BEIJING: Hundreds of Muslims fought with armed police who demolished a mosque in north China, local police and a human rights group said on Monday, with several people injured in the “riot”.

The violence between local Muslims and roughly 1,000 armed police began after police declared illegal a newly renovated mosque in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and moved to destroy it, the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, in Hong Kong, said.

The Hui are one of several Muslim minority groups in China.

Two people were killed and 50 injured after police fired tear gas and used knives and batons to beat back ethnic Hui Muslim protesters in Taoshan village, Hexi township, the rights group said, citing villagers.

Hexi township police denied any deaths when reached by telephone.

A policeman surnamed Ma confirmed that the mosque was torn down. He told AFP a “riot” occurred in Hexi on Saturday afternoon.

“Two police officers and two villagers got injured and several villagers were taken away by the police, but I don’t know how many,” Ma said.

One Taoshan local who was away when the violence occurred, said his relatives had told him over the telephone that on December 30 an official had shouted “(the mosque) is illegal” and ordered the armed police to tear it down.

“Clashes happened and more than 100 people went missing,” Jin Haitao told AFP. He said many villagers’ injuries were caused by police using high-pressure water cannon to disperse those trying to stop destruction of the mosque.

“Now, I can’t reach anyone there,” Jin said, speaking from north China’s Hebei province near Beijing.

The Hong Kong-based rights group said in a fax that Muslims from Ningxia and the neighbouring province of Gansu had donated money to build the mosque.

Jin said it was first built in 1987 and refurbished last year.

China’s communist government monitors religious activity closely and must approve the building of all mosques, churches and other places of worship as a way to prevent their becoming centres for anti-government organising.

China in recent years has seen several outbreaks of ethnic violence involving Muslims, mostly as the mainly Muslim Uighurs of the northwest Xinjiang region bridle under what they regard as government oppression and the unwanted immigration of majority ethnic Han Chinese.

Spare a thought to those poor Pakistanis!

Previously they had to disown the Uighurs... now they will have to disown Huis as well.

    The Ummah is in threat!

China killing it's ethnic muslim minority and destroying their mosques...
    .
So what is ALL-WEATHER friend of China and thekedaar of Islam aka Pakistan is gonna do here? Options are:-
    .
    1. Lodge a protest by raising the issue in UN the same way it rants for Kashmir.

    OR

    2. Shut it's mouth and let China do what it want to do with it's muslim minority and thus proving it's heart beats only for muslims in Kashmir and not for opressed Chinese muslim who are getting slaughtered more and more. Thus proving its double standards.

It is surprising that the Hui are up in arms.

They had been Sinicized long back and are very docile and obedient.

However, one cannot blame the Chinese Govt if they want to destroy some construction that is not sanctioned and authorised, no matter if it is a place of worship.

What is most worrisome is that since the Huis have been well integrated into the Chinese system and are docile, this type of serious trouble is indicative that the reach of the Wahhabis is deep and far.

One can understand the rebellion of the Uighurs, but this riot by the Huis is inexplicable.

China must take care regarding the Wahhabi influence spreading into China via Muslim travellers or Mullahs and the insurgents trained in Pakistan amdrassas and terrorist camps.

Compared to the Uighurs, they are docile and they have become Hans in all respects including culture and language.

The Huis are taken as Hans since they are not classified under the minorities unlike the Uyghurs, Dongxiang, or Tajiks.

If the were hard core Muslims then how come in 1936, after Sheng Shicai expelled 20,000 Kazakhs from Xinjiang to Qinghai, the Hui led by General Ma Bufang massacred their fellow Muslims, the Kazakhs, until there were 135 of them left?

Well, Ray, you are wrong here:

Hui was the groups of Han who adopted Muslim in history. They were han from the beginning.

Messiah, this is one of main reason India is undevoloped. People like you are simply racist and never care about language you use. You must use water from toilet after u dump to brush your teeth and rinse your mouse.
None of Chinese member here in this forum ever use language like "chini". Chinese is actually more appropriate.

I have mentioned in another post, Chini (unlike Chink) is not a derogatory word, and is the historical term for Chinese people.

    ----

Chinese are called Chinis in Hindi/Sanskrit

China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    China=चीन= Cheen, people from चीन = Chini

The word "chinna" means "tiny" in Telugu, in case anyone is interested.

It has no relation to China or Chinese though (AFAIK).
