TAIPEI— In an unusual departure for mainland Chinese-language media, the Beijing-based Sina Military Network (SMN) criticized the capabilities of the carrier-borne J-15 Flying Shark as nothing more than a "flopping fish."
On Sept. 22, the state-controlled China Daily Times reported the new aircraft carrier Liaoning had just finished a three-month voyage and conducted over 100 sorties of "various aircraft," of which the J-15 "took off and landed on the carrier with maximum load and various weapons." This report was also carried on the official Liberation Army Daily.
Contradicting any report by official military or government media is unusual in China given state control of the media.
What sounded more like a rant than analysis, SMN, on Sept. 23, reported the new J-15 was incapable of flying from the Liaoning with heavy weapons, "effectively crippling its attack range and firepower."
The fighter can take off and land on the carrier with two YJ-83K anti-ship missiles, two PL-8 air-to-air missiles, and four 500-kilogram bombs. But a weapons "load exceeding 12 tons will not get it off the carrier's ski jump ramp." This might prohibit it from carrying heavier munitions such as PL-12 medium-range air-to-air missiles.
To further complicate things, the J-15 can carry only two tons of weapons while fully fueled. "This would equip it with no more than two YJ-83K and two PL-8 missiles," thus the "range of the YJ-83K prepared for the fighter will be shorter than comparable YJ-83K missiles launched from larger PLAN [People's Liberation Army Navy] vessels. The J-15 will be boxed into less than 120 [kilometers] of attack range."
Losing the ability to carry the PL-12 medium-range air-to-air missiles will make the J-15 an "unlikely match" against other foreign carrier-based fighters.
"Even the Vietnam People's Air Force can outmatch the PL-8 short-range missile. Without space for an electronic countermeasure pod, a huge number of J-15s must be mobilized for even simple missions, a waste for the PLA Navy in using the precious space aboard its sole aircraft carrier in service."
Built by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-15 is a copy of the Russian-made Su-33. China acquired an Su-33 prototype from the Ukraine in 2001. Avionics are most likely the same as the J-11B (Su-27). In 2006, Russia accused China of reverse engineering the Su-27 and canceled a production license to build 200 Su-27s after only 95 aircraft had been built.
Vasily Kashin, a China military specialist at the Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, suggests the J-15 might be a better aircraft than the Su-33. "I think that there might be some improvements because electronic equipment now weighs less than in the 1990s," he said. It could also be lighter due to new composites that China is using on the J-11B that were not available on the original Su-33.
Despite improvements, Kashin wonders why the Chinese bothered with the Su-33 given the fact that Russia gave up on it. Weight problems and other issues forced the Russians to develop the MiG-29K, which has better power-to-weight ratio and can carry more weapons. "Of course, when the Chinese get their future carriers equipped with catapults, that limitation will not apply and they will be able to fully realize Su-33/J-15 potential — huge range and good payload," Kashin said.
The Liaoning is the problem. The carrier is small — 53,000 tons — and uses a ski jump. From Russia's experience, "taking off from the carrier with takeoff weight exceeding some 26 tons is very difficult," Kashin said.
Roger Cliff, a China defense specialist for the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington, said this is "one of the reasons why sky-jump carriers can't be considered to be equivalent to full-size carriers with catapults."
A number of unanswered questions are raised by the SMN report, Kashin said, including the amount of fuel on board, carrier speed, wind speed and direction.
Cliff also raises issues with SMN's conclusions. "It doesn't make sense to me that the J-15 can take off with YJ-83s but not PL-12s, since the YJ-83 weighs about 1,800 pounds and the PL-12 weighs about 400 pounds."
A possible answer is that it was unable to take off with both. "The article says that it can only carry 'two tons' of missiles and munitions when fully fueled, which is 4,400 pounds, and two YJ-83s plus two PL-8s would weigh over 4,000 pounds, leaving no margin for any PL-12s. But I don't see why it couldn't take off with PL-12s if it wasn't carrying YJ-83s." Cliff concludes that the J-15 should be capable of carrying PL-12s when it is flying purely air-to-air missions and that "it probably just can't carry PL-12s when it is flying a strike mission."

Continued...
Kashin said the J-15, unlike the Su-33, should have a "potent" internal countermeasures suite, thus allowing for more space for weapons. The SMN report suggests it has an external electronic countermeasures (ECM) pod.
Weight issues should also not be too much of a problem for the J-15, he said, since the Su-33 did fly from the same type of carrier carrying "6-8 air-to-air missiles and Sorbtsia ECM pods carrying something like 6 to 6.5 tons of fuel."
China's next carriers will reportedly use electromagnetic catapults, Kashin said, but "limitations are significant when it comes to air-to-surface weapons, which limit the J-15's use as a multirole fighter.

China sends carrier to South China Sea for training amid maritime disputes

China sent its sole aircraft carrier on a training mission into the South China Sea on Tuesday amid maritime disputes with some neighbours and tension over its plan to set up an airspace defence zone in waters disputed with Japan.though considered decades behind U.S. technology, the Liaoning represents the Chinese navy's blue-water ambitions and has been the focus of a campaign to stir patriotism.

The Liaoning left port from the northern city of Qingdao accompanied by two destroyers and two frigates, the Chinese navy said on an official news website (中国海军网).

While there, it will carry out "scientific research, tests and military drills", the report said.
This is the first time since the Liaoning entered service that it has carried out long-term drills on the high seas," it added.

It did not specify exactly what training would be done, only noting that previous exercises involving aircraft landing and taking off had gone well and laid a firm foundation for future tests.

Previously reported training exercises have mostly been in the Yellow Sea.

China's Defence Ministry said on Monday that it had lodged formal protests with the U.S. and Japanese embassies after both countries criticised a Chinese plan to impose new rules on airspace over disputed waters in the East China Sea.

China also claims almost the entire oil- and gas-rich South China Sea, overlapping claims from Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam.

That dispute is one of the region's biggest flashpoints amid China's military build-up and the U.S. strategic "pivot" back to Asia signalled by the Obama administration in 2011.

China's navy said the mission was routine, adding that the Liaoning was still in a testing phase.

"This test visit to the South China Sea is part of normal arrangements for testing and training for the Liaoning," it added.

After another 37 days' sea trail and training mission and the first docking at the PLAN's second Aircraft carrier base in South China, Aircraft carrier Liaoning returned her home base in North China today--on the first day of year 2014....

in this deployment near around Hainan Island, as we know, the ship continued her sea trial under a deep sea environment to test the underwater detecting system and underwater acoustic warfare system in the co-operation with the SSN and SSK units...CV16-Liaoning also continued the deck operation training with the helicopter units(the fixed wing units seemed not come down south with carrier)...but the most important training and test is the early forming of a CBG ...

2*051C DDG ,
1*052C DDG,
3*054A FFG,
1*071 LPD(it's very possiable to simulate the AOE----Fast Combat Support Ship)
2*SSN/SSK

China's aircraft carrier leaves for tests, training
English.news.cn 2014-03-02

QINGDAO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, Sunday left its homeport of Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province on tests and training missions. The journey is the first of its kind for Liaoning in 2014 and is part of its yearly tests and training schedule, according to sources with he People's Liberation Army Navy. The aircraft carrier and its crew have conducted a series of tests and trainings, including landing and takeoff by various aircraft on its deck. The Liaoning is China's only aircraft carrier in operation. It was refitted based on an unfinished carrier of the former Soviet Union. The refitted carrier was delivered to the navy on Sept. 25, 2012.

the first generation of PLAN's carrier-based fighter pilots were selected and trained among the experienced ones from the PLAN Aviation Shore-based fighter regiments and PLAAF fighter units...the new generation carrier-based fighter pilots would be selected among the young high school students to recieve the Specific Training...the young men are very enthusiastic about it...
----------------------
last Dec, Jane's Online had a report about PLAN's new carrier-based fighter Pilot Training base with a satellite Image which indicated that this facility had two Ski-jump Ramps and two Arrested Landing Zones, 24 hangars ,three big maintance workshop...

Previously ,the President paid a visit on a rainy day of Aug 2013 ...some shots of the TV news about the demonstrated J15 taking off and Landing practise happened at that time.

the training of carrier-based fighter pilots would be very costly. they would fly at least four types of trainers before flying a J15 fighter.

1. CJ-6 Basic trainer

-------------------------------

2. JL-8 Intermediate Trainer...PLAN Aviation's JL8 (which has the better painting scheme than PLAAF)

----------------------------------------------
3. JL-9 AJT

and Improve JL9G with Landing hook(JL9G won't land on the Carrier and is used only for land based training)

-----------------------------------
4. J15S two Seat trainer for real landing on the carrier--the test flight of this varient is about to end ...

=====================================
in the near future, a Carrier based varient of JL10 AJT/LIFT(Twin engine trainer would be safer and better to simulate the twin engined fighter than JL-9 ) would replace some job of J15S for routine Taking-off and Landing training on the aircraft carrier, the more expensive and operation-costly J15S would be concentrated on more advanced Combat training...

Hongdu aircraft company started this AJT project without PLAAF's order and request a decade ago...all the fund came from the company's profits (K-8/JL-8 trainer and missile sales)...it was a brave movement... initially it was an Export project only with the Project code--L15...after years' hardworking ,L15 finally got the Affirmation and order from the PLAAF...and then this project got a PLAAF project code --JL10...

the JL10 prototype(AJT status) on the maiden flight ceremony

six Prototypes of L15 were manufactured for tests within the past decade and the first PLAAF customized prototype made the maiden flight only in 2013. the intense complementary test fights of JL10 project are going on now at a fast pace...(L15 has finished all the test and got the certification already, and this complementary test is on the PLAAF's request and standard)...

PLAAF would be the third customer of L15/JL10 project...PLAN Aviation would follow the PLAAF's steps and request a Carrier based varient. and it would be a varient fitting a engine with after burner(close to the L15 LIFT status /PT06)
