India's frontrunner for prime minister Narendra Modi has pledged to speed up corruption-hit defense procurement if he comes to power to ensure the country's military is better prepared for battle, AFP reports. As the nation's general election enters its final stretch, Modi said timely, cost-effective and corruption-free purchase of defense weapons and other equipment was critical for the military.

More important issue is to first clearly delineate ..who are India's enemies? Pakistan certainly comes to mind as it has a history of being used by West to
control and contain India in last 60 years. So, firstly, the weapon systems must be designed to make sure that Paki does not dare to offer itself for use again against India by West or China. Once Paki is seen as a liability and not of much use...Anti-India powers will desist from using this troubled country.
Secondly, India needs ICBMs..such as AGNI-6 (Russia has Topol-M,China had DF31) so if some "superpower" miscalculates and wages a war, a few of AGNI-6 will bring an abrupt end to such an attack. Once other nations are convinced of mutually assured destruction..only then PEACE will prevail in the World. There is no need to fear any nation..times have changed...Nobody can win WW-3.
World has been turned into jungle in last 10 years and only, rules of jungle apply now. Gandhi does not work in today's world where all big powers are proudly displaying their killing machines and human lives have been cheapened by
war-mongers and regime changers.

India has no enemies.

It has two adversaries.

While indeed there is a need for strategic weapons, finance will have to be first refurbished by organising a better economy.

The more important task would be first to upgrade and add to the conventional weaponry, as also replace the obsolescent weapon platforms and weapons.

Corruption in defence purchases can be controlled if there is a clear cut policy and political will to do so. The main issue is that the bureaucracy is to be controlled.

Thereby leaving us with no suppliers as well.

Those countries expecting big ticket sales to India should be made to understand that their sales to our adversaries should be of inferior technology and capability if they want to do business with India. Period.

Agree.

The bureaucracy has to be controlled and also made accountable for their actions. We talk about loss of resources due to corruption but this is peanuts compared to the losses acrued due to escalations caused by delays because of inept handling of affairs by the bureaucracy.

Also, random blacklisting has to stop. We end up with equipment we would otherwise not wish to procure.

As long as these Americans and Chineses still need to contain indian influence in south asia, Pakistan is always the cheapest weapon to do that.

Well, my friend, the fact is that Chinese is never able to win WW3 because they never had enough number even they put DF41 in the stock.Unless your gov decieds to bankcrupt itself in order to build thousands of so called AGNI-6, you will never be able to scare anyone with your nuclear weapons.

Oh, no! The world has always been in this mud since beginning. India public may not realise it but your gov has been playing this game from 1947. And I would say they played quite good.

No Smoking....what are you smoking? You still have a fantasy that any major nation can WIN WW-3. Neither West, Russia,China or India can win WW-3
even with current nuclear arsenals each of these nations have. WW-3 will lead to complete destruction of world economy, millions of people will die and hundreds of million will suffer from radioactivity induced cancers and other diseases. Forget about winning.. don't be insane...This language of dominating others and winning is language of past. No smoking.....a dozen AGNI-5 on Shangai will be enough to bring you to your senses... Think about mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. Dream of multi-polar world..that's the only good dream...rest are just nightmares.
