What a shame for Egypt that they have to take Israeli authorization to fly F-16's over Sinai which is a part of Egypt actually....imagine India needed paki authorization to fly Sukhois over Kashmir....shame...
I think one of the conditions that was agreed upon (by both Egypt and Israel) when Israel returned the Sinai peninsula, was that military activity in the Sinai would be very restricted. That could be the reason.

Geography which I learned in my school. Its a well known fact that Sinai is Egyptian territory and only part of Egypt in Asia. Suez canal is the only thing which separates Sinai area with mainland Egypt in Africa

The Sinai Peninsula or Sinai (Arabic: سيناء"Ž SÄ«nāʼ ; Egyptian Arabic: سينا SÄ«na, IPA: [ˈsiːnæ]) is a triangular peninsula in Egypt about 60,000 km2 (23,000 sq mi) in area. It is situated between the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the Red Sea to the south, and is the only part of Egyptian territory located in Asia as opposed to Africa,

Exactly.... after Egypt lost Sinai peninsula to Israel in war Israel gave it back on the condition that Egypt cannot deploy heavy armor / air force (except some police force) in Sinai without Israel's approval....after that US-Israel made sure that their puppet in the form of Mubarak runs the country , buy substandard F-16's and other weapons in comparison of to what Israel got.....and today to even deal with terrorism in Sinai (part of Egypt ) they have to ask Israeli approval....

Imagine if Pak was in position to demand these kind of things to India in Kashmir??? I cannot even imagine that life being an Indian...though in reality India would beat Pak to death for demanding this nonsense but thats a different topic for discussion....

Egyptian security forces destroy 8 Gaza tunnels

Egyptian security forces on Saturday destroyed eight smuggling tunnels under the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

Citing an Egyptian military source, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported that the tunnels were demolished in order to protect Egypt's borders "in all strategic directions."

The source said eight tunnels were demolished "under the borders in Rafah."

Grant me the silence to ignore what will take care of itself, the voice to shine light on what needs attention, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Hamas uses smuggling tunnels into Egypt as a way to circumvent the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip and smuggle weapons, building supplies, fuel and consumer goods into the Palestinian territory.

Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July, however, the Egyptian military has clamped down on tunneling after it became clear that the subterranean routes also facilitated the transfer of military supplies, equipment and personnel to Islamist militias operating in the northern Sinai Peninsula.

The Egyptian army is engaged in a widespread military operation to regain control of Sinai from militant groups that have killed dozens of Egyptian policemen and soldiers.

In October, a senior Hamas official said that Egypt's closure of smuggling tunnels between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip is costing the organization $230 million in lost revenue.

Militants Down Egyptian Helicopter, Killing 5 Soldiers

Islamist militants shot down an Egyptian military helicopter in the Sinai Peninsula with a surface-to-air missile over the weekend, raising new alarms about the terrorist insurgency that developed there in response to the military takeover last summer.

The attack — described by witnesses, documented in a video released by the militants, and confirmed by three people briefed on the Egyptian government's investigation — validated longstanding fears that such weapons would spill into Egypt and beyond after the Libyan civil war tore open Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi's fearsome arsenals.

Known as manpads, for man-portable air defense systems, the missiles can bring down commercial airliners if they are flying at low altitude, as during takeoff and landing. They also strengthen Sinai-based militants' hand against the Egyptian Army, and there is concern that the militants might seek to use the missiles on the Egyptian mainland, where terrorist attacks have become more frequent. On Saturday, four bombings killed six people in greater Cairo.

Egyptian militants downed helo with Igla-type MANPADS

A still taken from a video released by militants show the MANPADS used in the 25 January attack has a similar BCU and dimensions to that of the Igla series. Source: Jamaat Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis

Contrary to initial reports, the man-portable air defence system (MANPADS) used to shoot down an Egyptian military helicopter on 25 January was not a Strela-2 series (SA-7 'Grail'), but a more sophisticated missile system.

The Sunni radical group Jamaat Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis released a video on 26 January showing an operative firing a MANPADS at an Mi-8/17 transport helicopter, which then crashes, but the front end of the system had been deliberately blurred in post-production to make it difficult to identify.

Egyptian sources reported that a 'SAM-7' (a derivative of the SA-7 designation) was used in the attack, which happened near the border with the Gaza Strip and killed five soldiers. The New York Times cited a senior US official as saying the preliminary evidence indicated it was a 9K32 Strela-2.

However, a single frame from the video taken as the operator ducks to avoid the dust caused by the main motor ignition shows the MANPADS he is holding has an angled battery coolant unit (BCU) like the ones used by the Russian 9K34 Strela-3 (SA-14 'Gremlin') Igla series rather than the horizontally aligned cylindrical battery used with the less advanced Strela-2 and -2M (9K32M).

Analysis of the video carried out by IHS Jane's shows the dimensions of the system's missile tube match those of the Igla series, but not the shorter and wider Strela-2, -2M and -3.

Strela-2s proliferated during the Libyan conflict in 2011 and some have probably been smuggled across Sinai to the Gaza Strip, where militants paraded the system last year. However, the effectiveness of the decades-old Libyan weapons is questionable.

In contrast, the Igla series - 9K310 Igla-1 (SA-16 'Gimlet'), 9K38 Igla (SA-18 'Grouse') and 9K338 Igla-S (SA-24 'Grinch') - is more advanced, but less common.

A spate of insurgent attacks involving Iglas followed the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, but they have rarely been seen in militant hands since 2007. Although Libya had the vehicle-mounted version of the Igla-S, it does not appear to have bought any man-portable Iglas.

The dimensions of the MANPADS seen in the video also fit those of the Chinese QW-2, which also uses an angled non-cylindrical BCU similar to those of the Igla series. Iran's military uses this system or a locally built version, but is not known to have transferred it to militants based in the Gaza Strip.

Egypt kills seven militants in Sinai airstrike

The Egyptian army said it killed seven militants in an air strike in the Sinai Peninsula less than a week after jihadists downed a military helicopter in the restive region.

The army said the Thursday night air raid hit militants linked to the Muslim Brotherhood of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, which the military-installed authorities have designated a terrorist organization despite its repeated condemnation of jihadist attacks against the security forces.

The air strike targeted four houses of "dangerous extremists linked to the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group" south of the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, the army said, adding that seven militants were killed and five wounded.

On January 25, militants shot down a military helicopter in the Sinai, killing five soldiers as Egyptians marked the third anniversary of the Arab Spring uprising that toppled veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak.

Al-Qaeda inspired group Ansar Bait al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) claimed responsibility for the downing, which was only belatedly acknowledged by the military after several days of insisting that it had been an accident.

The Sinai-based group has claimed a spate of attacks against the security forces in recent months, not only in the desert peninsula but also in the heart of the capital.

Islamist group blows up gas pipeline in Sinai

Egyptian security officials say suspected al-Qaeda-inspired saboteurs have blown up a natural gas pipeline in the restive Sinai Peninsula.

The officials say the explosion took place early Tuesday in a desert area south of el-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai. The pipeline carries natural gas to Jordan and feeds heavy industry factories in central Sinai.

The officials say pipeline technicians were forced to shut the flow of gas in order to get the fire under control. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to media.

There have been scores of attacks on the pipeline since the 2011 uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak and the security vacuum that ensued.

A Sinai-based group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has claimed responsibility for several such bombings.

Egypt creating buffer zone on Gaza-Sinai border, destroys 10 tunnels

Egyptian security source says that buffer would extend up to 500 meters in some areas.

The Egyptian army destroyed 10 tunnels and seven homes on the border with the Gaza in the Sinai peninsula on Saturday, Palestinian new agency Ma'an reported. The homes destroyed were those that the tunnels were located in, an Egyptian security source told Ma'an.

The destruction of the tunnels is part of an Egyptian campaign to create a buffer zone along the border with Gaza in the town of Rafah that would extend 300 meters in populated areas and 500 meters in open areas, according to the security source.

Also on Saturday, the Egyptian army safely detonated three explosive devices placed in military vehicles and armored cars in the northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, and it raided militant strongholds in the area, the Egyptian security source told Ma'an.

The Egyptian army and police in the Sinai have been targeted by Islamist rebels persistently since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi last year.

Three reported killed in blast near Taba crossing with Egypt

An explosion reportedly ripped through a tourist bus on the Egyptian side of the Taba border crossing with Israel Sunday afternoon.

Three Korean tourists were killed in the blast, according Egyptian police cited by news agencies.

The bus was carrying 30 tourists of different nationalities, Egypt's al-Ahram reported. Egyptian media reported 13 people were injured in the blast.

No Israelis were among the casualties, an Israeli police spokesman said.

The nature of the blast was not initially clear.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson said the issue was being handled by Egypt.

Israel halted operation at the border after the explosion and a rescue crew readied an ambulance for possible casualties, according to a Walla report.

The crossing, near the southern resort city of Eilat, is the main civilian crossing point between Israel and Egypt. It is often used by Israeli vacationers, though recent unrest in the Sinai Peninsula has slowed the flow of tourists to a trickle.

In 2004, a bomb blast at a Hilton Hotel in Taba frequented by Israelis killed 31 people. The hotel, which houses a casino, is about 100 meters from the border

Egypt 'destroys 1,370 Gaza smuggling tunnels'

Egypt's military said Wednesday it has destroyed 1,370 smuggling tunnels under its border with the Gaza Strip, as Cairo's ties remain sour with the Hamas movement that rules the Palestinian enclave.

The statement did not say when the tunnels were destroyed, but the military has poured troops into the adjacent Sinai Peninsula to counter militancy that has grown since July. (AFP)

Nine wounded in Sinai bomb attack

Seven police conscripts and two civilians were wounded on Wednesday in a bomb blast in the town of El-Arish, the capital of Egypt's restive northern Sinai peninsula, security officials said.

A child was run over by a car in the aftermath of the attack, as panic erupted on the scene, the officials added.

Militants have stepped up assaults on security forces since the army ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July and the military-installed authorities launched a deadly crackdown on his supporters.

Wednesday's attack targeted a police armored vehicle in El-Arish's centre, the officials said.

After the blast, gunfights erupted between the security forces and the assailants, who managed to escape, the officials added.

Most of the attacks have been taking place in the north of the mainly desert Sinai Peninsula, but militants have extended their reach to Cairo and the Nile Delta, carrying out a series of high-profile attacks in the heart of the capital.

The Al-Qaeda inspired Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (Partisans of Jerusalem) group has said its attacks have been in revenge for the crackdown on Morsi's supporters that has left at least 1,400 people dead, according to Amnesty International.

A little-known jihadist group, Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) has also claimed several attacks on police in Cairo.

The government says the militants have killed about 500 people, most of them security personnel.
