The Sri Lankan Navy is on the verge of commissioning its largest warship, which has been built in India under a Rs 1,000-crore contract inked four years ago for two such vessels.

The manufacturer, state-owned Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), will deliver the first offshore patrol vessel to the Sri Lankan Navy at a ceremony at the yard on July 22.The 105-metre long warship, with a displacement of around 2,400 tonnes, is expected to be commissioned into the Sri Lankan Navy on August 2.

“It will be the largest warship to be operated by the Sri Lankan Navy. It is also the largest warship to be exported by an Indian shipyard. The step will deepen naval ties between the two countries,” Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital told HT from Goa.

The shipyard has beaten the deadline for delivering the warship because of which the Sri Lankan Navy will induct the vessel almost three months ahead of the scheduled delivery. Sri Lanka will get the second warship in February 2018, again three months ahead of schedule.

Such patrol vessels carry out several roles including fleet support operations, maritime surveillance, defence of offshore installations and escorting high value ships.Capable of reaching a top speed of 25 knots, the vessels have been designed to accommodate a helicopter on their flight decks.

The shipyard will also deliver a fast patrol vessel to Mauritius on August 9, the 14th such vessel to be delivered to that country during the last two years.

Plus side, more Indian influence will lead to reduction of chinese influence on sri lanka. On the other side, Sri Lanka will use this same vessel to capture Indian fishermen.
More burning issue is Lanka going to Chinese camp and Chinese vessels encircling India. In that case Lanka would use those ships again to capture Indian fishermen and possibly Chinese navy guys onboard in the name of training or anything. We SHOULD just keep Chinese out of our Ocean.

If Indian fishermen goes to Lankan water then it has to be solved diplomatically and should be considered as a separate issue.

Nothing works better than a good old start to the face threat. Warn the Sri Lankans of an all out invasion if they tilt too much towards the chinese. That should keep them in check.

When idiot Army is searching for a rifle from outside, Navy has become and exporter of the systems consistently developed with their support across various nations like Sl, Myanmar and others. This is purely a result of constant support of navy to the products development locally.

Lankans are playing to both sides to china and India, fisherman issue will never be resolved trust me as long they harbor xenophobic attitudes towards Tamilans. i visited this dumb nation after end of the war xenophobia towards Tamils runs high no amount of Indian "influence" can stop that. @Kshatriya87

india can never beat Chinese psy-ops and propaganda entire Chinese population are brainwashed to believe false history, so called indian influence is very weak or pathetic at best because of failure to understand tamil-sinhalese relations.History books mentions little about sri lanka in india. the Chinese greatest weapon is history and altering it when will GOI wake up to this.
spot on this same vessel will be used to capture or fire on Indian (tamil) fishermen. there no indian influence. will have to see GOI response to it. mostly Chinese will take over the island and install Ceylon princess there:pound:
shes talkin abt her lankan hometown. pls watch entire video fully. now talk abt Indian influence over Chinese.

Maybe you didn't read my post properly. I'm not talking about Indian influence on china, but on Sri Lanka.

I was taking about strong Chinese influence on sri lanka over weak or pathetic Indian influence. sri lanka is already lost to Chinese , get over it.
If it was lost, why aren't chinese ships docking at sri lankan ports anymore? Why was a chinese warship denied permission to dock at sri lankan port a couple of months back?

You need to understand the geopolitics here. If India decides to act, it will be the sri lankans who will lose big time while chinese sit back at their home in the north comfortably. Sri lankans cannot risk that kind to tension with Indians.

These Chinese influences in the IOR region will only sustain if their mainland economy doesn't crash or else these will be long forgotten outpost which can be destroyed in hours if India decides to act aggressive..SL is lost into chinese hands thanks to Rajapakse and he took the chinese help to end the LTTE insurgency ..And india struggled a lot to remove him from the top post and bring some india favoured govt in the island ..ethnic tension scars of the past still alive it will take a lot more time to expect some india favoured decisions in SL ..Well Good thing about selling Warships is being a island nation they will use it extensively and they will also need to depend on us for the MRO jobs ..Its not like you buy a ship and say fuck off i will sail across 7 seas ...
