The MP Govt is in news lately (atleast among the NDTV wallahs) for its move to introduce a "state" anthem.

Proponents for it say it is designed to create a sense of "belonging" among the MP people and the opponents, as usual, say it will divide people instead of national integration.

    Please discuss about it.

    ==================================================

Personally I think it is not bad as imposing "homogeneity" on a national level was never an agenda in India and the basic idea of the Union of India is federalism and maintaining a distinct state identity and celebrating the diversities with the ideas of being united through the Indianness. In TN also there is a defacto state anthem - the Tamizhthai Vazhthu (Glory to Mother Tamizh), though not many know it.

No. I think there's no need for a anthem.. We have a national anthem that eulogises the entire nation. What is the need for a state anthem..

I think there's nothing wrong in state identity propagation. In the US, each state even has its own flag.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states

What's more, businesses hang/hoist their state flags before the national flag.

    Done.

I hardly come across any controversial news about Rajasthan or Maharashtra on Undie tv. Even the little that I do come across is about the opposition.
What's the big deal about State anthem? It's not a problem as long as National anthem is mandatory.

Karanataka already has its anthem, jaya bharatha jananiya tanujate. The immortal lines were penned by Kuvempu. The opening lines starts like this.

Jaya bharata jananiya tanujaate jai he Karnataka maate
Jaya sundara nadi vanagala naade jaihe rasa rushigala beede.
Bhoodeviya mukutada nava maniye gandhada chandada honnina ganiye
    Raghava madhusudhanaravatarisida bharata jananiya tanujaathe

Hail O mother Karnataka, beloved daughter of mother India,
Hail to you O land of beautiful rivers and forests, hail thee the abode of Rishis,
thou are the new jewel on the crown of mother earth,a mine of gold and fragrant sandal,
You are the beloved daughter of mother India, where Raghava and Madhusudhana incarnated.

I would have hoped that the MP govt. spends more time on much more important issues like eradicating poverty and improving quality of life of people.

They are doing that too. SSC is considered one of the best CMs in India.

    Everything goes hand-in-hand.

hardly makes a difference seriously, they can look for whatever identity they want, till the time it doesnt cross the lines with the national interests and doesnt raise questions on the indian constitution.

what are the arguments being thrown in by ndtv.

Its an anti-secular move by BJP (duh) and will divide the people.

insecurities know no limits, and if the republic was so loosely woven then there wouldnt have been any india by now. we have withstood the lows and are way better off for india to fall out like that. anti secular and how?

dividing people, well till the time these people dont do a shiv sena on people from rest of the country it is all fine and even that can all be controlled. anyways, what do they have to say about article 370, is it not divisive in its own right or does that bind the people of j&k with the rest of the country?

How about all of us have our own personal anthems?

Anyone want to enter the competition? We are all unique individuals, we all look different and sound different, why not have our own anthems too! :D

Anything that increases brotherhood between people is welcome. Many of the separation talks are just hot air to earn some political mileage.

There shouldnt be any worry when people are enough educated to understand the difference.

Exactly. India survives and prospers because we don't impose/force 'homogeneity' on anyone and instead we celebrate our diversities and upon it we overlay an idea of India.

They and the Christian father they interviewed gotta tell me :D. Maybe is it because its a BJP ruled state ?

When have our people spoken on a uniform plane of thought without exhibiting hypocrisy ? Every situation even if they are utterly similar evokes different reaction depending on who is the agent provacateur and who is the beneficiary.

    Ejazr, Godless-Kafir, Lcatejas, Sayareakd,

guys what is the objection you chaps have in mind, please explain and help me understand the objection better.

i can fully understand when you guys say the government's priority should be development and to look after the more urgent needs of the people but all this will require is a legislation and thats it, which means this wont take too much time in the vidhan sabha, assuming the opposition will also be supporting the idea, neither will it in any way interfere with the development work any which way nor does it go against the constitution.

also MP is considered a better managed and performing state, than quite a few and this i take from ndtv which has projected shiv raj singh chauchan a progressive and pro development CM.

If J&K can have separate constitution and article 370 safeguarding its identity then why cant MP has bare minimum its own national anthem?Nobody has problem when their is opposition to try color being hoisted at Lal chow.but all hell break loose when Mp try to seek its own identity just by having a national anthem.

Their is urgent need for power sharing between center and states.Center is too much powerful that it runs states at its whims.Center must jut look after foreign policies and defence leave other responsibilities to respective state.
