Protest in Mumbai turns violent; RR Patil speaks for peace

A meeting held at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai to protest the recent attacks in Assam and Myanmar turned violent on Saturday with groups attacking media persons as well as the police. Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Azad Maidan Ground in south Mumbai this afternoon following a call by a city-based organisation Raza Academy to denounce the violence in Assam.

The ground is located near Mumbai civic body headquarters and CST Mumbai railway station.

Protesters turned violent at around 3:30pm attacking an outdoor broadcast van of media channels, and torching a police vehicle.

The protesters then entered the CST Railway terminus and damaged window panes. While the protesters had permission to gather at Azad Maidan, the group took the protest to the streets.

According to the police, the violence has ended now and the protesters have dispersed.

Earlier, sporting black badges, hundreds of members and activists of these organisations, converged at the Azad Maidan and expressed concern over the massacre of the Muslim community.

Maulana Syed Moinuddin Ashraf, president of Jamia Qadriya Ashrafiya, urged the Central and state governments to intervene.

'It is the responsibility of the Congress government to protect the Muslims, and for that matter each and every citizen,' said the Maulana, who is also known as Moin Miyan.

'With regards to the massacre in Myanmar, we understand it is an external problem and that certainly should be taken care of, but what is happening in Assam reflects on the state of affairs of the country,' he added.

'A large number of Muslims have been rendered homeless and are now living in camps,' said Raza Academy chairman Saeed Noorie.

Noorie said they have already written to the government of Myanmar, the United Nations, the International Human Rights Organisation, Organisation of Islamic Countries, President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to highlight the massacre of Muslims in Myanmar.

After the protest in Mumbai turned violent, Maharashtra home minister RR Patil has appealed for peace.

The minister has appealed to people to maintain calm, he said. He reviewed the situation with senior officials, the spokesperson added.

Who have condemned them so far? Requests for restraints notwithstanding.

And who have tried to justify them?

Is it? do u kno dat there were more of muslims in the freedom struggle of india than non muslims? pple like u create biasness and hetered among the masses. indian muslims are equally patriot as others are.

shud i say d same wen sikhs protested against killing of sikhs in US
Sikh protest against US killings didnt turned violent. They didn't burned Indian property.Therein lies the difference.
Constitution gives us the right to protest. You have the right to start a protest on any issue. But you dont have the right to create anarchy.

So many Shias have been killed in Pakistan in last few years. How many of your people have led a protest against that?

Sikhs protested because those killed were Indians or of Indian descent. Are Rohingyas of Indian descent ? Even then, compare how the two communities protested..in complete contrast.

Not to forget, Few of the American Sikhs were Indians. Indian Muslims were on rampage and started violence for Rohingyas and Bangladeshi Muslims. What Indian Muslims has to do with Myanmar Muslims ? If one goes with his logic, There should be large-scale violence everyday in India as Hindus are facing genocide in Pak for last 65 years.

Also, Hardly few dozen participated in the Sikh protest which was peaceful and here 50,000+ Muslims participated and Mumbai and Ranchi witnessed large scale violence in last 36 hours.

Just a trailor for times to come......media is still not reporting fully as they are not blaming Islamic people openly as they do in the case of Hindus! Wait and watch as Islamic population increases in India and they remain medieval and bigoted, these incidents will become common! Two result may turn out:

1) Hindus become more secular (i.e coward, timid and surrender to the will of islam) and accept their own killings, bombings, looting, plundering and their women getting rapped - as part of their daily life (similar to Hindus of pakistan)!

or

2)Tame abrahmical minorities with an Iron Fist and send them packing if they utter abrahmical nonsense ever!

EDIT : The two killed are members of the Reza academy. Good riddance.

These Policemen are so quick in pulling the trigger when the protesters are poor farmers fighting to protect their land from the mafia. But what did they do here? Fired in Air? Are you kidding me?

If the police give permission for that protest even after what happened today, they must be the biggest fools.

Tension on Ranchi streets

State capital Ranchi on Friday witnessed some action when a mob ran amok wielding lathis and iron rods, vandalizing and ransacking shops, damaging vehicles and assaulting commuters.

In no time the mob virtually took siege to the entire Main from Albert EkkaChowk to SujataChowk, spreading fears of riots in the city. The mob belonging to the minority group was protesting against the killing of Muslims in Myanmar.
