In the US, advocacy of embryonic stem cell research is tied politically to unlimited government-funded abortion. The science is irrelevant in that context. At the DNC convention prior to the 2004 presidential election, Christopher Reeves was wheeled in as the poster boy for stem cell cell research.

Re: Americans flocking to India for stem cell therapy

It is in our blood to help others. If we can help others by our indigenous techniques or treatment then nothing is better than that.

So, there are no Indian medical charlatans. That is so good to know.

See, Americans mostly have to go to Mexico to get taken with bogus cancer treatments.

stem cells treatments are still viewed as experimental. Until more cases are gathered
and results are shown and treatments become standardized they will be viewed this way.
But Patients who volunteer often have no other option this is a last line for many.

There is no doubt stem cell research will show many medical benefits. The artificial argument that all stem cells must come from aborted fetuses is questionable.

Sir stem cell research has huge potential for medicine.
Here is a list of stuff which will benefit from it

1. Cure/treatment for cancers like Leukemias, Hepatocellular cancer etc
2. Aplastic anaemia/ or any aplastic blood disorders
3. All kinds of organ transplants.
-------->>>> In transplants section alone, the benefits are so huge. Traditional transplants need immuno suppression since the transplant recieved by the body is foreign to it, just like the way microbes are viewed foreign by the body's immune system. Hence, just like the way, the body's immune system clears the infection, the body's immune system tries to clear the transplant, since that transplant is a foreign material to the body. But in case of stem cells, which have been harvested for a boy at his birth, this stem cells can be used for the culture of the organs artificially for transplant, which can be used without the fear of transplant rejection/ immune reaction, since the stem cell has been taken from the same body. So they will have the same genetic material as the host and hence are not considered as foreign by the host's immune system and hence no reaction.

Why this is important is because the transplant patients, not only suffer from the graft rejection, which leads to failure of the transplant, they also need a significant immuno suppressive therapy, which will make them susceptible to oppurtunistic infection, which usually dont bother the healthy persons, just like the persons with AIDS. Hence, the potential benefits in this alone is worth investin a lot in the stem cell rethumb:

I agree the potential is vast it is really one of the few places where disease which
have no cures are being cured. This is just the very beginning for a much bigger
industry in the future.

Still, medical tourism is an odd term.

As if I'm dying of cancer so I'll seek treatment in another country; if I'm cured, so much the better. If not, it was a nice vacation anyway.:)
