Is there a problem of torque in a quad copter? Also isnt UMS in coimbatore into such stuff as well?
Yes GK, if all props rotate in the same direction, we have the same issue as in a regular copter. The Quad will want to spin about its centre of mass. Hence counter rotating props, they cancel out each others torque. Dont know about UMS, but building a quad is simple, many people have and still build quad/multi copters. But most use off the shelf control systems.

Utk, I dont have a video camera man. I just have a small kodak point and shoot camera. I think it has a video option. Will check and see if I can record the build. You really hate reading, right. Its videos or nothing. :p

Where did you buy all those control system boards, motors and Carbon fiber rod? Is it an kit?

Check out UMS web site on aero modeling..i also wanted to do all this aero modeling stuff...Ru an engg or something?

No kit. Carbon Fiber tubes are available to order from various sources. I bought mine from a place called protech composites. I'm in the US so these things are more easily accessible than in India. But CF tubes should be available from international shippers on ebay. Motors I won in an ebay auction. I got a lot of 9 brushless EDF motors for 40 USD, it was a steal as each is valued at $20.

Control system, I have not yet ordered but it is avaiable off the shelf. I still have to place an order for it.

There are quadcopter kits available, but the cheap ones are made of flimsy material and the expensive ones are ... ahem, expensive.

UMS technologies website looks really cool. I might become a customer when I am back in India. Really nice stuff.

Ramjet sounds cool. I absolutely adore Coimbatore and the resourcefulness of the people there. I used to race often at Karivardhan. Man, the enthu of the Combi boys - just amazing.

Before Ramjet, one thing you can try as a DIY is a pulsejet engine. You can make it with a 2 stroke chamber design. Its simple and super cool. Look at these crazy fkrs playing with pulsejets http://aardvark.co.nz/pjet/

I work in New York. Boring job, not worth talking about. Just raising enough capital to play with my toys after an early retirement.

@tiranga : Multicopters are common with many hobbyists man ... Nothing very special or difficult in making one. However I do have some connection with ISRO. I did a part of my project thesis in Master Control facility in Hassan. ISRO guys are cool and do some crazy shit.

Hey trackwhack...did not get the time to check this thread before....and i am happy with the progress...actually I should pinch (same pinch) you....I thought i would build a quad copter myself at this time of the year, hence the collection of links and the online research....

Your build will be an inspiration, as i am not from the tech background so not clue about the parts required and other important issues associated with the build.....please complete the build as early as possible, so that i can start mine.:becky:

glad I was able to help you out

@GK do you know if these parts are locally available at a cheap rate.

@Hussain, thanks for the links, very helpful indeed. Building my own control board looks like a very complicated process indeed. I looked at the Microsoft Robotics software but realized that teaching an old dog new tricks is not easy . I will stick with PIC or Atmega micro controllers as I have a teeny bit of experience with these. Also the boards out there in the market use a similar approach. However as soon as I look at adding functionality like GPS and FPV, I will have to look at more capable systems. But I want to first get this thing of the ground. Anyway to cut a long story short, I dont want to wait a year before flying this as thats how long it will take for me to build the control board. So in the meantime, I will buy an off the shelf controller and check it out. Here is the controller.
ArduPilot Mega - Arduino Compatible \UAV Controller w/ ATMega2560
(can be programmed using Arduino Software of LabVIEW, whichever you prefer ...or any other environment)

Designed to be used with autonomous aircraft, quadcopters and helis
Based on a 16MHz Atmega2560 processor.
Built-in hardware failsafe that uses a separate circuit (multiplexer chip and ATMega328 processor) to transfer control from the RC system to the autopilot and back again.
Includes ability to reboot the main processor in mid-flight
Dual-processor design with 32 MIPS of onboard power
Supports 3D waypoints and mission commands (limited only by memory--approximately 600-700 waypoints with current code, but can be adapted for more)
256k Flash Program Memory, 8K SRAM, 4K EEPROM
Comes with a 6-pin GPS connector (EM406 style).
Has 16 spare analog inputs (with ADC on each) and 40 digital input/outputs to add additional sensors
Four dedicated serial ports for two-way telemetry (using optional XBee modules) and expansion
Can be powered by either the RC receiver or a separate battery
Hardware-driven servo control, which means less processor overhead, tighter response and no jitters
Eight RC channels (including the autopilot on/off channel) can be processed by the autopilot.
LEDs for power, failsafe status, autopilot status

You can Buy it from here ..it just costs $64.00 ..https://store.diydrones.com/productdetails_popup.asp?productcode=BR-ArduPilot-01

You can plan your mission using APM Mission Planner ..

Good project, hope you will put remote camera when it will fly, best of luck.
Pretty Easy ..Mount your Android Phone on this Quad-Rotor and Stream the video using IP Cam (Android Application) over WiFi ..!!

or you could use this..!

a wireless security cam, i wonder if the range would be good enough, it definitely looks small enough to be carried.

if we ripe of the plastic cladding and lose the metal screws we could cut weight as well.

However i wonder if the range can be extended by playing with the frequency or something?

iPhone App Can Fly Unmanned Aircraft - Government - Security - Informationweek

iPhone App Can Fly Unmanned Aircraft

Researchers from Boeing and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a prototype application that allows someone to fly a miniature unmanned aircraft from an iPhone.
Eventually, the technology may be applied to remotely control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as drones used by the U.S. military in combat and reconnaissance missions.

Boeing Research & Technology and student researchers at MIT's Humans and Automation Lab have successfully tested an iPhone application that uses the device's touch interface to navigate a mini-UAV from across the country as part of a Boeing project called Micro Aerial Vehicle Visualization of Unexplored Environments, or MAV-VUE, according to Boeing.

An engineer from the aerospace company, George Windsor, successfully flew the UAV above a baseball field on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Mass., via an iPhone in the company's Seattle office. The application is part of Boeing's efforts to team with industry and education partners to develop better and easier ways to control UAVs, among other technological innovations.
Boeing said the benefits of remote control of mini-drones via an iPhone or another smartphone are that the applications can be used to control UAVs for dirty or dangerous tasks, or during long missions that would be tedious for a human at the controls of an aircraft.
Joshua Downs, a human factors specialist with Boeing Research & Technology and the Boeing technical leader of the MAV-VUE project, in a statement described use-case scenarios for the application.
One envisioned a soldier using a mobile app-controlled, lightweight UAV for a better view of a battlefield, and another proposed scenarios in which firefighters or rescue workers can use UAVs to quickly and efficiently get a better view of disaster areas.
The federal government--the military in particular--has been exploring innovative ways to use mobile applications on iPhones and Android-based devices in various combat and reconnaissance scenarios.
One program, Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications, gives soldiers in the field mobile devices loaded with custom applications that will be helpful in combat, while another called Relevant ISR to the Edge sends real-time intelligence information to soldier handheld devices during a military mission.
