

on 1-2 portals, its being told that the 2 held belong to some diamond firm. nevertheless, looks like the balloons were for promotion-purposes.
