QUETTA: Jan Muhammad, 43, is now father to 35 children after the recent births of two more children. Jan Muhammad has three wives who have given him 21 daughters and 14 sons.

"My target is 100 children," he tells Dawn.com.

The family of 39 lives in a mud-brick house located in a poor neighbourhood of Quetta.

By profession, Jan Muhammad is a doctor and trader. "Thank God, I am able to manage the growing expenditures of my family," he said. "I spend about Rs100,000 a month on family expenditures," he said.

Two of his wives gave birth to two daughters last week. The middle-class family celebrated the arrival of the newborns.

"We, the girls have outnumbered the boys," Shagufta Nasreen, the elder daughter of Jan Muhammad tells Dawn.com, smiling.

She said the population of women in Pakistan was already very high and her family was contributing to the increase in the number of girls.

The ages of children range from one-week-old to almost 16-years-old.

Jan Muhammad's family lives happily despite its increasing size. He challenges the established perception that "less family members lead to a happy life".

"My aim is to educate my kids as well," he said.

Audiences were first introduced to Jan Muhammad's family on DawnNews.

A video of his family was watched by over 3.3 million people on Facebook, who shared it over 175,000 times and commented on it 4,000 times.

Whatever. But with time more and more population will secularize.
Through united nations fertility variant, India's population will be 1.74 billion in 2060 and will start decline.
It will be declined to 1.70 billion in 2070 and even 1.65 billion in 2100.
Meanwhile, paki population would only increase for next 150 years (observed from speed).
I was worried about economic edge but lost when came to know that our GDP per capita would be 10.2 times higher in nominal and 5-6 times in PPP.

I salute the giuy for putting his thesis into actual practice , he insists that a smaller family does not bring hapiness but rather a larger one ( something akin to that ) .....and from what i understand he is not doing it via govt expenses but rather on his own ?

it that's the case then i think the people and govt in india should consider his model of family relations

i had a different set of numbers fro a french study group ....china has already peaked and is already declining , india to peak at 2 billion round about end of century , Peskystan to peak at 500 million

in this article the graph shows pakstan as having a gradual growth rate along with a whole hos of others .....the same graph shows india's growth rate as slightly higher than that group and nigerias as being v much higher

nigeria is the one to watch , they may peak at well above 2 billion ?

and while peskystan is shown as being in the group with the others, perhaps , the figures may have been manipulated by their govt so as not to cause alarm ?

I don't know about Hindu's but Muslims definitely do this. This is a growing crisis in Sri Lanka

There is a simillar kind of man in India too who want to score a century. He also has like 3-4 wives; hmm I can't quite remember. Watched the news about 2-3 yrs ago. This Pak guy seems to increase girl's numbers in Pak by contributing small from his family. He is well rich too to support them. Contrast to him, his Indian counterpart is very very poor and he wants to make kids just for fun... That is sheer madness!!! One thing I will admit, this is sure a dumb way to increase girl population. Does not matter if you are rich enough.

Well, I guess you may not be knowing a rule.

Anyway, for population declination, here in India, effects are observable.
People do not marry even at age of 30-35(my big bro is example).
And who marry, they have only one and sometimes no children.

Though in terms of development, GDP per capita or HDI etc., we and our neighbors would be like US vs Mexico in next 20-30 years. Yet we would take at least 50 years to catch up with west.
Most near among richies is France. Even China will overtake them.

Does anyone here have any doubts about the prediction that these kids will grow up dirt poor with no education and then cite Hindu discrimination and Sachhar committee report, even 20 years later, as an excuse to why the muslim community is backward? Well as per govt stats analysis there were only some 20 districts in India with high population growth nos

For the rest the population growth nos are already coming down and approaching the replacement ratio which I think is 2.1

Which means the parents (2 nos) have 2.1 children - the 2 children will replace the 2 parents and the .1 will take care of child births, child death during childhood etc etc

Coming back to the topic at hand

Well what can you say
There will always be done crackpot like him on different issues

But for the general population at large economics dictate the size of the family - which is a reality

For the very poor - more children means more income earners - more hands to work

For the middle class the cost of living brings in a realisation that lower no of children is better

And on a different note the population predictions for China - a genuine question when were they published

Before the China's one child policy reversal ? - if yes those needs to be revisited

The government also bears a lot of responsibility in the social engineering that has gone into segment. If socialist doles and schemes continue to incentivize manual labor and people see that their decision to bear more children does indeed yield dividends, then they have a vested interest in continuing the status quo of having more children and this results in a vicious cycle of overpopulation, hunger games, and politics of 'socialist' vote banks. In that sense the government is to blame for incentivizing the status quo.

The government should have a long term plan to slowly wean people away from the dole by increasing the cost of living gradually so that people find that it's costly to have more kids. If they keep decreasing the cost of living by giving subsidies and free doles, then the population will never decrease. Incidentally, successive governments have deliberately kept these doles active so that they could create a large population which is dependent on the government in power for their survival. The Congress had cleverly intertwined the survival of poor people with the survival of their party, by schemes like NREGA.
