JAMMU: Heavy firing exchanges continued on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Monday after Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing at Indian positions, a defence official said.

"Pakistani Army initiated indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics and mortars at 6.05 p.m. on Indian Armyposts along LoC in Sunderbani sector in Rajouri," defence ministry spokesman, Lt. Colonel Manish Mehta told IANS.

"The Indian Armyposts are retaliating strongly and effectively. The firing is presently on," he added.

Kashmir encounter: top LeT militant, 3 soldiers killed in Bandipora

SRINAGAR : A top Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant and three soldiers were killed, while six jawans and a civilian were injured in a fierce encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, this morning.
However, defence ministry spokesman was not available for details of the encounter. On a tip-off, the Army, Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint search operation at Parray Mohalla Hajan in Bandipora district at 0300 hrs.
However, when the security forces were sealing the area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons and hurled hand grenades.
The fire was returned ensuing an encounter, they said. They said in the initial militant firing, nine soldiers were injured. The injured were airlifted to Army base hospital where three of them are reported to have succumbed. One of the soldiers, who attained martyrdom, has been identified as Ravi Kumar. The injured security personnel, included a senior officer of CRPF Chetan Thapa. Militants again opened indiscriminate firing when security forces tried to enter the area with the first light. In the return fire, a militant was killed. The slain militant was identified as Abu Haris, a top commander of LeT. The encounter took place after four militants, a civilian and two soldiers were killed and three jawans injured in south Kashmir district of Kulgam on February 12. One civilian was also killed and over a dozen others injured when security forces opened fire and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators in Kulgam and Anantnag after the encounter. The Army had paid tributes to Lance Naik Bhandoriya Gopal Sinh Munimsinh and Sepoy Raghubeer Singhat Badami Bagh Cantonment yesterday before their mortal remains were sent to their native places for last rites. Regardless, how brave this is and how well we are figh, We are fighting the wrong enemy ..

Our enemy is Pakistan Army, Militant in majority should be taken on by paramilitary forces with some assistance from Army, We are losing slowly but steadily our best to cannon folders ..

On other-side of the border, Pakistani Ranges are being supported by Pakistani Army to clear path for terrorists, The full blunt of task on our Army in majority from patrolling to sniping and providing support fire, Their is little role paramilitaries do, Hence most casualties are of Army ..

We need to change our tactics to make sure this war of attrition works on other way, Its presently harming us since the beginning, Only for brief periods under right supervision things changes, This is not enough.
SPOT ON ANALYSIS , I was watching a Video by Major Gaurav Arya and he suggested to hire Jihadi in Pakistan to target Paki Army Pigs ,,,, but it feel that these Jihadi cannot be controlled , they will target both civilians and Paki Army even Indian Establishment will not want it and thats the reason why this is still not been perused . What are other Options from your prospective .

Major??

Looks like it was a long due target for them. He was on the list for some punches he might have given to porkis in the past.

This is seriously Not done. They can hit a major level officer like a warm knife on butter.

India should activate the LOC again! Bring the SF and arty

Army losing sniper edge over Pakistan on LoC

An Indian Army sniper

NEW DELHI: Nearly a fortnight after the surgical strikes in September 2016, Pakistani snipers took out sepoy Sudesh Kumar of 6 Rajput regiment who was on patrol along the LoC in Rajouri. A week later, they struck again, killing BSF jawan Gurnam Singh with a shot to the head in Hiranagar sector, Jammu. Two bullets from a Pak sniper caught rifleman Sandeep Singh Rawat in the neck, killing him instantly as he stood guard along the fence in the Kupwara sector.

In the last four months, over a dozen Indian soldiers have died at the hands of Pakistani snipers. A shortage of the lethal lone wolves, outdated technology and absence of specialised training programmes are fraying India’s edge in covert border warfare. Lack of official acknowledgment in the form of awards and citations is a deterrent to getting fresh recruits.

Indian snipers use only technologically obsolete Russian-made Dragunov rifles of 1960s vintage along the LoC. Acknowledging its slipping edge, an internal report of the Army HQ stated, “Snipers are force multipliers to any infantry battalion. The high standard of sniper training and their imaginative employment leads to decisive and out-of-proportion results.”

The Army started its hunt to replace the Dragunovs around 2012, but the infantry is yet to get new, up to date weapons. Indian Army has two snipers per battalion deployed at the Line of Control.

Little training and outdated equipment have led to India’s slipping sniper edge over Pakistan. Pakistani shooters use modern sniper scopes on their Austrian Steyr SSG .22 rifles. Crawling through thick vegetation, they take up position to monitor Indian troop movement and choose targets. Pakistan snipers are posted permanently at border outposts, while before the surgical strikes they were requisitioned on operational requirement.

“To achieve effective results out of the precision fire of a sniper rifle, it is important that the forced incidental errors due to environmental factors be reduced to minimum,” the Army’s internal report said. It identified hi-tech sniper scopes for small teams to be regularly deployed in counter-terror ops in the plains and high altitude areas up to 20,000ft, such as Siachen, where light and wind factors play an important role in shooting accuracy.

“These sniper detachments operate in conditions where judging distance and cross wind error component adversely affects the external ballistics before the bullet strikes the target. The new sniper scope with inbuilt distance and cross wind component correction will help the sniper to engage with precision,” the report stated while stressing on the need for institutionalised training for Indian snipers.

The Army is compensating the gap by using conventional styles of target engagement and distance assessment. “Third generation telescope sights are accurate to an extent in measuring distance but it requires extensive training at long range. Laser range finders and hand-held thermal imagers are being used to measure accurate distance.

However, it imposes the penalty of additional battle load on the sniper detachments,” the Army report added by saying that optical refracting telescope with variable magnification sites are being used by many armies. However, these sights don’t cater for high-speed cross winds and rarefied air in high altitude areas.

Even the BSF, in view of the rising incidents of sniper fire from Pakistan, has taken preventive measures such as placing nets in border outposts and Observation Posts. A 10-metre high embankment will be built along the LoC too.
