Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress to kickstart Lok Sabha campaign with mega rally in Kolkata today | NDTV.com

Edited by Nadim Asrar | Updated: January 30, 2014 10:05 IST

Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress will kick off its campaign for the national elections, due by May, by holding a mega rally in Kolkata today.

The ruling party in West Bengal has also decided to observe its Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs Day today, an event it usually holds on July 21 every year in memory of 13 party workers killed during a demonstration in 1993.

Ms Banerjee, buoyed by her party's impressive performance in the recent panchayat elections in the state, is expected to address the rally around 2 pm.

The rally, likely to be attended by almost three lakh people from across West Bengal, is being held at the Brigade Parade Ground with the iconic Victoria Memorial serving as a backdrop.

The sprawling ground in Kolkata is also slated to host BJP's PM hopeful Narendra Modi's rally on February 5 and the Left Front's on February 9.

For Kolkatans, however, the mega rally promises to be a traffic nightmare. The ruling Trinamool Congress has already apologised for holding the rally on a weekday.

These huge political rallies are putting the working class and students to great discomfort.

    The roads are vacant.

Kick-starting her party’s Lok Sabha campaign from a mammoth rally here, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her party would contest alone in the polls and renewed her call for a federal front.

The West Bengal Chief Minister also said that the Trinamool Congress was the only alternative for the country.

“Our fight is against BJP, our fight is against Congress, our fight is against CPI(M). Our fight is also against corruption,” she said at the rally which saw lakhs of people converging at the sprawling Brigade Parade Ground.

“We do not want a government which encourages riots. Bengal will show the way to India in the coming days,” she said. She called for defeating her arch rival CPI(M) and also the Congress hands down.

She said, “A federal front should be formed. We want a change (in government) in Delhi. We are giving a call from Bengal for change.”

Claiming that the Trinamool Congress would play a decisive role in the formation of a government after the Lok Sabha election, Ms. Banerjee said, “We have to win as many as seats from Bengal to ensure that Bengal plays a key role.”

Referring to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s clarion war cry ‘dilli chalo’, the West Bengal Chief Minister repeatedly gave ‘Delhi chalo’ calls.

Riding high on the back-to-back massive victories of her party in the recent panchayat and municipal elections, she said, “There is no room for complacency.

“There is no room to be overconfident and underestimate (opponents). We have to win all the Lok Sabha seats (Bengal has 42 seats). I do not want a chair. I want to serve the people,” she said.

“We want removal of corruption and to save the country. We want an united India. We want a government which works for harmony and integrity,” Ms. Banerjee, said amidst cheers.

Attacking the Centre for price rise and corruption, she said, “Our fight is against corruption. Our fight is against price rise. Our fight is for unity, integrity and communal harmony. We want to establish a government for the welfare of the people.”

Pointing to the vast sea of humanity, she said, “Today’s rally is not only historic, it proves that Bengal will once again lead the country. What Bengal thinks, India thinks tomorrow.”

“I am told by Mukul Roy (the party general secretary) that 20 to 25 lakh people have come here to attend the rally. We will hold another rally at the Brigade after winning the coming Lok Sabha elections,” she added.

The metropolis came to a standstill with traffic thrown out of gear as lakhs of people gathered at the Brigade Parade Ground.

Ms. Banerjee said, “TMC would contest various seats across the country and she would personally campaign.”

Mamata should first fulfil her duties as CM : Cong - The Times of India

KOLKATA: Mocking Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's 'Delhi Chalo' call, Congress on Friday said she should first learn to fulfill her duties as chief minister and only then dream of becoming Prime Minister.

"She can always dream of becoming the PM - anybody can dream about it. But before dreaming of becoming PM, she should learn to fullfil her duties as chief minister. The state government has failed to provide security to women and common man," Congress MP and Union minister Deepa Dasmunsi said.

"The dream of becoming PM should be kept aside and steps should be taken to provide security to the women. The incident of rapes and attrocities against women have become a daily affair in Bengal," said Dasmunsi on the sidelines of a hunger strike by Congress in demand of AIIMS hopsital in Raiganj, her constituency.

Congress leader Shakeel Ahmed Khan attacked Banerjee for her comment on 'ending monarchy' and said her knowledge about Indian history was weak as monarchy came to an end in 1947 with the end of Britsh rule.

"What monarchy is she taking about? In India it is democratic rule. But in this democratic rule if someone is trying to bring in monarchy and dictatorship, then it is Mamata Banerjee's government."

Khan also took a dig at Banerjee for not coming out clean on BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. "Mamata Banerjee is dreaming of becoming PM. She is yet to come out clean on Narendra Modi. Both Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh have praised Banerjee, everybody knows the meaning."

Somen Mitra, who has recently defected from TMC, said "Even if Trinamool wins all the 42 seats I can't understand how she will play a deciding factor as the Lok Sabha consists of more than 500 seats."

Kickstarting her party's campaign for the LS election at a rally here on Thursday, Banerjee, who had shared power earlier with NDA and UPA at the Centre, attacked both saying "we do not want dynastic rule, nor do we want a government of rioters at the Centre".

Renewing her call for a federal front of non-Congress and non-BJP political parties, Banerjee had yesterday lashed out at BJP saying her party does not want 'a government of rioters' and announced that TMC would go it alone in the coming Lok Sabha election.

Mamata Banerjee and Anna Hazare to campaign together for Lok Sabha elections - The Times of India

KOLKATA/PUNE: Mamata Banerjee's ambition to play a key role in the national politics is taking shape after plans of sharing the dias with Anna Hazare in a joint campaign for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

A meeting between Banerjee and Hazare, scheduled to take place in New Delhi on February 18, is likely to give shape to an all-India campaign tentatively dubbed "Fight for India".

Mamata has reportedly agreed to give an affidavit "to people" that she would "resign" from the post (of Prime Minister) if she failed to implement Hazare's 17-point charter.

"We need a simple Prime Minister like Mamata Banerjee. I will campaign for her and appeal to voters to elect her," Hazare said after an hour-long meeting with Trinamool Congress national general secretary Mukul Roy at Ralegan Siddhi on Thursday.

"Mamata stays in a 12X8 ft home. She still wears slippers and simple saris. She doesn't avail an (official) car and takes no salary. She offers a ray of hope and if people stand by her, then the country will change in no time," he said.

"I had earlier sent a 17-point agenda to all parties. Only Mamataji replied. She agreed to give an affidavit to people. I will go to Delhi on February 18. We will have a detailed discussion and the path ahead will be decided then."

But earlier Hazare's had said he would not support any political party.

"We don't want a Prime Minister who operates on a remote control, even if he has an unblemished character," Hazare added.

Roy said he has come to meet Hazare as a respected senior and elderly statesman and convey Banerjee's highest regard for him.

Hazare also praised Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar and Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, saying he was happy with the way these chief ministers were running their governments and maintaining a "simple lifestyle" despite being in power.

Sources said "Fight for India" campaign will be targeting the approximate 90-crore people with cellphones. It would be apolitical to allow Hazare and Banerjee to share same space and also to enable them to target young voters (65% of voters in India is below 35 years of age). The campaign is likely to kick-start soon.

Trinamool was the first political party to accept Anna's 17-point charter of demands. Roy on January 16 had written to Hazare that most of these have been incorporated and some even implemented by the party during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls and 2011 Assembly polls.

"I would like to assure you that we are wholeheartedly working to incorporate many more such ideas in our party's 2014 election manifesto as well. We accept your 17-point economic agenda and need your guidance," Roy had said.

Hazare had indicated that acceptance of his 17-point agenda isn't enough and that he wanted Banerjee should also sign an affidavit that if she can't implement them she should resign. Agencies quoted Hazare saying, "...For the people, we want an affidavit from her that she would resign from the post if the 17 issues are not implemented. Affidavit is very important. And if this affidavit happens then I will tell people to stand behind her in order to change the country."

Hazare also said that he recently sent the same agenda to Aam Adami Party leader and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and was waiting for his response. "Arvind's party did not exist when I had sent the letter. So I will give him some time to respond. If he accepts the agenda and gives an affidavit I will think about supporting him," he said.

Nancy Powell to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee | NDTV.com

Close on the heels of a meeting with BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell has sought one with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"Probably either on February 20 or 21, the meeting is proposed," a top state government official said.

"The state government has sent a request to the Union government for clearance," he said.

Powell's wish to meet Banerjee ahead of the Lok Sabha polls due in May has led to speculation.

She had met Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief, in September 2012 and discussed possible US investments among other matters.

In May the same year, the then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had met Banerjee.

Ending a nine-year boycott, the US Ambassador had yesterday met Modi at Gandhinagar and said her country looked forward to working closely with the government India chose after the Lok Sabha elections.

Trinamool to contest from Tripura - The Hindu

The Trinamool Congress would field candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats in Tripura and party chief Mamata Banerjee would kick start the party’s campaign in the North-east by addressing a party meeting here on February 25.

“We have decided to field candidates for all the two parliamentary seats in the state and have started discussion with Tripura Gramin Congress to lend support to our candidates,” Tripura TMC chairman Ratan Chakraborty told reporters.

Tripura Gramin Congress is a breakaway faction of the Congress.

The West Bengal Chief Minister and party All India General Secretary Mukul Roy would kick start the party’s campaign for the North-east from here on February 25, Mr. Chakraborty said.

“They would arrive here by a chartered flight from Kolkata and would fly to Guwahati on the same day after addressing a rally here on February 25. The rally would take a shape of historic gathering in the state,” Mr. Chakraborty claimed.

Anna hazare is that person to whom everyone gives respect and take advice . Mamata Banerjee is going for federal front and there are chances that Mamata will emerge stronger.
