Ten days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lands in Paris on his first official visit, there's going to be plenty on the table to announce. Moments ago, the Indian MoD cleared the decks for the revival of the all-but- stalled Indo-French SR-SAM (designated 'Maitri') programme. The MoD has instructed the DRDO to progress project discussions with MBDA to begin development for an SR-SAM system for the Indian Navy. As Livefist reported last month, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had received representations from both MBDA and the Indian Navy on moving ahead with the project. Here's Livefist's projection : 1. The programme will now move ahead principally as a ship-borne SR-SAM system. Spin off variants for the IAF and Indian Army could presumably come later. 2. MBDA says development will be complete in three years from agreement signature. Things could move quickly given that all workshare and other components of the partnership have already been decided. 3. MBDA has represented to the DRDO that the Maitri programme could be plugged in for the Akash Mk.2. The precise modalities of that will need to be worked out, though the DRDO is currently on a well-earned high on Akash Mk.1 -- deliveries to the Indian Army begin in a few days, with fresh orders from the IAF in the works.
LIVEFIST: Indo-French SR-SAM Project Is Back ON
Don't we use Barak-1 for short range air defence ?

MBDA is already in advanced development stage of a potentially world beating SR-SAM program, the UK led Sea Ceptor / CAAM. They also have an off-the-shelf solution with VL-MICA (which is the graphic used in the photos above). So where does this talk of "Joint-Development" lead? It is another PAK-FA case, the OEM has already done most of the heavy lifting in R&D, we will only pour in money and perhaps supply some small items to make our media happy. In the end the nation wastes its treasure and talent.

FYI, this program will replace Barak-1, Igla, Kashtan, Strela and Osa missiles which make up the Navy's current SHORADS capability. This will streamline the Navy to 2 SAM systems, the Barak-2/8 for MR/LR engagements and use on capital ships and the Maitri for Point Defense and use on smaller vessels. A good balanced mix of advanced capability.

SR-SAM missiles in final stage, waiting for govt's nod to start production: MBDA
European missile major MBDA on Thursday said that it is waiting for the green light from India's Defence Ministry (MoD) to finalise its negotiation with the DRDO on naval air defence missile.

"SR-SAM is at very final stage, we have addressed all the topics linked to design, work share, future production, content of technology transfer (ToT)... all this has been discussed with customer, DRDO and BDL," Loic Piedevache, country head, India, MBDA group, said on the sidelines of the MBDA organised workshop on missile technologies for Indian armed forces.

"Now we need final green light from MoD to finalise our discussion and negotiation with DRDO," he added.

DRDO is the lead organisation for the design and development of the Short Range Surface to Air Missiles (SR-SAM) for the Indian Navy, while Bharat Dynamics Ltd is the ministry's missile production enterprise.

On the partnership arrangement for the under-development missile, Loic said: "It is a partnership. DRDO is the designer of the complete system, BDL is the production agency and MBDA is a strategic partner bringing its expertise and ToT of crucial items of the SR-SAM."

On how quickly the missile can be delivered, he said: "First deliveries will start in three years after signing the contract and all the deliveries will be completed within five years."

With the MBDA having designed the missile for range longer than the required range of 15 kms, Loic, giving the rationale, said: "We realised that when SR-SAM will be manufactured in India, it will be an Indian missile and there is a very strong export potential.

"So, taking into consideration the operational requirements and export potential because there is no such missile today in the market. The design has been done to go for higher range of 40 plus km."

SR-SAM is very crucial for defence of ship at high sea against the anti-ship missiles and aircraft.

I'm very happy to see the news, finally our Ships get the most modern MICA based Maitri SAM for our ships .. Hope all our Future and Current P 15A,B ships also get the system in next MLU.

Hope we also develop a land based system to replace older Akash and expensive Israeli Spyder's

Thanks to @bengalraider to bring this to my eyes

First explain what is the difference between newest Barak -8 and this MBDA -LRSAM. Are they not duplicating each other.

Is our navy/Airforce/army taken over the glossy blue coloured brochures which the French are putting out to sell their wares.

Maitri similar like IAF Spyder, not the Barak

we buy Spyder directly from Israel, and Barak 8 is a JV

Same Maitri is a JV of DRDO and MBDA.. however Maitri meant only for Navy ships

Barak-8 is an Long Range SAM, whereas MBDA Maitri is an Short Range SAM.
Barak-8 is a complete Israeli design, whereas Maitri is a cross between Trishul and Mica.
Barak-8 could be used as an area defence weapon, whereas Maitri is a point defence weapon.

Barak 8 can shoot down targets as close as 500 meters and hence fills in as a QRSAM/SRSAM as well
Barak 8 is a JV between India and Israel
Barak 8 can be used for both Area as well as point defence system.

Is Barak not indo - Israel collaboration, where India developed the motor and Israel develop the electronics and guidance system.

These kinda VSHROAD, QR, SR, MR all these to ensure the kill probability only, To make the air space is 100% secured from threats.

another is about costs itself..!! The rate of MR SAM and QR SAM is different, even so the range and altitude of interception

QR SAM version of BARAK 8 missile, range 35km alt. 10km

The size (4.5 m x 227 mm) of the missile is same as Barak-8, it uses same seeker and warhead (23 kg) as of barak 8 (70km) but uses single impulse motor instead of the dual impulse motor and is lighter (255 kg instead of 280 kg).It also uses the same 8 cell launcher all other elements of Barak-8 system. and it also uses the ELM-2106 radar not the ELM-2084 radar.

@Kunal Biswas plz move it to the relevant thread if any.
thanks

Maitri SAM needs to be junked for the Barak-8 SR SAM
for the sake of commonality we might argue that QR SAM version of barak 8 is better

but will it be advisable to put all the eggs in one basket ie Israel

LRSAM (120km), MRSAM (70km) is / will be based on barak 8 , from the point of security and redundancy , is it a good decision to source the last ditch defense system (QR SAM) from the same family and from the same country.

it is my view we should go on with the Maitri SAM with 2 types of seekers active and IR based or even dual seekers. QR SAM version of barak 8 uses active seekers only.

developing the Maitri SAM will provide much needed impetus to ur own R & D as well as provide redundancy from the security perspective .

between nations there r no friends only self interests, do u know israel exports the barak to a country whose relations with India is not so good but that country is on a good standing with pakistan.

anyways lets wait and see

Country is azerbaijan, Israel supply a lot of systems to turkey too..
Israel is in this for money only, bad part on india that it didn't asked for a clause on co-developed systems..
Barak 8 should have all clauses as Brahmos has. i.e. can only be exported to countries friendly to both.

BARAK-8 in the Navy is called LR-SAM but IAF call it MR-SAM, it has a range of 90km

BARAK-8ER will have a range of 150-170km.
yeah i knew that but did not want to elaborate, lazy me:biggrin2:

anyways the range of BARAK-8ER is 150-170km ?

I am very confused by this nomenclature. This is what I understand:

Current scenario
Navy
SRSAM: Barak 1, Maitri
LRSAM: Barak 8
Very LRSAM: Barak 8ER?

Air Force
SRSAM: No need, maybe they'll get Maitri
MRSAM: Akash
LRSAM: S-400

Army:

SRSAM: SA-19, SA-13, SA-8, Spyder, Maitri
MRSAM: S-125, SA-6, Akash

There should be one standard in the future for air defence:
MANPAD
AA, AAA
QRSAM (<15km) [Maitri]
SRSAM (15km-40km) [Akash]
MRSAM (40km-70km) [Barak-8]
LRSAM (70km-180km) [Barak-8ER, S-400]
TAD(Theater Air Defence) SAM (>250km) [S-400]

Then each force should get:-

Army:-
MANPAD
AA, AAA
QRSAM (Maitri)
SRSAM (Akash)
MRSAM (Barak-8)

Air Force:-
MANPAD
SRSAM (Akash)
MRSAM (Barak-8)
LRSAM (S-400)
TADSAM (S-400)
BMD

Navy:-
MANPAD
QRSAM (Maitri) [Deploy on all ships]
MRSAM (Barak-8) [Deploy on frigates]
LRSAM (Barak-8ER) [Deploy on all destroyers and bigger ships]
TADSAM (Develop one as a spin-off from indigenous BMD project. Also make naval version of BMD) [Deploy on Project-18 Destroyers, or make cruisers and deploy on them]

Note: BMD should use phase II missiles (AD-1 and AD-2)
