why doesn't the indian army replace the existing concepts of strike corps and holding corps and instead transforms all the corps into chinese style group armies constisting of 50-60k soldier each and composed of an intergrated mobile combination of armour, infantry, artillery, mbrl, strike helicopters, uavs air defence(both gun based and sam) working in a networked environment and suited to operate in any king of terrain?

There are lots of strategic reasons, but the most practical reason is that India does not have $200bn+ defence budget like China.

May be not now but ten years from now we will have a military budget of about $200 bn annualy.working towards a concept and implementing it on to ground should take about 10-15 years-so we need to plan for the future. In India the problem is there is no national security policy and everyone in the government and opposition speaks in different voices. The recommendation of kargil review commitee hasn't been implemented yet and regarding military and national security matters the government always follows a pacifier approach and opinions of military chiefs are rarely given importance. This has to change if India were to emerge as a world power with a strong anti terrorism approach.

Re: New strike corps in the Indian North East

OK , i searched the Net, this is the best i could get.....(This is all the vision of General Sundarji way back in 1986!)

Strike Corps in India and Pakistan have:

>1 x Armoured Division (the nucleus, around which Strike Corps is built)
> 2 x Infantry Division
> Artillery Assets
> Engineer Assets
> Air Defence Assets

Arty Divisions (like 40th with 2nd Corps) are additional
RAPID Divisions with one Mechanised Brigade (Tank + BMP) are additional.

For MSC, there will be less of Armour, probably replaced by Air Assault Division.

Air Assault Division will have (probably inspired by USA's 101 Airborne)
> integral Artillery (here 145 ULH Howitzers may be put to use, to replace 105mm weapons already available)
> Integral Helicopter Component (Light for troops / Heavy for Arty )
> Special Forces Component

So MSC ORBAT might be:

> 1 x Air Assault Division (Integral Artillery + Helicopters)
> 2 x Infantry / Mountain Division
> Engineer assets
> Artillery assets
> Anti Aircraft assets

Additional RAMID Divisions as required (maybe Armour replaced by Helicopter?)
RAMID Orbat (guesswork)
> 2 x Mountain brigades
> 1 x Air Assault with Integral Helicopters
> Arty Assets
> Engineer Assets
> Air Defence Assets

Attack Helicopters will be part of MSC

Wat is ORBAT for Strike Corps in IA, compared to holding corps?

      • 3 Batteries of 3 gun sections each

I believe that:-

  • Army Aviation and Air Defence assets will be attached to other units depending on operational need.
  • Further Heavy lift helicopters (Chinooks) will be provided in specific cases by the Army Commander (Since Heavy lift helicopters will be Command Assets or under Air-Force control)
  • Independent Mountain Infantry Regiments are being held as reserves for contingencies.
  • Independent Armoured Brigades are primarily meant for certain areas like the Depsang Plains.
I request all members to contribute towards improving this estimation of the ORBAT of 17 Corps.

Edit: Requesting conformation of Army Aviation squadron size. Are we sure its 10 helis? My source is this:-

Couldn't we include some apache for attack helicopters in addition to 10 LCH. Further what would be the standard issue battle rifles for those infantry soldiers? I would love it to be an Indian made one like 7.62×51 mk 1 c or mciws/advance assault rifle.

AFAIK, Apache will be used for CAS of Strike formations. LCH specializes in High Altitude warfare, the reason why it was built. My guess is that each Strike Corps (I, II and XXI) will get an Apache squadron each, whereas other Pivot Corps and Mountain Strike Corps will get LCH. And if the 22 Apache that IAF ordered are ever transferred to the Army, I hope those Apache end up on the 4 LHD vessels to support an Indian Army Marine Strike Corps.

The only confusion I have is on the squadron size. 10 helis making a squadron does not sound right.

About the assault rifle, I think its going to be the same as whatever the next standard issue rifle the Indian Army selects. I hope they go for the OFB 7.62X51mm.
