According to some on reddit, it was a chemical warehouse. According to state sponsored media, it was a petrol station.

It does not look like a petro fire.

A massive explosion rocked a key industrial area in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday night, according Chinese media.

“All of a sudden there was a flash of big red light, and a big sound,” one online user who claimed to live near the blast site said. “And 10 seconds afterwards, there was a big wave.”

Another online user said the door of his flat was broken by a strong tremor.

China National Radio reported that cracks were visible in buildings near the sit

As expected, there's a media blackout, and foreign media is being kept away from the affected area, hospitals, etc.

A CNN crew was mishandled and arrested for reporting from outside a hospital. Official casualties are 17 killed and 250+ injured, with property-damage up to 3 km radius of the blast.

CNN? CNN has been disreputable for decades in CHina now.

I still remember qutie well how CNN distort the truth of Riots in Lhasa several years.
if CCTV is bad, then CNN is the worse.

More pics:

Red circle is the kill-zone. If you're in it, you're dead. Full stop. Orange is the concussion zone. You'll suffer concussions, fractures, and burns, depending on how close you are to the killzone. Green is the bruise-zone. You'll have minor injuries, but the shockwave could still be strong enough to move objects in your home, and injure you. Damage is reported well beyond the green circle.

That car yard appears to be stocking Volkswagen and Audi cars for export.

As you can see, the killzone was much larger than what the state media is reporting.

Looks apocalyptic. No wonder the foreign media blackout.

Although I wish the casualties are as low as possible, it's kinda hard to believe that the fatalities are "only" 30, with "only" 300+ injured. CNN crew was arrested outside a hospital.

People are dazed and shocked. This incident will definitely force creation of new laws that keep explosive shipments far away from urban areas.

This is massive. Going by the videos, even the shockwave travelled atleast 1.5-2 KM.
i don't think we have seen an industrial accident of this scale in an urban area in recent years.....

1.I have just read one weibo, the writer says his girlfiend and her mother lived in the apartment closest the explosion site, but just slightly hurt. Now his girlfiend and her mother has went to another safe houses.
the red dot is the girl's apartment, it is the one cloest to the explosion. it is still far enough to shelter the girl and her mother.

2. According the Weibo, the explosing might not be disasterous as it looks, because departments/resident aevenues are far enough.

after all the explosion happened at mid-night in stocks, where few people except firemen were present.

The scale of destruction is huge, possibly from a weapon storage facility! Chinese are superb in concealing the truth.

I don't think they'll move military ordinance out of ports so close to populated areas. It must have been civilian explosives (eg: dynamite for use in the mining industry).

Even then, it's extremely stupid to store/ship such large amounts of explosives so close to a city as big as Tianjin.

It is in outskirt of Tianjin . But there are still many resident colonies nearby.

The Blasts shock wave is very powerful, there is a little chance of survival in the red circle. This is not one blast but multiple blasts.

Only good thing is that there are not many residential apartments around the container terminal.

Rest in Peace to the dead !!

Looks like the shock wave affects materials like steel, iron, plastic etc more than human body.

Media blackout is the best thing Chinese could have done and something that India constantly refuses to learn.

CCP will try to put a spin on the entire thing including the causes and casualties, which is probably not the best thing to do but makes sense.

@badguy2000 , what are the govt. sources saying?
