Relief for Mayawati, HC rejects all PILs against her in Taj corridor case - India - Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: In a major relief for former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, the Allahabad High Court has dismissed all the Public Interest Litigations (PIL) in the Taj Corridor case. Several PILs had been filed challenging the Special CBI court order that dropped the proceedings against her.

Mayawati's lawyer Satish Mishra said that the cases were filed to malign Mayawati's image. "The petitioner filed objections against the CBI court's order. The objections were politically motivated as the cases were filed by people who were contesting elections and had lost to BSP," Mishra said.

The case had been dropped as the CBI was unable to obtain the Governor's sanction to prosecute Mayawati. The Rs 175-crore Taj Heritage corridor scam came to light in 2002-2003. The Supreme Court had turned down plea demanding Mayawati's prosecution in the case in 2007.

Mayawati's lawyer also said that the Rs 175-crore figure was wrong and claimed that only Rs 17 crore were sanctioned.

Nothing that will put one's trouser in a twist.

It was expected that the case will be made lukewarm so that it does not pass muster.

The winter session is looming and the FDI issue will be hotly debated and will be put to vote as a no confidence motion.

That is when, the Govt will require every single vote to survive.
