If war broke out between India and Pakistan today , the battle in the air will be between two old arch rivals--the Indian Mirage 2000 H and the Pakistani F-16 A/B.

The old Pakistani F-16s are not yet all modernised , and Indian mirages may not be .

So how will the unmodernised versions of the two aircraft stack up against each other ??

under the assumption of smiler pilot quality and negating outside assistance (ads, awacs est)
F-16 will have an edge over Mirage 2000
approx 2-3 kill ratio
according to the simulations that lead to the creation of eurofiter and Rafael

When there was NO SU 30 MKI , at that time ie from 1987 to 1997 Indian Mirage 2000 and Mig 29 were the main stays of IAF and IAF was CONFIDENT of knocking out the F16

Why because the institution called Tactical and air Combat Development establishment ( TACDE ) was assigned the role of developing tactics for knocking out F16 using Mig 29 and Mirage 2000

SO it can be assumed safely that IAF has had the plans and tactics in place for knocking out F16 using Mirage 2000 and Mig 29 for a very long time

Mirage 2000H is slightly better at interception and attack role. The F-16 is good as a dog fighter. Mig-29 is good as a dog fighter/ interceptor, but has short range. Probably F-16 will have the edge in a 1:1 fight. However, the Su-30 MKI is miles ahead of all three and will be used as a air superiority fighter, and will knock out the F-16s as seen in the IAF/USAF exercises.

Our Mirage-2000s are equipped with the Super 530D and Magic IIs along with the older Mica IR. So our Mirages can keep their non BVR capable F-16s engaged from longer ranges.

You are right, but our M2K's may not get that chance, as always MiG's will be protecting them and only MiG's get the chances to protect or use BVR capability to hunt down those F-16, as of M2K will only be equipped with only 2 A2A missiles for last self defence roles......

Greek Mirage vs Turkish F-16 dogfight over the Aegean.
Tensions are mounting once again in the Aegean sea where Turkey has made many territorial claims over Greece. Turkish F-16's are casually trespassing Greek airspace and are subsequently being intercepted by Greek fighters.

If not on flankers, french should have no problems on placing meteor missiles on our Mirages. I hope they have european radars.
That would be an expensive proposition, not to mention current PESA radars on upgraded Mirages don't take full advantage of Meteors long range. Not to mention it is expensive. We should be instead focusing on SFDR.

(Sorry for off-topic post, didnt know where else to post)

Retired USAF F16 pilot explains how Greek AF Mirage 2000 took Turkish F16 to the cleaners:

He also highlighted that the Turkish F-16 was dog-fighting with its 2 Drops Tank on it; more of a fighting with one hand tied. It could be a situation when both sides were testing each other knowing fully well that neither of them will go offensive.

For comparison part, F-16 holds slight advantage due to better engine, armaments (AMRAAMs), HMDS, & kinematic performance vis-a-vis M2K.

If we are going to do Comparison between Mirage and F-16s of the IAF and PAF respectively than we should do Comparison between IAF' s Mirage 2000 (Upgraded) and PAF's F-16 block 50/52 standard Aircrafts. Both are very capable planes.

In sustained Turn Rate Dogfight. The F-16 will have the Advantage as it has superior Sustain Turn Rate. Mirage-2000 has edge in Single Circle dogfight. If both the Planes are forced into a single circle dogfight than if the Mirage-2000 Pilot is Very professional than he will Destroy the F-16. I think so the Mirage-2000 will have an edge in terms of Close in Weopon Package. F-16 has edge in BVR though.

F-16 holds slight advantage
Slight advantage is all that counts. MICA (Max range 60km) armed M2k are no match for PAF AMRAAM C5 (Max range greater than 110km).

Let's admit that M2K-5 upgrade was a scam. It did not even "bring up" Mirage 2000 to two decades old F-16 block50/52 standard. Refusal of Dassault to integrate AESA and Meteor should have been a solid reason to walk away from the deal.

We will have edge over PAF with Astra MK-1. AMRAAM AIM-120C5 has a Range of 105 kms. Astra MK-1 has a range of 110 kms. So Astra is Superior or on Par with AMRAAM AIM-120C5 in terms of Range. So astra mk-1 is what will help gain the edge Against PAF in BVR Domain. Coming to IAF Mirage-2000 than yes ,PAF F-16 has Advantage against it in terms of BVR. I accept this.

But let's Do you know how our 1 SU-30 MKI (Avenger, 1) Dodged a Barrage of 4-5 AMRAAM AIM-120C5? You see this was because PAF is not very Professional in its BVR Tactics. They fired AMRAAMS From DMAX range and hence our SU-30 MKI Dodged them all. Also Jammers were involved in Helping Evade AMRAAMS. That Day PAF wasted 4-5 AMRAAM. Cost of each AMRAAM is From $300,000–$400,000 for 120C variants.

That means PAF wasted more than 1.2 million Dollars. So we know that AMRAAM is a Threat but we are well aware of how to effectively counter it.

PAF uses the Following Variants of F-16-
  • 1)F-16 AM/BM Block 15 MLU
  • 2)F-16 A/B ADF
  • 3)F-16 C/D Block 52
Out of These only the Block 52 are capable of Firing AMRAAM AIM-120C5 Because all pictures I have seen ,I have seen only Block 52 (You can identify Block-52 by the Conformal Fuel Tanks) Carry AIM-120C5. Hence these are the Ones which will be a threat. Rest all of the F-16s can Fire AIM-9 sidewinder.
