Mumbai: More than 15 days after a man was photographed desecrating the Amar Jawan Smarak at Mumbai's CST station, he has finally been identified and detained.

Sources say the police began a man hunt for him as soon as his picture vandalising the memorial appeared in the media. Police are also looking for his accomplice who was also photographed destroying the monument.

Police believe they was part of the mob in the riots that erupted on August 11 at Azad Maidan, where thousands had gathered to protest against the deaths of Muslims in ethnic violence in Assam. Two people had died and more than 50 were injured, most of them policemen.

Three rioters are being hailed as the main accused in the case. Two who desecrated the memorial, and another who was spotted in CCTV footage brandishing one of the stolen police rifles.

Mumbai riot: Teen who destroyed war memorial nabbed in Bihar

Mumbai: A 19-year-old youth, one of the two who allegedly desecrated the Amar Jawan memorial during the August 11 violence in Mumbai, was today arrested after being picked up from his hideout in Bihar, police said.

"Abdul Quadir Mohammed Younus Ansari, an unemployed youth, was picked up from Sitamarhi in Bihar yesterday. He was preparing to flee to Nepal when he was apprehended,"
said joint Police Commissioner (crime) Himanshu Roy.

Subsequently, he was brought to Mumbai today and placed under arrest, following which he was produced before a
local court which remanded him in police custody till 4 September, Roy added.

Those 2 guys... their days are numbered for sure! The police or judiciary wont do much. But the people will do something for sure. And it could be very well be by someone from the Muslim community for all the publicity these 2 managed!

No doubt these are the "faces" of that riot. But how could they be the "main" accused!? The main accused have to be those who instigated this mob in the first place. As usual, the big fish evades the net!

What kind of punishment ( maximum) can be given to him? In Canada we had similar incident when two teenagers and 23 year old did the participate in a similar act which was more disgusting and insulting to our war heroes and Canadian public as well were let go without severe penalty. The teenagers were received no punishment at all because of their age and twenty three year old was handed volunteer service.

If, I have my way we should round up each and every one in the chain who helped him escape to Bihar and get the details on others as well who might have helped him get out of the country. Once we cross the bridge than the punishment phase should kick in and which should be cleaning the toilets of our Armed forces personal and law enforcement officials complexes. The minimum of eight hours a day and if possible broadcast live on internet as well. No one should be allowed to get away with less than one year of punishment.

I'd say he is lucky he was arrested. He might have been lynched otherwise.

From Mumbai >>>> Bihar >>> Nepal...Oh Raj Thackeray would have a field day with this.

On a side note, how did he even escape from Mumbai in the first place ? Is this the standard of surveillance put up by the Mumbai police for one of the Mumbai's "most wanted" ? Who was harboring him in Mumbai and Bihar ? What are their idealogical leanings - in the sense do they subscribe to extremist idealogies ?

+ He should be simply put in the Yerawada jail, in Qateel Siddidqui's cell ;)
