The new official car of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan is a white Jaguar XE Portfolio costing Rs 48.25 lakh.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat cited security reasons to purchase the luxury sedan, which was delivered at the Speaker’s official residence in Delhi on Monday — so far, Mahajan has been using a Toyota Camry as her official vehicle.

“Sanction of Competent Authority to incur an advance of Rs 48,25,661 for purchase of new car for the use of Honble Speaker, Lok Sabha from AMP Motors Pvt Ltd. Necessary settlement will be made in due course after receiving the original invoice/bill for the purchase of new car,” states a note from the Secretariat. The amount was sanctioned on May 23, said sources.

When contacted, D K Bhalla, Secretary, Lok Sabha Secretariat, told The Indian Express: “There were two options, BMW and Jaguar, suggested on the basis of their security manoeuvrability. We have opted for the cheapest option.”

According to protocol norms, the Speaker is at par with the Chief Justice of India and sixth after President, Vice President, Prime Minister, governors, and both former presidents and Deputy Prime Minister.

    Commentary:

If security is the issue, there are plenty of alternatives that offer better security and reasonable comfort, and are made in India. There is no need to go beyond the three heads of the three branches - the Executive (President), Legislative (PM), and Judiciary (Chief Justice), when getting luxury cars, assuming for each, one will need 7 identical cars.

And interesting comment on the article that gives specifics of Z-security, which may or may not be true.

Utter waste of money. They'll be buying not one but seven cars (to meet with Z-category requirements). Why else do you think state-level Z-category protectorates use 15-lakh Rupee-worth Scorpios? Because they have to buy 5 of those, working out to 1 crore for the vehicles, and about 15 lacs per annum on fuel costs.

Instead of Jaguars, Government of India could ask Mahindra to bring the Ssangyong Chairman W to India (a brand it owns), which costs about 26 lacs a piece, and make it the Z-cat vehicle. Chairman W SuperLimo could be made the SSG-recepient vehicle. TATA or Mahindra branded vehicles for everyone else.

Should have gone for Scorpio. What's wrong with Scorpio? Is there any document available for Z-security required standards?

If the present Government was only splurging money and other functions of the Government were at a standstill, this step would have been objectionable. The post of the speaker of the LS is an important post and deserves the trappings .

Well now when Jaguar is Indian i see no problem in using them. It serves duel purpose of taking pride in Indian and projecting a powerful image (demonstration of wealth is considered show of strength). That besides the security requirements of important officials. And person holding place of speaker of lok sabha is no less important.

Even PM carcade uses Land Rover.

Its about time we get over fake show of austerity. Ambassador on road and Jack Denial in office. Give us a break.

Too bad to see anti Modi camp going desperate.
