Modi gives Smriti big job, Cong takes a cheap shot

The issue of Smriti Irani's educational qualifications was raked up by Congress leader Ajay Maken.

In an indication of the rising stature of Smriti Irani within the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday allocated to her — the youngest in his Council of Ministers — the crucial portfolio of HRD.

Taking potshots at the move, Congress general secretary and head of its communication department Ajay Maken tweeted, “What a Cabinet of Modi? HRD Minister (looking after education) Smriti Irani is not even a graduate.” Maken cited the educational qualification as mentioned in Irani’s election affidavit.

In her affidavit, Irani has mentioned her education qualification as “Bachelor of Commerce Part-1, School of Open Learning (Correspondence), University of Delhi-1994”.

The BJP was quick to hit back. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the comment was “most unfortunate”, adding, “The way Smriti speaks, both in Hindi and Cong takes a cheap shot at ‘non-graduate’ Smriti English… The Prime Minister has given her the portfolio (of HRD) on the basis of her capabilities.”

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, “To say that someone needs to be educated to be HRD Min(ister) is like saying one needs to be a pilot for Civil Aviation or a miner for Coal Min(ister).”

In a subsequent tweet, he clarified that by “educated”, he meant “highly qualified”. “That’s the problem with 140 letters — take “educated” in last tweet to mean “highly qualified” but I’m sure you get what I mean regardless,” Omar tweeted.

The high-profile portfolio — in the previous NDA government, it was held by M M Joshi — has pitchforked Irani ahead of the new crop of BJP leaders like Nirmala Sitharaman, Meenakshi Lekhi and Saroj Pandey. Though eyebrows have been raised over Modi’s decision on the grounds of her educational and political credentials, the fact that she comes without any baggage may hold her in good stead.

A party leader who did not wish to be named said, “No doubt, it will make her a front-ranking woman leader of the party.”
Irani was the BJP’s women’s wing chief during Nitin Gadkari’s tenure as BJP president till early last year, before being promoted as the party vice-president by Rajnath Singh last year.

Sitharaman, who has been made MoS (independent charge), has been an effective party spokesperson but Irani left her behind by being elected to Rajya Sabha in 2011. While Pandey replaced Irani as the BJP’s women’s wing chief, she lost the just concluded Lok Sabha elections. Irani too lost the elections but she put up a tough fight against Rahul Gandhi in. Lekhi won the elections from New Delhi, but lost in the ministerial race.

What may have proved an advantage for Irani is that even before she took the political plunge, she became a household name for her role in TV serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi that had a marathon run between 2000-08.

Roped in by the BJP in 2003, she showed an appetite for fighting big political battles. She contested against Congress leader Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections but lost.

Irani has demonstrated her capability as an organiser in the past one year when she served as party in-charge of Goa. She held several booth-level workers’ meeting in Goa that culminated in what could be considered as one of the biggest political rallies in the state addressed by Modi early this year.

In 2004, she threatened to go on a fast over Modi’s alleged role in the 2002 riots. Her outbursts obviously appears to have been forgotten and was demonstrated publicly when Modi declared her as “chhoti behen” during an election rally in Amethi.

It is true that if someone has experience in a field, it is an advantage.

Yet, one who may have experience in a field, may not be the best of administrator or a leader.

Therefore, a Minister works through the officials and technocrat.

If experience and expertise were the only criteria for Ministership, then the Defence should be headed by a General, Aviation by a pilot, Railways by an engine driver/ guard/ or a person from the Railways Board, Urban Development by a mason and so on.

Further, if expertise was the only criterion, the can one explain how an educated economist like MMS, brought Indian economy to its knees?

And how come Sonia Gandhi, who it is claimed is not even high school qualified, headed the destiny of the country and enunciated policies?

Maken is an ass and so is Manu Singhvi.

It reminds me of an incident when Russi Modi [whom we lost very recently] was in an IIM convocation, one of the student asked him how come he [Read Russi Modi] become such a good management guy heading TATA Steel when he did not study management.... a quick reply from Russi Modi was because he was not one of the alumni of IIM's on a lighter sense ... all went into laughter...

    On a serious note....

The illiterate congress men are still sulking from resounding defeat...

At least she is not faking like raul Gandhi or sonia claiming to have done Masters in Harvard University. She is frank enough to accept that she has completed1st year BCom.

The last HRD minister we had was Harvard educated and look where we are now.
We had a law minister from Oxford and we know what happened
We had a Harvard educated Finance Minister and the economy tanked.

We had a Supreme Leader who was just school pass and she has all these fancy degrees wagging their tails at her command.

So you tell me which is better.

A BA pass from Hansraj could not have written that letter: Aiyar

When Sports Minister Ajay Maken wrote to the PM accusing Mani Shankar Aiyar of being an "obstructionist" in the conduct of the Commonwealth Games, little did he know that he would get it back in spades. In a TV interview, Aiyar held up Maken's letter for ridicule. How, he asked, could a BA pass from Hansraj College use big words like 'dichotomous.' Apparently only Stephanians and Doon Goons like Aiyar know a few more words from the dictionary. In an interview to CNN-IBN, Aiyar kept emphasising that BA pass boys from Hansraj would not know what the word 'dichotomous' meant and insisted that the interviewer confirm the authenticity of the letter allegedly sent by Maken to Manmohan Singh. Maken accused Aiyar of misleading the government on the Commonwealth games.

Is this the reason why Maken has brought up the issue of education so that he could copycat Mani Shankar, who with vitriolic delight demolished Maken, and get a feel good feeling once again, having ruined the prospects of Prince Charming being in charge for communication in the Congress election bandobast?

Seems like ComCon didn't learn even a single lesson after their pathetic shameful defeat.

Did Ajay Maken first ask Antonia (also known as Sonia Gandhi) about her education???

Sonia Gandhi has not studied beyond Primary School. She has falsely claimed in her affidavit filed as a contesting candidate before the Rae Bareli Returning Officer in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections that she is qualified and got a diploma in English from the prestigious University of Cambridge, UK.The truth is that Ms. Gandhi has never studied in any college anywhere. Poverty those days forced young Italian girls to go to such missionaries and then in their teens go to UK to get jobs as cleaning maids, waitresses and au pair. She was a waitress once!!

Did Ajay Maken first ask Raul Vinci (also known as Rahul Gandhi) about his education and FAKE M. Phil ???

Why is he (Rahul Gandhi) registered as Rahul Vinci Gandhi in Rolings college in Orlando or some place like that, which is a Christian missionary college. Why did he not register himself as Rahul Gandhi? Why did he claim he has M.Phil from Cambridge. University of Cambridge has no record of any thesis, you cannot get M.Phil without any thesis.

Ajay Maken has INSULTED Sonia and Raul and his own party "Congress". What a IDIOT. This has boomranged badly.

Congress ought to have been more intellectual on its position since qualifications on affidavits is something that can revert onto them pretty fast and with stronger magnitude.

Also I never knew passing year 1 of a university correspondence course is a qualification. It is obvious that it is there to supersede what was written previously.

But I wish this debate was more advanced and put on a parameter of a wider qualification and selection debate of ministers by the prime minister. I would like a new system ( be it customary be it procedural) where all cabinet ministers nominated by the prime minister be presented to the Parliament (both houses) for confirmation or rejection by a simple majority. If they are approved, they are sworn in and then begin their duties. The cabinet ministers serve at the pleasure of the legislature and prime minister which means that the Prime minister (and parliament) can dismiss them or reappoint them (to other posts) at will.

Something akin to the senate confirmation process for cabinet members in the USA.

If this approach was taken the criticism ought to be handled before the appointment not after the appointment,

Stupid idea. Why do people always try to emulate the westrn idea?

Have you considered that the confirmation process involves nominated people who have not been elected by the people, hence validation by the pepple's representitives is required.

Whereas in India the ministers have already been elected by the people either directly in LS or indirectly in RS.

Like any effective CEO of any company, the PM should be free to select his own team w/o hindrance from the uncooperative opposition as is norm of our political strata.

There have been many in the Congress Party who have held high posts in the Ministries and who were not even educated.in the formal sense.

For instance, Abul Kalam Azad, the Union Education Minster.

Azad, was a master in several languages, including Arabic, English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Bengali (he was born in Calcutta).

And his education was confined to being trained in the Mazahibs of [Hanafi], [Maliki], Shafi'i and Hanbali fiqh, shariat, mathematics, philosophy, world history and science by reputed tutors hired by his family.

He was acclaimed as a great scholar.

But, as per Maken and Manu Singhvi, he would have been an illiterate!

That is the irony of elitists.
