You have to understand that the ranges quoted in the brochures are the best achieved ranges, probably taken at high altitudes where the air is less denser. Say if a war happens during monsoon season, the rain droplets induced atmospheric attenuation would decrease X-band radar ranges like crazy. AWACS's L-band radars would be slightly affected but not as much as X-band fighter plane radars.
If they are flying at high altitudes, then how many clouds do you think they will fly under? :namaste:

Btw, Got some few question regarding about MiG-29 and its upgradations
- How much change the new Zhuk-ME could bring compare to present IAF MiG-29 radar?. Both the radars are BVR capable, Even if the Zukh-ME model has far better range but still in the end it has to launch the R-77 at same range.
- What about EW systems, Are they russian or Israeli? I Hope the new Migs are fitted with best ew systems available.
- Are the present non-upgraded MiG-29s acapable to launch anti-radiation missiles?
In A2A as you pointed out the advantages will be mainly range an and tracking capabilities, but the new radar will add multi mode capabilities to detect A2G targets as well. The main part of the upgrade is adding multi role capabilities, with more hardpoints, new A2G weapons, less need of fuel tanks which frees hardpoints for weapons again. However, compared to the Mirage upgrade, the Mig will remain to be inferior and as soon as Rafale is inducted, it might even lose the quick reaction interceptor role. This upgrade is mainly a life extention for a fighter that has not much potential anymore.
EW systems are a mix of India, European and Israeli again, depending on which source is correct, but neither IAF nor IN would have taken the normal Russian one.
After the upgrade they will be able to use Kh 31, but only 2 of them, while MKI can carry up to 6 and would be the better choice for that role.

India should have bought Mig-35 in MMRCA which is a really a top end fighter in Mig family , plus the operation cost would have been low since IAF & IN operates Mig-29B & Mig-29K

But many might argue we would face risk of monopoly in Fighters fleet

Russia lost MMRCA because of their poor timeline & cost overrun in few major projects like INS Vikramaditya, Talwar class frigate , INS CHAKRA , T-90 & few hick ups with Su-30MKI:sad:

MiG-29M2 at MAKS-2013 training:
MiG-29M OVT at the same place:
And MiG-29SMT as well:
@gadeshi : Could you please point out differences between the 3 ?

Which is the closest to latest IAF & Indian Navy versions ?

Which was offered as Mig35 in MMRCA ?

MiG-29M OVT is MiG-35
MiG-29M is further evolution of MiG-29
MiG-29SMT is upgraded MiG-29 (with many of the improvements meant for MiG-29M)

@appolion, completely WRONG!!!

The family roadmap is the following:
MiG-29 (9-12) - A basic AD fighter (India has received 9-12A - export version for allies)
MiG-29 (9-13) - A basic AD fighter with ECM suit and extended fuel tanks (Soviet AF only)
MiG-29UB (9-51) - A basic 2-seater fighter/trainer (India has received 9-51A - export variant for allies)
MiG-29S (9-13S) - Updated 9-13 with Planar Array Zhuk radar and R-77 missiles
MiG-29SM (9-14M) - 9-13S with precicion strike capability
MiG-29M (9-15) - Completely reworked 9-13S with Zhuk-M radar, new sharp LEX without jabras, new tailboom, larger wing and tailplanes and new wing with 8 hardpoints - left in prototypes only.
MiG-29OVT (9-15OVT) - The old M variant with TVC - a TVC and supermaneurability testbed. No relation to MiG-35!!!.
MiG-29K (9-31) - Old variant of K model based on M (9-15)
MiG-29SMT (9-17, 9-18, 9-19) - Modernised S (9-13S) variant with even more extended fuel capacity and new Zhuk MS/MSF radar, half-glass cockpit and refuelling probe.
MiG-29UBT (9-52) - A 2-seater fighter-trainer based on SMT.
MiG-29UPG (9-20) - A variant to modernize Indian 9-12A to SMT level with foreign parts.
MiG-29K (9-41) - A new unified body fighter with Zhuk-MS/M2 radar, new avionics and wing with 8 hardpoints - Indian and Russian Navies variant.
MiG-29KUB (9-47) - A new unified body 2-seater fighter with Zhuk-MS/M2 radar, new avionics and wing with 8 hardpoints - Indian and Russian Navies variant.
MiG-29M (9-55?) - A new M variant - a unibody family fighter (in fact, it is shore-based K (9-41) variant with fixed wings and litened body)
MiG-29M2 (9-57?) - A fighter-trainer based on KUB (9-47) with fixed wing and litened body
MiG-35 (9-61) - A modernized new M (9-55) variant based on K (9-41) with new avionics, full-glass cockpit, TVC and Zhuk-A AESA radar. This is MMRCA participant
MiG-35D (9-67) - A modernized new M2 (9-57) variant based on KUB (9-41) with new avionics, full-glass cockpit, TVC and Zhuk-A AESA radar.

BTW, Russian AF postponed MiG-35 contract on 3 years to give Fazotron a time to develop and fix a new AESA radar (name or designation are currently unknown) with 260 km detection range.

The internal DB cipher with new radar is currently unknown. Deliveries will be in 2016.

Anybody got extra money...

One of the most exciting programs - it is a flight into the stratosphere in the MiG-29. You can climb to an altitude of 20 km, and see firsthand the curvature of the horizon and the blackness of space above your head.
The program also includes performing aerobatics.

Just cost of the program is from 380,000 to 550,000 rubles, you can pay in installments.

One of the most costliest Plane in the world .... IAF stated Mig 25 as Pure Alcoholic... It drinks Alcohol to cool down it engines..
so it will be more costly...

Actually there is an option.. IAF are not operating FOX-BAT now.. In future there may be slight hope for..
my option goes for mig-29 or su- 30mki/35. they have Aerobatics

Russia to deliver six warplanes to India

Ref: Russia to deliver six warplanes to India - The Times of India

MOSCOW: Russia is set to deliver six more jet fighters of 4++ generation this year to Indian Air Force as per a deal with New Delhi, the MIG aircraft corporation said on Wednesday.

"India currently exploits 21 aircrafts. In line with a contract, we must deliver 29 planes by 2015. Last year, we've delivered four planes. This year, we've delivered one plane and six aircrafts remain to be delivered," MIG's director general Sergei Korotkov told reporters at the MAKS air show, Xinhua reported.

The six-day MAKS show kicked off in Zhukovsky city outside Moscow on Tuesday.

MIG signed a $1.5 billion deal with India in 2010 to deliver 29 MIG-29K-KUB warplanes.

This is the second such contract between the Russian aircraft construction corporation and New Delhi. The first deal to supply India with 16 MIGs-29 was signed in 2004 and completed in 2011.

During MAKS, the Russian corporation also signed two deals worth $55 million to build a centre in India to service MIG's avionics and hardware, the corporation's spokesperson Elena Fedorova said.

MIG's partner in those deals is Basant Aerospace Private Ltd, she added.

MIG commenced production of new unified family of multi-role fighters of the 4++ generation in 2005.

The double-seat MIG-29K-KUB is a multi-role fighter intended for air-defence missions of naval forces, air superiority gaining, sea and ground target destruction with high precision guided weapons day and night and in any weather condition.

care to explain why would the Indian Navy get pissed with Mig-29K aircraft which is really a new 4++ generation avatar of the legendary Mig-29.afaik,the I.N. has been operating those vintage Sea Harriers for decades and the induction of these Mig-29K aircraft will seriously increase the power projection of the I.N. in the I.O.R.!
