    ‘I’m a Hindu nationalist because I’m born Hindu’

    Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has described himself as a “Hindu nationalist” because he was a born Hindu.

    “I am nationalist. I’m patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born Hindu. Nothing is wrong. So I’m a Hindu nationalist. So yes, you can say I’m a Hindu nationalist because I’m a born Hindu,” he told Reuters news agency in an interview in his official residence in Gandhinagar.

    He was asked as to who was the “real Modi” — Hindu nationalist or a pro-business Chief Minister?

    “As far as progressive, development, workaholic, whatever they say, this is what they are saying. So there’s no contradiction between the two. It’s one and the same image,” he said.

    ‘Had done absolutely right thing in 2002’

    He said that he had done “absolutely right thing” in 2002 when the State was hit by the post-Godhra riots and that an SIT set up by the Supreme Court had given him a “thoroughly clean chit”.

    Mr. Modi was asked whether it was frustrating when many people define him by 2002.

    He responded by saying that he would feel guilty if he had done something wrong. “Frustration comes when you think ‘I got caught. I was stealing and I got caught.’ That’s not my case.”

    Asked if he regretted what had happened, he was quoted by Reuters as saying that the Supreme Court had created a Special Investigating Team which in its report had given him a “thoroughly clean chit, a thoroughly clean chit”.

    “Another thing, any person if we are driving a car, we are a driver, and someone else is driving a car and we’re sitting behind, even then if a puppy comes under the wheel, will be painful or not? Of course, it is. If I’m a Chief Minister or not, I’m a human being. If something bad happens anywhere, it is natural to be sad.”

    Mr. Modi was asked whether he had done the right thing in 2002.

    “Absolutely. However much brainpower the Supreme Being has given us, however much experience I’ve got, and whatever I had available in that situation and this is what the SIT had investigated,” he replied.

    Answering a question about being regarded as a polarising figure, Mr. Modi cited the example of Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. to emphasise that polarisation was “democracy’s basic nature”.

    There is no such thing as hindu nationalist. Either one is hindu fundamentalist or Indian nationalist.

    I think he did a little word play.

    He is not referring to the formal meaning of the term.

    The point still stands.

    I am nationalist. I’m patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born muslim. Nothing is wrong. So I’m a muslim nationalist.
    I am nationalist. I’m patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born christian. Nothing is wrong. So I’m a christian nationalist.
    I am nationalist. I’m patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born sikh. Nothing is wrong. So I’m a sikh nationalist.
    I am nationalist. I’m patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born parsi. Nothing is wrong. So I’m a parsi nationalist.

    Would any of the above terms make you think that for such a person the nation would come first ?

    By your definition none of the US politicians would be US nationalist because all of them are proud to be Christians.

    Time for retarded definitions is over!

    That is hardly a correct analogy. Many Indian leaders are also proud followers of there respective religions.

    The problem arises when one puts religion above the nation. I dont see obama raving that he's a christian nationalist @W.G.Ewald

    This is the precise analogy.

    US media does not rave about him being christian nationalist(although they still talk about abortion laws!!). The Indian media and other so called seculars jump the gun on anyone calling himself a Hindu.

    When did Modi put religion above nation?

    I don't understand, does being born/practicing Hinduism make someone a fundamentalist automatically? Modi made a clear distinction in his statement.

    Nothing wrong in being a Hindu Nationalist if he is not rioting for the same, everyone is free to have his own views.

    No one is jumping because he called himself a hindu. People are jumping because he called himself a hindu nationalist. There's a difference between both the terms.

    Nothing wrong in one even being a hindu fundamentalist as long as one isn't rioting but one can never be a hindu nationalist because its an oxymoron.

    India = Nation
    Nation has many religions

    Hindu = Religion

    For a person to be a nationalist he must be willing to take everyone along within the nation. A hindu nationalist cannot take everyone along because he sees only hindus as nationals of a country thus he cannot be a nationalist in the correct meaning of the term.

    If you disagree with my assesment then do differentiate for me the difference between "Indian nationalist" and "hindu nationalist".
