Lost continent discovered in Indian Ocean - UPI.com

Evidence for the lost continent comes from Mauritius, a volcanic island east of Madagascar. The oldest basalts on the island date to about 8.9 million years ago, says Bjørn Jamtveit, a geologist at the University of Oslo.

Jamtveit and his colleagues carried out a grain-by-grain analysis of beach sand collected from two remote sites on the Mauritian coast. Their study revealed about 20 zircons that were far older than the rest of the sand.

The tiny crystals of zirconium silicate are exceedingly resistant to erosion or chemical change. The zircons found in the study had crystallized at least 660 million years ago, says Jamtveit. One of these zircons was at least 1.97 billion years old. The team chose to collect sand, rather than pulverize local rocks, to ensure that zircons inadvertently trapped in rock-crushing equipment from previous studies did not contaminate their fresh samples. The remote locations of the collection sites make it unlikely the zircons were carried there by humans.

The nearest known outcrop of continental crust that could have produced the Mauritian zircons is on Madagascar. It is suspected that the zircons were pulled up to the surface through volcanic activity on the island. "There's no obvious local source for these zircons," says Conall Mac Niocaill, a geologist at the University of Oxford, UK, who was not involved in the research.

Analyses of Earth's gravitational field reveal broad areas where sea-floor crust is three to five times thicker than normal. They may be the remains of a landmass that the team has dubbed Mauritia, which they suggest split from Madagascar when tectonic rifting pushed the Indian subcontinent to the northeast millions of years ago. The researchers' study was published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

In an India -Pak debate in UNO, an Indian narrated a story as to how Rishi Kashyap went bathing in Dal Lake and how his clothes were stolen by Pakies. The Pak representative denied it saying that there was no Pakistan at that time. The Indian concluded saying this clearly shows that Pakistan has no claim on Kashmir as it was always part of India.

Fragments of an ancient microcontinent lie beneath holiday destinations Mauritius and Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, experts say.

The pair of isles are thought to sit on top of the hidden continent, dubbed Mauritia by scientists. The boffins believe the splinter of buried land became a separate landmass 60 million years ago when Madagascar and Indian drifted apart after the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia.

All the land on Earth was once gathered in this supercontinent until giant bubbles of hot rock known as mantle plumes softened the tectonic plates from below. Eventually, the plates broke up at the hotspots, which is how Eastern Gondwana broke apart 170 million years ago. That mass separated into Madagascar, India, Australia and Antarctica, which migrated to their positions in the modern world.

When mantle plumes occur at the edge of a landmass, small fragments can break off to form island groups such as the Seychelles.

A group of geoboffins now think that further fragments of Mauritia exist below the waves: a sunken continent much like a certain mythological landmass that springs to mind.

The scientists examined lava sand grains from Mauritius' beaches and found semi-precious zircon aged between 660 million and 1,970 million years, which would suggest that it was carried by lava as it pushed through the continental crust.

The experts also modelled the plate tectonics to calculate exactly where and how the Mauritia pieces ended up in the Indian Ocean. Those fragments were previously interpreted as just the trail of the Reunion island hotspot because they were covered in volcanic rock.

"On the one hand, it shows the position of the plates relative to the two hotspots at the time of the rupture, which points towards a causal relation," Bernhard Steinberger of the GFZ German Research Cetnre for Geosciences said.

"On the other hand, we were able to show that the continent fragments continued to wander almost exactly over the Reunion plume, which explains how they were covered by volcanic rock."

The boffins did not say whether the lost continent was that of Atlantis, Mu or Lemuria.

The team, also from Oslo University, the University of Liverpool and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa, published their study, A Precambrian microcontinent in the Indian Ocean in Nature Geoscience. ®

Generally this word "Kandam" in south Indian languages is used for sanskrit word "khandam" meaning part or Chapter. Can you please elaborate which Grantha this Khandam refers to.

Since Kumari Kandam is an extension of Indian subcontinental shelf, India has an irrefutable claim to most of it per international laws. There could be some small island nation claims but that's about it. No Pakistan and NO CHINA.

As per rig veda, earth after being lifted out of the oceans was divided into seven parts which rested on 15 different plates. Indians knew about continents and tactonic plates much before world came to know about them. Even today world knows about these 15 plates called faults in geography.
