Cries for Freedom from Pakistan’s atrocities grow louder; after Balochistan, PoK on the boil
After Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan is now on fire after massive protests erupted against a crackdown by Pakistan’s security forces. Gilgit-Baltistan is a part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
According to reports, protesters have taken to the streets against a crackdown by Pakistani security forces that saw incarceration of over 500 young Gilgit residents. 500 young men have been imprisoned for demanding political rights and asking Pakistani Army to leave Gilgit’s soil, protesters are claiming. Among those jailed is Baba Jan, a top political activist in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Anti-Pakistan slogans have been raised and the protests have spread to Gilgit town, Astore, Diamer and Hunza of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. The protests also pertain to anguish among people that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), would likely only benefit China and Pakistan’s Punjabi traders. Protesters have even alleged that Pakistan is perpetrating massive human rights abuses to crush the political aspirations of the people of Gilgit.
Commenting on the ongoing protests, Jitendra Singh, MoS PMO, who is on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir said, “It is our moral & national responsibility to stand by our brothers in PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) & also Gilgit-Baltistan.” Singh has gone on to say, “One more freedom struggle is still left. We will ensure freedom for our brothers in PoK.” Singh’s statement comes within hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi taking a tough stance against Pakistan on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. “The time has come to expose Pakistan’s brutalities in Balochistan and Pak-occupied Kashmir,” was PM Modi’s bold message after an all-party meet. PM Modi has even asked for expats from PoK to be contacted to gather information on the “pitiable conditions” in the region and apprise the global community.
Meanwhile, BJP state spokesperson for Jammu and Kashmir, Brigadier Anil Gupta has welcomed PM Modi’s remarks, saying, “Provide moral, political and financial support to the freedom movement in PoK.” Gupta has urged that a process of dialogue should be initiated with expatriates all over the world from the region. Gupta has also claimed that slogan of ‘azadi’ (freedom) has been reverberating in PoK. According to him, widespread protests are going on in all the major towns such as Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Chinari and Kotli. “The protests are spontaneous and an expression of disgust and anger over the atrocities committed by the federal government and the Pakistani army. In fact, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, also part of Jammu and Kashmir, too have revolted against exploitation and repression by Pakistan,” he said has said.
Describing Pakistan as an “occupier” of Gilgit-Baltistan, a US-based organisation has said that Islamabad’s withdrawal from this part of Jammu and Kashmir would help resolve the Kashmir issue. Senge Sering, director of the Washington DC-based Gilgit-Baltistan National Congress has also said that the withdrawal of Pakistan from Gilgit-Baltistan will help in resolving the J&K issue. “Indian Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi’s policy to highlight human rights violations in Gilgit-Baltistan is a positive step,” he added.

Maulana Rockullah's Expert comment: So a day before Paki independence and a day after MODI's rebuke to Terrorist Pakistan, the PoK locals are doing a massive protest. Baloch leaders have already thanked India for their first ever open moral support. Pakistan is really nervous, annoyed and baffled.I suspect that Terrorist Pakistan is now planning a terrorist attack on India.
