Russia's United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) has reported assembly of the first Il-476 flight prototype, a modernized version of the Ilyushin Il-76MD heavy transport aircraft.
The prototype was shown publicly for the first time during the unofficial ceremony at the Aviastar-SP production facility in Ulyanovsk in mid-December. A UAC representative told Aviation Week that the official rollout ceremony will be in early 2012, while the first flight is expected in the spring.
The Il-476 is the first aircraft of this type assembled in Russia. Previous Il-76 modifications have been manufactured at the Tashkent-based TAPO plant in Uzbekistan, which is not controlled by UAC. Compared to the basic model, the Il-476 features a reinforced wing, modernized landing gear, new Perm PS-90A-76 engines and a digital cockpit. Altogether, the improvements are aimed at increasing the aircraft's payload from 50 to 60 tons, as well as the range by 27% and to reduce the fuel consumption by 18%, according to designers.
The center wingbox and the wing of another Ilyushin Il-476 prototype are undergoing static and endurance tests at TsAGI Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute in Zhukovsky, near Moscow.
UAC expects that the new transport will be purchased first by the Russian air force, but the military so far has not placed a contract for this type. The civil version, named Il-76-90A, reportedly will be available for commercial operators in 2015.

More powerful engines with better payload!!!

If the article is true about fuel consumption then it good buy for China's PLAAF. It seems a increase in size and payload means it could also transport Heavy MBTs. The present IAF IL-76 lack that capability!!

The difference between C-17s and IL-76s :
C-17s can carry upto 70 tons - Adrams, Arjun MBTs
IL-76s can carry upto 50 tons - T-72s and T-90s MBTs

The PLAAF are mostly interested in new IL76's for conversion into tankers and KJ2000 AWACS, and that's what I guess the huge order for the 76 is for.

Ilyushin should invest all the money by the orders got from IL-78 and IL-476 into new designs. They could approach present IL-76 operators and offer 476 for future requirements. Selling few aircrafts would help russia inducting the IL-476 in cost effective.

J20, Can the present PLAAF Il-76 capable to carry PLA MBTs?. If China place an order for more aircrafts, It would be a lifeline for Ilyushin.

Dunno why, IAF opted for C-17s when they could opt for bigger IL-76 variants. I agree C-17s are very effective but one C-17s cost similar to three IL-76s.

i think IL -76 can only carry 40 tons

C-17 can carry up to 70 to 80 tons

first of all bigger variants of il76 is not tried and tested. second C-17 is bit expensive but less on maintenance as these birds are there to be used for 30 yrs not for 30 days.so longer run C=17 gives better average

Russia unveils new military transport aircraft Il-476. 48116.jpeg

Russia has built a new military transport aircraft Il-476. Minister for Industry Denis Manturov told President Vladimir Putin that the transport plane was ready for its first test flight.

According to the minister, the technical characteristics of the aircraft are absolutely. The plane is "fully digitalized, changes were made in the control system, there is a new power system, a new pilot complex, a state-of-the-art glass cockpit." "The production was moved from Uzbekistan to Russia. In fact, it is a new production, a project in its final stage," Manturov said.

The flight range was increased by 25 percent. The load capacity was increased by 15-17 percent. The Minister added that such aircraft are manufactured only in the United States and Russia. "We are forming a package of orders," the minister said, expressing a hope that "there will be other customers after the Ministry of Defense."

By now, the plane has already performed two short flight; the plane is now ready for testing.

Vladimir Putin positively accepted the news. "This is good, good news. There are not many such planes in the world, and they are in high demand in the civil and defense fields," said the president. According to him, "one needs to finalize all the details connected with the organization of the procurement" so that the price matches the product, NTV said.

The President also instructed the head of the Ministry for Industry and Trade Denis Manturov to prepare a meeting to discuss the development of the domestic aviation industry, RBC said.

The IL-476 is an upgraded version of the military transport aircraft Il-76, which was previously produced commercially in Tashkent. In contrast to IL-76, the new plane has four Turbofan Engine with the thrust of 14.5 tons each. The engines are produced by Aviadvigatel (Perm). The maximum load was increased from 47 to 52 tons; the maximum take-off weight of the aircraft - from 190 to 210 tons. The range was increased up to 5,000 km. The state trial of the new aircraft is to be completed in 2013.

However, according to Vzglyad, sources at the Defense Ministry said that the IL-476 did not meet the requirements of the Russian Air Force, as the aircraft did not have several important systems. It goes about the equipment for setting active and passive noise, the rear fire point, the formation flight system, the warning system for the use of arms. In addition, the aircraft should be complete with handling equipment for dropping the cargoes with multy-canopy parachute systems.
