MANGALORE: At least 160 people are feared dead after an Air India Express aircraft from Dubai, carrying 173 passengers, overshot the runway while landing at the Mangalore airport on Saturday morning.

At least 6-8 people in critical condition have been rescued. Rescue operation was hampered by the thick smoke that engulfed the plane, airport authorities said.

The aircraft was on fire, he said. About 25 fire tenders and ambulances are on the spot, authorities said.

The incident happened near a valley 10 km from the airport, Karnataka home minister V S Acharya said.

The flight IX-892, operated by a Boeing 737-800, had 163 passengers, 4 infants and 6 crew members on board.

Aviation sources said the aircraft overshot the runway, hit the fence and went beyond the boundary wall of the airport.

All the contact with the aircraft was lost after 6.30 am as the left wing of the plane caught fire.

Aviation sources termed it an 'accident' instead of 'incident', they said. In aviation parlance an accident denotes causalities.

AI has opened helpline centre at Delhi Airport and the two numbers are 011-2565-6196 and 011-2560-3101. Mangalore Helpline number is 0824-2220422

DGCA Director-General S N A Zaidi said, "we have received only preliminary reports regarding the accident. But we are awaiting for the details including the number of passengers."

Civil aviation minister Praful Patel has rushed to the spot.

Have been watching it all morning. The airport is over a hill and called a table-top airport. We need to catch hold of the politicians who decided to locate the airport in such a dangerous location. It was a disaster waiting to happen!

Actually, we have to fire the DGCA and Aviation minister for declaring this an international airport, when it didn't even meet the requirements of a 9000' runway for international aircraft.

    tragic and sad, condolences!

take it easy before jumping to conclusions, they still have no clues what happened, right? they wont even know where the black box would be right now to get a sense of what all was happening in the cockpit. shimla has had a table-top airport for decades now and not one aircrash, and these are not the only table top airports across the world, there can be 10s of reasons, pilot error, technical glitch, etc.

No, it didn't meet the 9000' requirements. It fell short of all of 1000', and didn't even have landfill ahead of it (instead a deep ravine). Usually airports keep a sandy landfill, which can quickly retard an aircraft. The aircraft will suffer physical damage, though loss of life is minimized.

shouldnt that depend on the type of aircraft being used, b737-800 is a narrow bodied aircraft so shouldnt that stretch be enough?

You are right in saying that its not right to draw conclusions. But my point is that what was the need to build an airport in such an area when there were lot of other options. Areas like Shimla "may" have shortage of flat lands closer to the city, but there is no such problem in Mangalore.

And can we cut the crap speculation we are doing now with those reports from media? It is time to mourn and not speculate. Let the black Box be retrieved. And then we can judge the pilot and the DGCA.

We can be zipped, but how are you going to stop beloved media from making it into another drama from soap. I got really pissed at some of our media channels contesting to be top to report the most dumbest claims they could come up with.

they clearly don't give a hoot about the victim's families.
