Modi: Gujarat malnutrition a middle-class phenomenon - Hindustan Times

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi sees not just Gujarat's high-profile growth but, ironically, even its malnutrition as a sign of prosperity.

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Modi offered this explanation on why malnutrition level in the state - otherwise seen as an
economic powerhouse - was persistently high.

"Gujarat is …a middle-class state. The middle-class is more beauty conscious than health conscious - that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they have a fight. She'll tell her mother, 'I won't drink milk. I'll get fat'." He then added: "We'll try to get a drastic change in this. Gujarat is going to come up as a model in this also."

He gave another reason too: Gujarat's vegetarianism.

This candid claim about malnutrition being a middle-class phenomenon came amid other familiar claims: that Gujarat is the engine of growth; that it shone as a "flicker of light" when there were massive power blackouts in July.

He even made it clear that to pick up from negligible growth was easy - many may see this as a veiled barb at Nitish Kumar's Bihar - but to sustain high growth was difficult. "Going from 1% or 2% growth to 10% isn't difficult. What is difficult is to sustain 10%."

Modi brushed aside a question whether he saw himself as a future PM, saying he didn't carry the burden of the "madness of future".

He also reiterated that he wasn't guilty of wrongdoing in the 2002 Gujarat riots. He added that if he was, he should be punished rather than just being asked to seek forgiveness.

"One only has to ask for forgiveness if one is guilty of a crime. If you think it's such a big crime, why should the culprit be forgiven," Modi said. "….The world should know there isn't any tolerance for these kinds of political leaders."

Agree about the vegetarianism and sustaining growth. Gujarat probably has larger number of vegetarians than any other state in India. Also, that may be one reason state like WB with more poverty may be showing less malnutrition.

Jainism, Swaminarayan Sampraday, Vaishnav are having a great foothold here. And I fully support them.
You won't see non-veg shops here and there. They have specific places.Btw, they remain full that's the different talk.... ;) Infact, educated and not polarized muslims here also don't eat non-veg frequently. They eat only on some occassions.

So only the polarized and uneducated Muslims like to eat meat. The more educated you get as a Muslim, the less polarized you get and eventually the less meat you eat. Amazing.

Indians are generally anaemic due to high proportion of wheat in the diet. Lots of adults have low levels of Vitamin D and thus are calcium deficient again due to consumption of wheat. I should say as a society we must consume multi vitamins regularly and also take iron supplements. Give multi vitamins to kiddies. They will grow more healthy long term.

What Modi is saying is not wrong. Perhaps he has generalised it. But then what I wrote above is applicable to 95% of Indians.

    1. Lets admit, this was a foot in mouth comment. Even if there was intention to link vegetarians with malnutrition, connecting it with teenage girl's anorexia was in bad taste.
    2. Is there is any link of malnutrition with vegetarians? I highly doubt. General comments won't do, lets see some links which shows such studies.

Indians are deficient in Vit D, although we do stay in the sun and drink milk. Probably it has been an evolutionary response to over-exposure to sun.

Many Indians are actually gluten and lactose intolerant, numbers increase as you go down from North to South.

Instead of multi-vitamins, if you know a knowledgeable Ayurvedic Acharya ask him to prescribe you "bhashmas" they are more readily absorbed and less toxic.

I agree. However, due to overt pollution many ayurvedic drugs could be very damaging to the body in general.

It wasn't a logic genius. They don't eat because you can't find meat openly here.

While polarized muslims have open meat shop in their areas.

I remember reading a passage attributed/written by Swami Vivekananda; west bengal had greater cases of malnutrition(?), dyspepsia etc as compared to east bengal, and the reasoning he said was that east bengalis being largely muslim ate more meat.

1. He must be making sarcastic comment to tell the truth as he does it always. And it's not an offensive comment, should be ignored but not the point.

2. And of course vegi people never get full nutrition like non-vegi gets. Egg is considered as reference protein. Plus meat/pork/fish contain a lot of vitamins, fat, protein, etc which can make you much healthier than a vegi.Vegi people eat wheat a lot which doesn't contain essential elements.Sabzi which we eat are not sufficient to fulfill our needs.1 benefit is vegi has high fiber diet which has no nutritive value.

Nearly one third of Australian adults are suffering vitamin D deficiency according to a study involving more than 11,000 adults from around the country. :scared2:

This is the first national study to evaluate the vitamin D status of Australians. Those at greatest risk for deficiency were women, the elderly, the obese, people doing less than 2.5 hours of physical activity a week, and people of non- European background.

The results highlight vitamin D deficiency as a major public health issue for Australia that requires urgent attention, said study leader Professor Robin Daly, Chair of Exercise and Ageing within the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research at Deakin University, and honorary fellow in the Department of Medicine (Northwest Academic Centre) at the University of Melbourne.

“Vitamin D deficiency is emerging as a major health problem worldwide. It is clear from the results of our study that, despite an abundance of vitamin D rich sunlight, Australians are not immune from this issue,” he said.....

I know you are a doctor so I wont contest your claim. However, when you state,'1 benefit is vegi has high fiber diet which has no nutritive value.' Its wrong. Without fibre you will be constipated and that will lead to reduced absorption of nutrients in the intestine. Its very common in the west for doctors to recommend a high fibre diet for those who eat massive quantity of meat. Fibre also reduces abdominal cancer. Also it has nutritive value, just lesser than meat
