People welcome the caparisoned elephant Balarama, carrying Goddess Chamundeshwari inside the 'golden howdah' during the Dasara festival procession in Mysore, Karnataka. Mysore Dasara, a royal festival started by the Wodeyar kings, is the celebration of the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari over the demon Mahishasura. Celebrated in the months of September-October, the 10-day long festival culminates on Vijayadashmi.
