Maharashtra is a state beset with this decades old problem. I have said this earlier. The Western Ghats block all the rain bearing clouds. The hinterland gets no moisture, while it often floods and wrecks havoc in the coastal regions. Been there, done that. I was stuck in my office for two days in the middle of floods in 2006. Not a very pleasant experience.

The situation is not the one that can't be dealt with proper management of resources, but of course no government agency gives a damn about proper management.

It is high time we need to handle our water resources carefully. The situation is grim. Any money that goes into water resources goes of in corruption whether you take ganga water cleaning or yamuna water cleaning or any other water project. Future will be poor with rising population. We need to learn water conservation.

Modi's experience will help us in this field

Negligence by Congress and Shivsena are reason behind making the situation worse. Like Pmaitra said, western ghats block the water bearing clouds, central parts do not get any rain. People get drinking water once in 20-25 days. In summer, Hydroelectric power plants fail to generate power, industries get electricity cuts for 2-3 days a week. Situation is nothing new. Its been like this for more than last 3 decades.

No drought relief package can heal the problem. What will you do with money?? Drink it ? Design for proper water distribution from major rivers is on table for decades but the classic Indian problems of land acquisition, compensation, irrigation lobby and obvious politics. I grew up watching all this. Honestly speaking, they should stop declaring 'drought-hit' areas and rather declare it as region unfit for civil residential purpose. At least people will move out and maybe find better life elsewhere.
