Colombo (PTI) LTTE Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran, who led a ruthless movement for a Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka that decimated a score of Sinhalese and Tamil leaders and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was on Monday killed by the army bringing curtains on the 30-year-old war that has claimed over 70,000 lives.

Prabhakaran, 54, was shot dead by Sri Lankan special forces as he tried to stage a dramatic breakout from the army encirclement, a military spokesman said.

The news of Prabhakaran's death also came along with reports of bodies of his son Charles Anthony and three other top leaders -- Pottu Amman, Soosai and Nadesan being found.

Prabhakaran and his top aides were driving in an armour-plated van accompanied by a clutch of rebels in a bus and approaching the Special Forces. A two-hour exchange of fire followed and the forces fired a rocket at the van brining an end to the battle, army sources said.

Prabhakaran's body was pulled out from the van and identified, they said. Prime Minister Ratnasri Wickramanayake said the army says they have killed him.

"The next step would be the development in the north (Tamil areas)," he said.

Celebrations broke out in the capital here as news spread of the death of Prabhakaran, who led the longest armed struggle in South Asia for nothing less than a separate homeland for Tamils.

Prabhakaran, who had seen many a battle, could not survive the sustained assault from the Sri Lankan forces that began in November last year leading to displacement of the Tigers from their long-held de-facto capital of Kilinochchi and then from Mullaitivu.

Prabhakaran founded the LTTE in the late 1970s and carried out his first political murder against the mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappah, a fellow Tamil, by shooting him at point blank range while he was about to enter Hindu temple at Ponnaalai.

The LTTE, which was angry over IPKF role in the Tamil areas in the aftermath of the Rajiv Gandhi-Jayawardane accord, assassinated Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in 1991 during election campaign by a women suicide bomber.

The death of top LTTE leaders came a day after the Tamil Tigers conceded defeat saying the decades-old battle has reached its "bitter end" and they have decided to "silence" their guns.

Earlier in the morning, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara had said that Prabhakaran was still alive but completely encircled by advancing Sri Lankan forces in a tiny jungle area north of Vellamullivaikkal after most of the LTTE's top leaders were found killed.

The army said that its special forces had encircled Prabhakaran, Pottu Amman and Soosai who were boxed into a 100m x 100m area.

The killing of Prabhakaran came as officials confirmed that more than 220 frontline rebel cadres, including his elder son Charles Anthony, LTTE political head Balasingham Nadesan and LTTE peace Secretariat chief S Pulidevan had been killed in fierce battles in the last 12 hours.

The other top LTTE leaders slain include Black Tigers' chief Ramesh, Tigers' police wing chief Ilango and senior leaders Sundaram and Kapil Amman.

The body of 24-year-old Anthony, chief of LTTE's air wing, was found during mopping up operations in the last rebel-held territory in the no-fire zone on Monday morning, the defence ministry said.

Nadesan, a former constable of Sri Lankan police, was heading the political wing of the Tamil Tigers. S Pulidevan was the head of "LTTE peace secretariat" while S Ramesh was the chief of Black Tigers.

According to the defence sources, the body of Anthony was found after an unsuccessful attempt by the Tamil Tigers to evacuate their leader's son early Monday morning.

Anthony was known to be the head of Information and Technology department of the LTTE.

i salute to Prabhakarn
to his legacy and as a Indian.
but not his organisation [LTTE].
Why would you salute a terrorist who killed our prime minister and killed so many Tamil "rivals"? He was an idiot terrorist and deserved nothing but death.

Let's hope the Srilankans now give the Tamils their due rights and prevent them from needing to take to arms ever again.

Prabhakaran was a terrorist. He terrorised the tamil population as much as he terrorised the sinhalese. Though his goals were legitimate, the means to the ends was nothing short of atrocious. He had an absolute disregard for human life, killing innocent civillians for the sheer purpose of terrorising them into submission.

The tamil people were also basically terrorised into submission. All other pro-tamil groups were annihilated by the tigers. Towards the end of the conflict, SL tamils who managed to escape the conflict area into refugee camps told foreign media how the LTTE prevented refugges from leaving. Also, there are reports of citizens being used as human shields by LTTE. Contrast this with Indian freedom fighters who fought the british and didn't blow up civilians

The tamils living abroad may see Prabhakaran as a hero, but how many of them would want to live under his tyranny. Its easy to sit somewhere safe and blab nonsense, but if they were actually in the shoes of the tamils in SL, they would realise that they were just stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. They were either oppressed by the Sinhalese or by the LTTE.

And for those indians supporting the LTTE, remember that LTTE killed our beloved prime minister, rajiv gandhi, and also killed over a 1000 of our IPKF soldiers. And yet there are elements in India sympathetic to this heinous organisation. Its despicable.

I do feel deeply for the civillians who were affected by the war, but i have no remorse for the LTTE. Let all of them die and as for Prabhakaran's death, good riddance.

I was reading the comments on some sites and saw how many Indians are busy "respecting" a terrorist.. wtf?

What's wrong with this country? Haven't Indians suffered enough at the hand of such people that you all are still blindly making a martyr out of terrorist like Prabhakaran?

Personally I think he got off easily. A torturous jail term is what his and his terrorist buddies is what they needed since day-1. Pretty much what seperatists and all India haters living in our country deserve.

EDIT: Oh and read the pages dedicated to his "achievements" on p.o.s. papers like TOI. They are REALLY sad that he is dead.

The only sad thing about this whole LTTE/Prabhakaran episode is that these Sri Lankan Tamils were (and possibly still are) persecuted and treated like second class citizens in their own country, a la South Africa during apartheid.

Prabhakaran and many others took up arms against this tyranny, but were eventually consumed by the very cause they undertook. They became fanatics willing to go to any length to pursue their Tamil Eelam, and in doing so, deserted their friends in India by assassinating Rajiv Gandhi.

Like Gandhiji once said, the greatest crimes in history have been committed by people who sincerely believed that their goal was just and noble.

Yes Prabakaran is a terrorist, Nothing sad in his death.

But everyone should remember he have gave advanced view on terrorism, and everyother terrorist groups copied the tactics of LTTE, There is nothing that they have copied from others.

Killing Rajiv Gandhi is the greatest blunder committed by LTTE, Please do not support for the IPKF, A section of IPKF has done a greatest mistake that they should never had done, Because of that section alone the whole Indian Army has bad name.

The civil war in Sri lanka did not start with LTTE or Prabhakaran and will not end with the demise LTTE.............Unless genuine devolution of political power takes place in the NE SL and it recognize that region as a Tamil homeland, this will only be Pyrrhic victory and merely the lull before a new storm brews.

And if Sri lanka plays the China card, the storm will only brew faster :)

When karunanidi says Prabhakaran was not a terrorist,he means the late LTTE chief did not kill Indians indiscriminately(How many Indian civilians did LTTE kill) .he took on the IPKF in a fair fight(a fight in which we were betrayed by Preamadasa)

Why Prabhakaran killed Rajiv Gandhi is the biggest mystery of all, there was no overwhelming strategy or political logic to it.But that single act alone(along with the assassination of Amruthalingam)made us his biggest enemy. That's were his real downfall began.

Ultimately those who live by the sword die by it.........in the land of Lanka Prabhakaran was not the only Ravana

LTTE or the Tamil Tigers) is a militant organization based in northern Sri Lanka. Founded in May 1976, it has actively waged a violent secessionist campaign that seeks to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. This campaign had evolved into the Sri Lankan Civil War, one of the longest running armed conflicts in Asia. The Tamil Tigers are currently proscribed as a terrorist organization by 32 countries including India.

Velupillai Prabhakaran November 26, 1954 – May 18, 2009was the founder and guerrilla leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant organization that sought to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. Claiming ethnic Tamils had faced discrimination at the hands of the successive Sri Lankan governments. His stated and ultimate ideal is to get Tamil Eelam recognised as a nation as per the U.N. Charter that guarantees the right of a people to political independence
Now let me say i am happy to hear He is dead.No indian would be hear he is alive.Well I believe he died consuming cyanide and not shot down as the lankan army claims.it seems to be tactics by lankan goverment and army to show to world they did something big.The cause for this is this info i have read LTTE's practice such as wearing a cyanide vial for consumption if captured appealed to the Tamil people as dedication and sacrifice.Being top leader of LTTE he would have consumed it when army closed down to 100*100 m close to his area.

I am very much awestuck by the leadership of Prabakaran and the organisation of LTTE.It took around 30 years a fully backed army is trying to flush them out .

Their military wing includes the following specific subdivisions, which are directly controlled and directed by the central governing body:
Sea Tigers - an amphibious warfare unit focusing on utilization of naval firepower and logistics, mainly consisting of lightweight boats.
Air Tigers - an airborne group, consisting of several lightweight aircraft. It is known to be the world's first air force controlled by an organization proscribed as terrorists.
Black Tigers - a suicide commando unit.
An intelligence wing.
A political wing.

It has grown itself from Guirella warfare to a conventional Army.
The most interesting fact is they have got Mini Submersible vehicles capable of transporting 20 persons.

Those are the Good things noted

Now bad things are
-child soldiers
-pioneers in Suicide bombers
-Female Militants
-Family heirdom
-Chicken meat for leaders and chicken bones and Skin for followers
-Training of all known militant groups in and around world, including moaist, ulfa.al queda, hisbullaetc
-Assasination of world leaders including our PM Rajiv Gandhi
-Transporting of drugs and weapons
-Worked as hired assasins(I have doubt whether our PM was Killed by then on behalf of some external force as the external force was aware india would become much developed under his guidance)

hi Termintor you are cent % correct.
when it was formed as Freedom Fighters movement,
but now it has become a terrorist Org due to maintaince of such a huge army directly is impossible. so they were using all illegal options to maintain them.
that gave them a bad image,
if Mrs Indira Gandhi was Not Dead, the Lanka could have become India.
thier would not be Any threats from the south.

Sri Lanka promises to give Prabakaran's death certificate to India

The Hindu News Update Service

Colombo (PTI): Sri Lanka has promised to give the certificate regarding LTTE chief Velupillai Prabaakaran's death to close the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, India's National Security Adviser M K Narayanan said on Thursday.

He said India was going by public statements from the Sri Lankan government that Prabakaran, 54, had been killed in combat in the island's northeast earlier in the week and had no reason to doubt Colombo's announcement.

Mr. Narayanan told reporters here after talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the Sri Lankan government has made a public announcement on Prabakaran's death.

"We will go by that. We will of course wait for a death certificate from the government so that Rajiv assassination case can be sort of closed," said Narayanan, who arrived here on Wednesday along with Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon.

"Beyond that, it is not possible for us to do anything. They have promised to give us a formal death certificate with regard to Prabakaran," he added.

Asked if Sri Lanka had failed to abide by the April 27 assurance to India that it will not use heavy weapons in the battle against Tamil Tigers, Mr. Menon said: "We are not in a position to confirm or deny these allegations."

"We were not present on the ground. I assume a lot of this is, let's face it, because emotions are running high. So before we give a categorical answer, we would like to know for ourselves, see what we can find out, but we have to let emotions die down first."

LANKAN TAMILS’ GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

‘We are the Tigers,’ roars despairing Tamil diaspora

On his visit to Sri Lanka on Saturday, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon asked for wider humanitarian access and political reconciliation. But Colombo may not listen and the Tamil diaspora is in no mood to concede defeat

Saira Kurup | TNN

You buried me in my land. O’ Enemy! Where will you bury my land?’ The words of Sri Lankan Tamil poet Kasi Anandan could speak for the country’s nearly one-million strong Tamil diaspora. The LTTE may have given up arms, but the diaspora has not surrendered.
Be it London, Toronto or Washington, the diaspora’s rage is growing with every report on the unfolding humanitarian crisis, the large-scale detentions and disappearances. “There is bitterness about the killing and maiming of civilians. There is a belief among Tamils that they will continue to suffer limits to their freedom of movement, of assembly, in the country,” says Canada-based Lankan Tamil poet Thiru Sambandar (name changed on request).
The diaspora is scattered across North America, Europe, India and Australasia. Most Sri Lankan Tamils migrated in the mid-80s as a direct or indirect result of the civil war in their island home. The diaspora is largely seen to have been instrumental in funding the LTTE’s armed struggle against the Sri Lankan state and army.
Now, the Tigers are gone and the diaspora is in despair. Sambandar says, “There is hope in the sense that morning comes after the long, dark night. And in the morning, birds will sing because nature deems their song necessary. We can join their songs with words of love and forgiveness. We can try to turn the other cheek but we become angry before the scenes of jubilation, before the announcing of a national holiday to mark this ‘victory’.”
The high Tamil casualties in the war have fuelled expat anger. “They celebrated after killing so many people,” says Suren Surendiren, spokesperson of the British Tamils’ Forum. On Saturday, Samy Vellu, the Tamil chief of Malaysian Indian Congress, said Sri Lankan leaders should be tried for war crimes .
Many blame India for the crisis. Even Sinhala leader Vickramabahu Karunaratna, general secretary of the Nava Sama Samaja Party and president of Sri Lanka’s New Left Front agrees “India was conducting the war but he also suggests the slender possibility “of a united solution”.
The Tamil diaspora doesn’t share that hope. Anandi Suriyaprakasan is former senior producer of the BBC’s Tamil Service and has interviewed the late LTTE chief V Prabhakaran three times. She says, “The Lanka government will destroy the concept of a Tamil homeland. They will have planned Sinhala colonization of these areas, as President J Jayawardene did in Trincomalee (in the 1980s).” She believes that India can make or break the Tamil dream. “If India can force the Sri Lankan government to give Tamils their legitimate rights and devolution of power, then there will be peace.”
Who will lead the peace? No one knows where, how or when to find the Tamil movement’s new leadership. Many believe this rudderlessness is dangerous because it may radicalize younger Tamils abroad. One of the diaspora’s most famous faces, singer Maya Arulpragasam aka M.I.A, has already told her 32,000-strong fan club on the social networking website, Twitter, that “the war in Sri Lanka is not against the LTTE, but against the Tamil people.” M.I.A.’s words count. TIME magazine recently named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people, alongside Barack Obama and Penelope Cruz. Suriyaprakasam notes that the 47-day-old protest against the Lankan crisis in London’s Parliament Square is mainly made up of young Tamils who insist “We are the Tigers”.
Will the Tamil movement be radicalized once again? Yes and no, says a London-based researcher of Sinhala-Tamil parentage, who didn’t want to be named. “The mentality of armed struggle will not go away soon. That guerrilla type of setup would exist. Whether Tamils will take up arms again also depends on how the government solves the issue of detentions.”
But Ahilan Kadirgamar, New York spokesman of the Sri Lanka Democracy Forum believes the end of the war is the end of the armed struggle. “The only way forward is through a political process.” In little-expressed public criticism of the diaspora he says, “it played a very negative role in fanning the flames of war over the last two decades. There needs to be deep self-reflection and self-criticism before the diaspora can play a constructive role.”
Sambandar sums it up: “The reasons for the conflict have not gone away; they have only become exacerbated. There is no chance for reconciliation within the current framework symbolized by the prejudiced flag with its prominent lion roaring over a few minority stripes.”

Tamil Tigers acknowledge death of Prabhakaran

24 May 2009, 2120 hrs IST, AGENCIES

COLOMBO: The Tamil Tigers on Sunday officially acknowledged that their leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was killed a week ago by Sri Lankan government troops, according to a statement from the rebels.

"We announce today with inexpressible sadness and heavy hearts that our incomparable leader, the supreme commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), attained martyrdom fighting the Sri Lankan government military operation," said the rebels' chief of international relations, Selvarasa Pathmanathan.

The LTTE leader said Prabhakaran had died on May 17 but did not give details of the circumstances, it reported.

The statement is the first time the LTTE have admitted the death of Prabhakaran.

Pathmanathan said the Tigers would now use "non-violent" methods to fight for the rights of Tamils.
