Mumbai MBA Graduate Denied Job By Diamond Firm For Being A Muslim

HuffPost India | By Rituparna Chatterjee

    Posted: 21/05/2015 15:01 IST Updated: 21/05/2015 15:03 IST

MUMBAI — When Zeshan Ali Khan graduated last week, he and a couple of his friends decided to apply for a job at Mumbai's Hare Krishna Exports Pvt Ltd, a leading diamond export firm.

But to his utter disbelief Khan claimed he received a letter from the company stating that it does not hire Muslims. The exact reply read: "Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Muslim candidates."

"I completed my MBA a week ago and then applied for a job at Harikrishna Exports Private limited. I had applied along with two other friends, their applications were accepted but mine wasn't," Khan told ANI.

"I took a screenshot of the email and posted it on social media. It has gone viral. The minorities commission has sent a notice to the company. I'd only like to say, please don't discriminate candidates on the basis of religion," Khan said.

PTI reported that the National Commission for Minorities has said it will conduct an inquiry if there is any truth in the matter.

"At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting foreign countries and inviting them for investment and pushing ahead the 'Make in India' campaign, the leading export houses are rejecting candidates for their religion," Khan said.

After his post on Facebook went viral, the company reportedly sent him another mail "regretting" the incident and placing the blame squarely on a trainee in the HR team, the PTI report said.

"It was a blunder and personal mess created by one of our trainees who has no decision making power. We have 61 employees in our office here including one Muslim in the HR team," Hari Krishna Exports Private Ltd said in the mail.

As the controversy snowballed, the Associate VP & Head of HR of the company, Mahendra Deshmukh, wrote to Khan saying: “We would like to clarify that the company does not discriminate against candidates based on gender, caste, religion, etc. Any hurt caused in the matter is deeply regretted.”

"We just received a petition this morning and as per our set procedure we will call for the comments of the respondent company and based on their response we will decide their course of action. If there is any truth in this, it is unfortunate. An inquiry should be conducted," NCM chairperson Naseem Ahmed said.

Reacting to the controversy, Minister of state for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "A person's caste, area or religion cannot be a demerit.

"Discrimination on the basis of religion is neither allowed by our Constitution, nor by our administration. If there has been case in which he (Zeshan) was denied or fired from the job only on the basis of his religion, then I feel its not right," he said.

FIR should be filed against the company.

What's wrong with what the company did again? So private companies should have no right to choose who they employ? This is a different matter if it is a govt company.

Media never screamed all this while, now suddenly?

Besides the company has already written back to him saying it was a mistake:

So, you are saying that a private company should have the right to decline a job to an aspirant because he is SC/CT/OBC?

Two wrongs cannot make it right. However the Government needs to address this issue immediately.

Lesser said about the antics of the main stream media the better.

Yes. But what I am saying is not limited to caste. It applies to anything. Who someone hires for his "private" company is completely his freedom and right.

Muslims have been doing this for a long time now so are the Christians and to some extend Hindus, albeit covertly. So long it is private sector no one has any right to scream foul play. And Muslims crying foul here just reeks of hypocrisy. Seriously are all the apologists here going to claim that they have never seen muslim firms hiring Muslims or xtian firms hiring xtians

You are not an Indian. So whether you hate yourself or not means shit to us. Go comment on your PM and your race' practices now and leave us Indians to our own.

A person's skills relevant to his job should be the barometer for deciding whether he should be hired or not.

Unless you are hiring someone to perform puja or nikah, or any religious ceremony, I don't see why religion has to come into the picture.

However, your point is not hypocritical. It might just not be the right way to move forward.

You should really consider joining Indian National Congress or maybe Indian Express.

Is there any reason to believe Modi had anything to do with this incident?

And only the "hirer" has the right to decide who he thinks has the best skills for the job he is hiring for. And if being affiliated to a particular religion is part of the skill requirement as "required/thought to be required " by the hirer, no one has any right go poke their nose into it.

That said, the only right the people who find this offensive/wrong can do is boycotting such companies which is within their rights. Muslims can boycott the companies which they feel discriminate them. No reason to involve govt here.

You should not take him seriously. He is a typical identity crisised on and off NRI/PIO, who assumes Indian identity and discards it when convenient for either

No the Govt. cannot regulate how to hire in private firms ( till date) but that does not mean that you discriminate on the basis on Caste or religion or race.
