Marx in, Indian history out of school books in Left-ruled Tripura

    Agartala

After former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was dropped from Class 8 social science textbooks in BJP-ruled Rajasthan, Tripura’s Left Front government has removed Indian history from Class 9 textbooks altogether.

The only national icon that figures in the book is Mahatma Gandhi, not for his contribution to India’s freedom movement but for his views on cricket. Penned by Kalyan Choudhury, former head of history department in Kolkata’s Maharaja Manindra Chandra College, the book features the Russian and French revolutions. It also devotes pages to the birth of cricket in England, Nazism and the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the history of agriculture.

There is also a chapter on the Santhal rebellion and deprivation of forest-dependent tribals during the British rule.

"Students are taught Karl Marx and Hitler but nothing about Indian freedom fighters,” a teacher said, on condition of anonymity, adding the textbook could be revised in the next session.

Tripura Board of Secondary Education officials denied that chief minister Manik Sarkar’s communist government pressured them to prescribe the book, labelled “flawed” by non-Left parties.

“We followed NCERT guidelines for the new history syllabus. Class 9 students used to study Indian history earlier,” Mihir Deb, the board’s president, said.

BJP’s Tripura unit president Biplab Deb said: “The Left Front wants to paint everything red, even if it means destroying the education system. They are brainwashing students with Marx and communism. This is a recipe for disaster,” the BJP leader said.

Thanks for tagging me Chauhan ji.

Firstly, where was the outrage when the Rajasthan Board modified its syllabus?

Secondly, are Indian Freedom Fighters covered in the 8th grade or the 10th grade? In many boards, have grade is focused on certain time frames in history. If they have, then there is no need for anyone to hyperventilate. Clarity has been sought.

Thirdly, education is a state subject, as enshrined in the Constitution. Not everyone agrees with the Constitution, but it is what it is. Those that disagree have every right to protest, but in case they resort to violence, especially BJP supporters in Tripura, risk being put in prison.

Fourthly, it is good that they are teaching about Marx. They should also point out Marx's relevance in India's Freedom Struggle. Maybe they have, but was not reported in the article. If they haven't they should. There are plenty of pointers in this link: https://www.marxists.org/archive/bhagat-singh/

P.S.: I presume Rajasthan board won't be teaching the things mentioned in the fourth point to their students, but what do I know?

It is a good thing that they're teaching Marx. Marx's contributions were second to none, he was one of the first thinkers to demystify economics and explain everything in strict material terms. Were it not for his ceaseless efforts, most of the working class would still be in chains and workhouses, mass education would still be a myth, and so would healthcare and other wonderful things of the modern world.

Maybe, but he is not above Indian thinkers, revolutionary etc whom the govt wants to omit.

Indians should take precedence over foreigners like Marx.

Removing Nehru and removing entire Indian history are two different things.

I think both are wrong , history should not be edited by politician.I think its time we make deciding the syllabus outside the power of politicians. It is best for the country.

firstly yes there was outrage when Rajasthan Board modified its syllabus

But then current congress supporters are not in position to dictate their terms so it was limited to news-papers

I think that people such as Marx and Nehru but Nehru moreso should have their place in the textbooks but not portrayed in in good light as they are leftist revolutionaries and have contributed much to the downfall of our great vibrant aristocracy and replaced it with nothing of equal value. And don't give people such as Gandhi, Azad and Bhagat Singh a good vibe either their marxist scum as well its already poisoned the older generation.

don't glorify a jew man who leeched off his best friend and barely worked in his life and supposedly "felt for the poor" he's an idiot that thinks that sees history in linear terms as opposed to cyclical terms and cannot tell the difference between biological reality and "oppressive" social constructs which is destroying society as we speak due to destruction of gender roles and race mixing[IMG]

May or may not be. The point is history is overwhelmingly detailed, you can't teach students everything so you choose what to include and what to exclude, Marxism is an important subject to teach while I personally don't see Nehru as a must read person since there are more important persons than him.

I even wondered in my school days that how and why Nehru became my Chacha (uncle). So his exclusion is not more important than excluding Indian history. So my outrage !

Personal I like reading history,It helps us understand who we are and how ,plus it act as guide for future.Nehru is important his policy formed the bases for a lot of government and our current policy ,it deserves about 2-3 pages at least. As for socialism ,it is a ideology which changed the way we understand the relationship b/w government and society. It has its good points and its bad points and both should be taught.
