Militants attack CISF jawans in Srinagar; one dead

Srinagar: One jawan of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was killed and another critically injured when militants opened fire in Srinagar on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Police said.

Search operation is on to track militants who opened fire on the jawans near the Naaz cinema building in Iqbal Park area of the city.

Reports said that as the firing took place in the bustling market area jawans could not retaliate.

Aashiq Bukhari,SSP Srinagar, said, "The firing started at 10:30 am today."

Bukhari added that search operations were on to nab the militants.

"One of the injured CISF troopers died while being shifted to the hospital and the other has been admitted to hospital with critical bullet injuries," a senior police officer told.

Panic gripped the area with shopkeepers and pedestrians running helter skelter after the firing incident.

Senior police and paramilitary officials reached the spot.

The CISF troopers were reportedly buying vegetables outside the Naaz cinema building situated less than a kilometer from city centre Lal Chowk when the attack took place.

With the outbreak of separatist violence in Kashmir, Naaz cinema shut its operations in the beginning of 1990.

Why present the half report?

The could not retaliate because they were not carrying fire arms while on-duty there.

This is similar to the incident where 5 CRPF jawans were killed by militants near a school ground where they had assembled and were not carrying arms and could not retaliate.

Those CRPF jawans were not carrying arms on duty under request by the state govt. who were more concerned about 'visibility of police presence' and not about the life of jawans on duty.

Anyways RIP to the brave jawan and wish early recovery to the injured.

Acc. Times Now report the jawans left their weapons in the vehicle as they got down in the market to buy fish.
But they were wearing BPJ's at the time.

Yes, there is a possibility of that happening.
I was wondering why were CISF deployed there, who are generally there to guard Industrial and high value institutional areas and buildings.

But, one thing is clear that they could not retaliate because they had no fire arms with them at that moment.

mate BPJ or no BPJ a 7.62mm bullet fired from point blank range will always have fatal impact on the victim.plus the BPJs issued to the CAPF are customised to stop a 7.62mm bullet fired 10 metres away from an AK series assault rifle.so if they are fired within this 10m range the BPJ won't be able to stop the bullet from piercing the metal plate inside the BPJ pocket.
this is precise reason why the Home Ministry have issued orders for more than 59,000 level-3 BPJs which are made of of strong nylon and kevlar materials for the C.A.P.F.these BPJs will offer more resistance to an incoming 5.56/7.62mm and will have soft inner pads to protect the victim from any internal injury.secondly, these BPJs will be extremely lightweight hence the personnel wearing them wiwon't be cowed down by the bulkiness(the problem that they face at present).

Srinagar encounter ends, militant manages to escape

The siege in Srinagar's Ahmadnagar area ended on Thursday morning after the militant, who was trapped inside a house, reportedly managed to the escape under the cover of darkness.

On Wednesday, a raid was launched based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, Abu Huraira, in the area.

While the police officially confirmed the presence of only one militant, sources said there were more holed up inside the house.

According to police sources, the militant started a counter attack on security forces and opened heavy gunfire and hurled grenades around 2am and managed to give cops the slip taking advantage of the dense tree cover behind the cordoned house.

The police, however, are tightlipped about the outcome of the encounter so far.

According to local residents, the police and CRPF cordoned off the area around 6pm on Wednesday and started house-to-house searches. They zeroed in on a two-storey house in old Ahmednagar on the city outskirts, where militants were hiding in a room on the first floor.

But even before the security forces could act, militants lobbed grenades and fired upon the raiding party resulting in injuries to eight personnel, including two officers.

The injured policemen were shifted to the SKIMS hospital, where the condition of one constable was stated to be critical.

According to sources, Abu Hurara is the operations chief of LeT in Srinagar and had moved recently into an adjacent area with his group after being injured in a firefight with security forces. The police have been keeping a track of his activities and Wednesday's operation was based on days of surveillance and human intelligence.
If true, This is serious security lapse. Why was a cordon not placed around the area 24/7 ???

Why so much political correction? IS using the term terrorists a sin? Will it hurt some vote bank? And if yes, then who is it?
