Part of a bridge being built for the Mumbai Metro has collapsed, killing at least one person and injuring a number of others, officials say.

The incident took place in the Marol area of the suburb of Andheri in India's financial capital.

Reports said workers were trying to install a huge slab on the bridge when it fell to the ground.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but officials say heavy rains could be behind the accident.

Work on the Mumbai Metro railway started in 2006 and the project is due to be completed in 2021.

The first phase of the Metro is due to open next year.
