Taiwan's MediaTek had over $7 billion in sales last year. Among the fabless semiconductor-design companies, MediaTek is behind only market-leader Qualcomm and Broadcom. Now, MediaTek has finally put a big dent into Qualcomm's LTE business. In the past, Qualcomm practically owned the entire LTE market.
By the way, MediaTek is larger than any European semiconductor company.
In 2010, Intel paid $1.4 billion for Infineon's LTE subsidiary. The investment never went anywhere. Intel has minuscule share in the worldwide LTE baseband market.
