    MUMBAI: In the wake of NCP president Sharad Pawar's ultimatum to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, the state cabinet on Wednesday approved a populist proposal with an eye on the ensuing assembly elections to provide 16% reservation for backward Marathas and 5 per cent for Muslims in education and government jobs. As a result, the total reservation will be 73 per cent. In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, reservation has crossed the mark of 83 per cent, while in Tamil Nadu, it is 69 per cent.

    Chavan said the cabinet has given a green signal to provide for 16 per cent reservation for Marathas and five per cent reservation for Muslims.

    "The reservation for Marathas and Muslims will be besides the existing 52 per cent reservation for reserved communities. With the reservation for Marathas and Muslims, total reservation in the state will be 73 per cent,'' Chavan said.

    When it was pointed out that the Cabinet approval was against the norms prescribed by the apex court, Chavan said, it's fact that the Supreme Court had observed that the reservation should not be more than 50 per cent, however, if someone knocks the doors of the court, his government is prepared to fight the litigation.

    "It's a welfare measure for the backward communities. Under such circumstances, we don't that any person will approach the court. If someone moves the apex court, we will fight it out and justify the reservation," Chavan said.

    Embattled Chavan said the decision to provide for reservation to Marathas and Muslims was not taken over night, but was arrived at after a decade long deliberations and in depth study. The issue of providing reservation for backward Muslims was first raised in 2004 when Vilasrao Deshmukh was the chief minister, while the issue of Maratha reservation was older.

    "We have independent reports on reservation for Marathas and Muslims. After careful study and on the basis of population, the cabinet decided to provide 16 per cent reservation for Marathas and five reservation for Muslims," Chavan said.

    After the humiliating defeat of the Congress-NCP in the Lok Sabha polls, when Pawar and Chavan were drafting a strategy for the assembly polls, it was felt that the Congress-NCP front will be able to woo the Marathas and Muslims if reservation is provided to these communities in education and government jobs. Then specific reservation policy was brought to the notice of Chavan, since it was his responsibility to move the proposal before the cabinet.

    A month ago, Ajit Pawar had a marathon meeting with Chavan on providing reservation, then it was agreed to approve the proposal as early as possible.

    However, as there was prolonged delay in the decision making process, a week ago, Pawar stepped in and asked the Congress high command to take a decision on Maratha and Muslim reservation on top priority.

    Oh... so now the General category would be thrown in Indian Ocean?

    "General = General Class"

    "Quota = Business Class"

    Are Marathas/Muslims really downtrodden?

    Only SC and ST can claim this status.

    So I guess the only caste not granted reservations of some sort of another now are Maharashtrian Brahmins? Why don't they rename the reservation system and call it what it really is, i.e anti-Brahmin apartheid system? The purpose of the reservation system was originally to reverse the historical discrimination faced by the lower castes. Hence, granting reservations to Marathas makes no sense. Marathas are Kshatriyas and of the same stock as Chattrapati Shivaji. I wonder what Shivaji would think of this move if he was around today.

    Unlike in many other states, Maharashtra has a tradition of collaboration between the Marathas and Brahmins during the period of the Maratha empire. This move will only serve to create divisions between the two communities, further fracturing Marathi society. Of course, it's great for the politicians, because just like the British, they've learned the trick of divide and rule. But it's a sad day for Maharashtra.

    Wow...I thought TN had the highest in terms of reservation, I had no idea AP was so high!

    Wonder how much longer it's going to take people to realize the game politicians are playing.

    How its good decision can u tell

    if its implented then out of every 10 seats in collage 7 would be reserved.

    Your future sbilings wont stand a chance to get in collage unless and off-course either u belong to reserved category or u have deep pocket

    I think it time that almost 100% reservation is provided to all other caste except upper caste people (that to bharmins only) so that the great injustice done to all caste finally gets justice and bharmin can pack their back and look for any other country

    At this rate the Brahmins will surely ask for reservations since they have become a minority!

    And they will claim to be minorities in minority in Maharastra because there are

    Deshastha Rugvedi: Are very ancient and widely distributed.
    Deshastha Yajurvedi Brahmins: They have migrated from the banks of Ganges to Godawari. Sant Dnyaneshwar, author of Dnyaneshwari, is a Yajurvedi. Deshastha communities belong to Maharstra, excluding Kokan.
    Daivadnya Brahmins: A Hindu Brahmin sub-caste of the west coast of India, predominantly residing in the states of Goa, coastal Karnataka, and coastal Maharashtra.
    Samvedi Brahmins: Samvediya Brahmins in Vidharbha are known as Lattyayan or Lad Brahmins. Emperor G.P. Satvahan had brought them to Maharashtra. There are Samvedi Brahmins around Sopara (near Vasai) also.
    Chittpawna Brahmins: Are also known as Kokanstha. They have migrated from Sopara to Chiplun (In Ratnaghari District), by sea. Great Peshwas of Pune, Lokmanya Tilak, and Swatantry veer Sawarkar are Chitpawans.
    Karhade Brahmins: Migrated from Karnataka to Karhad, and from there to Kokan, Sagar and Indor and all over. Golwalkar Guruji of RSS and renowned scientist Jayant Nararlikar, are Karhades.
    Saraswat Brahmins: Are not averse to eating fish. They are mainly in Goa and Kokan. Many well known cricketers, writers, and actors are Saraswats.
    Devaurkhe Brahmins: Have migrated to Maharashtra during Vijay Nagar Dynasty.
    Kanva Brahmins: were rulers of Maghda for about a century. Nitin Gadkari BJP national president is a Kanva.
    Charak Brahmins: are mainly around Nagpur.
