CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has introduced a new moral code of conduct on campus, prompting protests by students who believe that the authorities are playing spoilsport. The code seeks to put curbs on the annual 'hostel night', when students are allowed to bring in friends and make merry without the prying warden around.

Among the rules that the students were notified about is: "You should keep your door open when guests are inside on hostel night." It is a once-a-year custom in all IITs when students are allowed to bring guests to their rooms.

When the students protested, IIT-M called a general body meeting on March 26, which turned out to be a stage for hot arguments and moralizing by many faculty members.

At the meeting, a senior faculty member referred to the disagreement over the new open-door rule. "What do you want to do in that private space?" he asked a student who said hostel day should provide some private space. The student answered, "I want to talk to my friends," sending the audience into splits. The faculty member replied, "Students should behave as if their parents are with them."

Probably unaware of the Supreme Court observation that it is not a crime for a man and a woman to live together without being married, a senior professor, who represents the hostel wardens, said premarital relationships were not allowed under Indian laws. So, he said, the doors should remain open, and celebrations should end at 10.30pm.

Students are upset over IIT-M move to put curbs on hostel night celebrations. A student commented: "I forgot we are adults and mature enough to decide on sex and relationships." A final-year student said it is unfortunate that an institution which stood for progressive thoughts was getting involved in moral policing.

Dean L S Ganesh said the new rules were not to curb the students' freedom, but to maintain order.

"Relationships are individual choice and I don't believe that premarital relationships are an offence. The statement by the professor was made in a different context," he said.

Another new low. Professor, you work is to impart quality education, not interfere in the bedroom of students. Just because you did not get a pu$$y in your college days does not mean times have not changed. Get along time.

The late night hostel celebrations in the IITs should be banned coz 100s of thousands of their brothers and sisters studying and living in ordinary college hostel doesnt have this luxury...so why should they have the only fun???only b'coz they had scored better than 99% of the rest of india?

It is an annual event, for God sake, and what happens inside a students bedroom is none of the professor's business. I totally second Oracle.

Looks like the RSS wallahs have started haunting IITs as well!

This does not happen only in IIT-M, it happens in so many places in Chennai because of some conservative idiots, that is why no one wants to live in Chennai before marriage!!

Dude, this is not the point. In my college, a guy committed suicide during vacations. After vacations, only his bones were found, and some flesh in decomposed state.

These guys work very hard, they sure have a right to celebrate. And who the hell are the professors to take attendance of who their guests are and what they do inside their room.

Before these professors are allowed to teach in IITs, someone should teach them to respect the privacy of their students, at least one frigging day in the year!

RSS has nothing to do with that...

Engineering colleges in TN are very very strict in these stuff..

Many (most) engineering colleges in TN dont even allow girls to wear jeans...only salwar or saris....and for boys some colleges enforce formal attire, yes , formal attire. Not even casuals.

Less said about hostel rules the better.

But that is how it is.

I say, start from the High School level. Students should interview teachers and give out selection letters. I almost failed in Physics because of a Professor, who was more interested in tuition money, then actually teaching. He was a Gold medalist, but he did not have the zeal to teach. Indians give their career on a platter to these Professors, and all they are interested in are what students do inside the bedroom & tuition fees. Teaching is no longer the noble profession it was.

I know. In fact, girls should be allowed to wear more cosmopolitan clothes, at least in Chennai. In smaller towns, I understand.

IITs are not the bastion for liberal thought. Infact they are extremely strict compared to many other colleges
