India Climbdown May Help China Border Dispute: BBC

"Fifty years after India and China fought a month-long war over their disputed Himalayan territory, hopes of a solution to the boundary dispute seem to be emerging.

India seems to be climbing down from a stiff position that not an inch of its land can be given away to China to resolve the border dispute that has dogged the two Asian giants since the 1950s.

"It is important to solve the India-China border dispute and for that some give and take is necessary," said retired General JJ Singh,Governor Of Arunachal Pradesh.

"India will have to move away from our position that our territory is non-negotiable," he said.

Gen Singh did not specify the "give-and-take" he thought necessary, but specialists feel that he was hinting at India accepting some of the Chinese positions on the disputed Himalayan border and vice-versa."(BBC News - India climbdown may help China border dispute)

Nehru sold out the Tibetans. Now his. successors are about to repeat Nehru's folly.Sell out India.

I hope this doesn't happen. Let the de facto border be, but we should be willing to pounce back when they are in a weak position.

I don't think we need to worry at this stage. The BBC are always banging on about Kashmir etc. they have to report something to justify their licence fee to the British public.

We must continue our investment in the new border roads, mountain regiments, C17s, Rafales, Javelines etc.
Speak softly, carry a big stick.

its stalemate if indian never back down. if india back down a bit, china will probably back down a bit too. compromise is a good thing. pushing forward is not always the best solution.

Why should India back down first? Why doesn't Chin back down first? Wherever the Han has set his foot, that soil belongs to the Chinese! Even France is Chin cos a Han set foot there!

its call immigration there are plenty indian in europe/america, are you claim the same.

anyway someone got to make first move. if china want to negotiate on boarders, and indian won't back down even a bit then there is no room for negotiation. if india back down a bit, and china not backing down, india can always withdrawn from the negotiation. the sooner the border dispute is over the better, both party has to make compromise in order to work. stubborn wont help, not against china.

England Climbdown will help resolve Irish Independence Issue
England has, and it has helped - slightly. See the Northern Ireland Assembly Northern Ireland Assembly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A similar assembly has been set-up in Wales, and there is also the Scottish Parliament.

But your analogy does apply for this topic as well, except that it should be China that needs to make the first significant move. China must give the 'Tibet Autonomous Region', more actual autonomy. Without this move, the Dalai Lama can never leave exile in India, and there will never be real peace between India and China. Any horse-trading over bits of land will ultimatly not lead to peace without addressing this underlying factor.

I do not understand why some readers are attacking BBC.They are merely reporting what the governor of Arunachal Pradesh said.BBC never suggested that India should back down. Those who have misread the report should read it again.I also would like to know from forum members if they know of any Indian media reporting this story.Nothing in TOI.Seems like a conspiracy of silence to me.Congress and allies are readying to appease PRC and surrender Indian territory.
Dr Manmohan Singh and friends are in for a surprise because Beijing does not subscribe to quid pro quo. They also believe that our leaders are cowards and corrupt and sooner or later PRC will get their way.You only need to look at Beijing's attitude to South China Sea dispute. The Chinese are pragmatic and very patient. The will not deploy the same strategy as in 1962.They will have an upper hand as India languishes vis a vis PRC.

'china will probably back down a bit too.'

India does not wish to take any more chances vis-a-vis China-Pakistan. Now if China was a democracy, perhaps there was a chance. Why don't you talk to us once you have democracy installed and you have given up your wishes to expand your territory.

I am wondering who gave him green light to speak on our foreign policy? Has any one from FM taken a note of his comments? We should maintain the status quo. We are not occupying anyone's land it is the other way around. Again time to change central Government and bring new fresh face to replace both the political party's. Both of them have proven to be weak when it comes down to border disputes with thugs on both side of the border.

I hope both of them one day experience communal, political and economical disturbance to such an extent that they will implode any look towards India for help.
